| Show your care for Lalbagh and Nanda Road - May 9, 8am - 9am |
[May. 7th, 2009|02:12 pm] |
Hi All, The protests opposing the current plans of the Bangalore Metro in the southern reach have been well publicized in the mainstream media. As a result, they have elicited statements from politicians across party lines supporting the suggestion that the design and alignment of the metro be re-examined before further work is taken up. Interestingly, yesterday, the Chief Minister has made an adamant statement saying there cannot be any change to the current plan of the Metro. Why then, did his Transport Minister state otherwise in a pre-election statement? If we do not hold our leaders accountable to pre-election promises, no one will. As a result of the CM's blessing, the metro authorities are proceeding with impunity. Yesterday they felled trees in Lalbagh under police protection. It is interesting that the police are busy protecting an action that on various counts is blatantly illegal, and in contempt of the High Court's direction. For example, at the present moment there is no documentary evidence that the portion of Lalbagh that has been "given away" is actually owned by the BMRCL. Separately, the High Court has also issued a stay on all activity within Reach 4 of the Metro (which includes the Lalbagh area), based on a pending case filed by property losers in the area. While legal means, including a contempt of court filing, are underway to stop this violation, it is imperative that citizens come out and voice their opinion on the short-sighted planning of the Bangalore Metro. Why should portions of the 250-year old Botanical Garden, as well as what is considered by many as urban India's finest tree-lined avenue (Nanda Road) make way for an concrete, overground monstrosity, gigantic overground stations, parking lots, shopping malls, and bus stations? Are there no alternatives? It turns out there are. The metro can go underground. The metro could go along K.R. Road. The metro could go along Jayanagar 11th main. Have these alternatives been explored in all sincerity? Nothing in the Metro Detailed Project Report suggests so. Hence, this is an appeal to all citizens to come and participate in a peaceful protest on Saturday May 9, at 8 am. We will assemble at 32nd Cross & Nanda Road (4th Main), Jayanagar. Please visit http://www.hasiruusiru.org for details. Please note, Saturday's event is of special significance because officials of the BMRCL, including its Managing Director, will be available on-site. So this is a great opportunity to voice your opinion. Bring friends, bring family, bring colorful posters. See you there. |

| Metro and Lalbagh, Nanda road - what happened and next steps |
[Apr. 25th, 2009|01:03 am] |
|
This past week, Bangalore has demonstrated democracy's true potential by coming out in large numbers protesting the destruction of the world renowned Lalbagh and Lakshman Rao Parks (on Nanda Road) by the insensitivity and lack of care for progressive planning by the Bangalore Metro authorities. All Lok Sabha candidates of Bangalore South have endorsed our stand. Mr. R. Ashok, Karnataka Transport Minister has categorically stated he would instruct the Bangalore Metro officials to stop work forthwith. He has also assured that there would be no tree felling on the note that the Government would be willing to consider realigning the southern reach of the Metro. However, the Bangalore Metro authorities have intensified work on this reach, in total disregard of the Minister's assurances to the public. Hasiru Usiru has been leading a determined struggle to make sure the metro does not violate Lalbagh and Nanda road. After 4 successful protests earlier this week, significant sections of the people of Bangalore and politicians from Bangalore South are now demanding that we need to look at alternate solutions so that Lalbagh and Nanda road are saved. The protest on April 26 is to demand that : - The government issues an order staying current work on of the metro in South Bangalore
- Issues orders for public consultations
- Seriously evaluates proposed alternatives and comes up with a new design
Come join us - Sunday Apr 26, 10:30 am Lalbagh West Gate

[Apr. 20th, 2009|10:37 pm] |
We've had 3 successful protests and things do seem to have moved a bit. Today, Transport Minister Ashok (incharge minister for Bangalore South) has been quoted saying that he will make sure Metro does not impact Lalbagh. Yesterday, all the 4 main candidates from Bangalore South(Mr.Ananth Kumar, Mr.Krishna Byre Gowda, Prof.Radhakrishna and Captain Gopinath ) said that they would like to see the metro re-aligned so that Lalbagh does not get touched. Mr.Byregowda has also mentioned that he wants to see Nanda road saved. We are yet to get more committments for saving Nanda road.
Anyways, we will not rest till we get written assurances that the metro will be re-aligned, after public consultations.
A we continue our protest, our next move is -
Padayatra on R.V.Road, Starting from South-End Circle towards Lalbagh West GateTuesday Apr 21, 5.30pm BMRCL has demolished 500 feet of Lalbagh's wall and has cut trees in Lalbagh, inorder to build a station inside Lalbagh. BMRCL has also confirmed that 323 trees will be cut on R.V.Road(Nanda Road) for the metro. On the night of April 11, BMRCL illegally started cutting trees on Nanda Road and they were stopped by Hasiru Usiru volunteers.
Shouldn't we save Nanda road and Lalbagh, our natural heritage?

Earlier this week 500 feet of Lalbagh's wall was demolished and trees were illegally felled inside Lalbagh. The BMRCL has also sought permission to acquire land in Cubbon Park. [Apr. 17th, 2009|11:07 am] |

Save Lalbagh, Save Nanda Road, Save Bangalore’s future Joing the Protest against the illegal construction of Metro in Lalbagh Friday, Apr 17, 6pm, R. V. Road (at Lalbagh West Gate) Earlier this week (April 13-14), the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) demolished over 500 feet of Lalbagh's wall and cut down trees inside Lalbagh illegally, all for a Metro Station (which can become a parking lot and a Mall soon). This protest is in continuation of the successful protest held on 15 April. Come in large numbers. Bring expressive posters Simply Stated Bangalore’s Metro can go underground and save the city and its landmarks for posterity. We urge the Government to scrap the totally unnecessary Rs. 3,000 crores investment in the High Speed Rail Link from M G Road to Bangalore airport, which will serve the needs of only 30,000 air travellers. We demand the Government invest this Rs. 3000 crores to take the Metro Underground – and serve the needs of lakhs of people now and in future. This is techno-economically possible, if there is political will and vision. Metro's Impact on Lalbagh l1135.18 square metres of Lalbagh Botanical Garden has been acquired for a Metro Station. This has been done by an Ordinance to the Karnataka Parks Act, without prior public consultation or democratic debate. l Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has demolished 500 ft of the wall and cut 5 trees along the Lal Bagh West Gate on 13th-14th April lThis will surely lead to a greater portion of the park being taken away to create parking zones and malls at the Metro stations, as planned. Metro's Impact on Nanda Road and Other Parks When BMRCL sought clearance, it claimed that trees on Nanda Road will only be pruned, not cut. Now in response to an RTI application BMRCL has confirmed that 323 trees will be cut on Nanda – RV road. That is ALMOST ALL TREES ON NANDA ROAD WILL BE CUT. 42 other trees will be pruned and cause a huge loss in Nanda road, tree canopy and park areas BMRCL also plans to acquire land in Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain and Cubbon Park and trees will come under the axe. The alignment through Lalbagh and Nanda Road has been extended to Kanakapura Road in total contravention of the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, and is likely to be an economic disaster as the potential ridership here is not very significant. | Human Chain @Lalbagh on Apr 15, 6pm opposing Illegal Metro Construction in Lalbagh |
[Apr. 15th, 2009|01:06 pm] |
|
Earlier this week(April 13 and 14), the Bangalore Metro Rail corporation (BMRCL) has demolished over 500 feet of Lalbagh’s wall and cut down 5 eucalyptus trees inside Lalbagh. BMRCL proposes to have a Metro station inside Lalbagh itself - Bangalore’s distinctive botanical garden! Lalbagh is protected by a separate, stringent law. In a highly undemocratic move, the Karnataka Government changed the law by moving an ordinance to acquire Lalbagh land for the Metro, rather than prefer a debate over the changed law, in the Assembly. The opposition has also failed to protest this undemocratic move. Lalbagh and Lakshman Rao Park on R.V.Road, (also called the AC Road, Nanda Road ), both major landmarks and heritage of Bangalore are being destroyed for the Metro. This when the High Court is hearing PIL over alternatives in Metro alignment. What seems like a minor portion of Lalbagh gone today will surely lead to greater portion of the park being taken away to create parking zones and malls that the Metro plans at its stations. When they sought clearance, Metro authorities claimed trees on Nanda Road will be pruned, and not felled. Now they want to cut 323 trees on Nanda Road(R.V.Road) alone. The BBMP Tree Officer has confirmed that the tree felling in Lalbagh was not cleared by him. This makes felling of Lalbagh’s heritage trees, daylight robbery! Don’t be a mute witness to this wanton destruction and illegal desecration of our parks and open spaces. Come out and protest. Demand from candidates standing in the Parliamentary Election from Bangalore South to make their stand clear on the issue. Let us stop the illegal construction of Metro in Lalbagh. Join the Human Chain to be formed at the illegal demolition site(at R.V.Road, near Lalbagh westgate) on Wednesday, April 15, 6.00 pm. Be there. 6 pm today |

[Apr. 3rd, 2009|08:45 pm] |
hello everyone =) I have several questions:
I'm currently in the USA. I'm studying nursing, and as I've had a deep interest in Indian culture for many years, I'm interested in spending time there. From what I hear Karnataka is very beautiful, and I think it's the part of India I'd want to visit, if I could.
does anyone know of medical organizations which would accept nurses from the US as volunteers? I know Karnataka is very developed but I want to be doing something helpful to others while I'm there and not just be a tourist. I'm a white male, if that matters. I'd love to become fluent in pretty much any Indian language (actually I'm rather interested in Tulu at the moment).
is it easy to be a vegetarian in Bangalore and/or Tulu Nadu? I'm a vegetarian for religious reasons and that seems hard for a lot of americans to understand. I'm assuming it's easier in India.
this is a shot in the dark, but can anyone tell me anything about Bhuta Kola, it's perception, or its accessability to foreigners? I've studied african religious practices of a similar nature and have have a profound respect for this sort of thing and would be very interested in seeing the south asian varity. I'm also very interested in Veerashaivism but I've found that Veerashaivites are easier to contact via the internet.
thanks for your input on any of the above =) |

| State of security at major places here |
[Feb. 5th, 2009|12:42 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | hopeful | ] | Diamond District, Old Airport Road (I work here) - Checks only between 8-11am at entrances - Checking resumes at ~10pm everynight - If you carry a laptop bag, like most IT people do , you are not checked!!
So if you want to do something , just walk in with a black laptop bag between 11am to 10pm and you would not be asked to even show your ID. Second alternative: Come dressed as a pizza delivery guy. Lots of people (typically from the IT companies here) order pizzas. I have seen Domino's Pizza delivery guys take their scooters right inside. They are never even asked to show their ID's ( as if ID cards cannot be spoofed. but you get the idea)
Bangalore International Airport (International Terminal) - Time 2-5 am ( time when a lot of flights to Europe typically leave) - Walk in past the CISF security people. All they will check is your passport and paper ticket - Dont stop , just walk into the restroom on the ground floor ( near to the CCD ) - Tip the guy who's in charge of the loo 20 bucks and ask him to prevent other people for coming in. Excuse : smoking - End result: the guy will actually stand in front of the door, tell other people that the loo is being cleaned, while you smoke inside. - The loo is almost directly beneath the customs/immigration area on the first floor. Imagine the damage that could be done by planting a bomb there. I know this because I have smoked in the loo at the BIAL at 3 am. And I wasnt the only smoker who uses the "facility"
So you have complete privacy while you do your mischief
Forum & Garuda Mall - Reach both these places past midnight. Typically when the last show gets over. - Get out from the auto, walk straight into either of these malls and get inside. - Do whatever it is you want to do
Majestic bus terminal / Bangalore City railway station - Lets not even get started about security holes in these areas. I could probably write a novel on this.
Motivation behind this post After the Mumbai attacks, I could not help but start looking for security loopholes every time I go to a public place in this city. A city where I live and work in.
I hope people who can make a change get to know of this and things become better.

| Staying and Finding Accommodation in Bangalore |
[Jan. 3rd, 2009|07:03 pm] |
Hello there. I would appreciate if anyone could recommend me an accommodation suitable for a student in Bangalore. I am a PhD student working on my thesis about IT industry, and am planning to stay there from late February until May for my research. So far, the budget hotels and services apartments I have come across on the Internet are still too expensive for me. Thus I am wondering if anyone in this community could recommend me a place to stay or a more specific source where I can find information? I do not need an A/C room and I do not mind staying in women hostel or a rented room. It would help if the place locates near city centre as I need to go interview people.
This will be my first time going to India and I do not know anyone there. Therefore, any other tips about living in Bangalore will be very much appreciated. Thanks.
PS. In my research, I look for the government's policies and initiatives towards the growth of IT industry. So if any of you here are working with the government or the IT business and would like to share your thoughts, it would be great to here from you. |

| BSNL Internet |
[Dec. 16th, 2008|08:24 am] |
This is a question for all BSNL Broadband users.
I want to apply for the Broadband connection offered by BSNL. But I am not able to decide which modem to choose.
1) Should I buy my own modem or take the one provided by BSNL?
2) If I decide to buy my own modem then which modem is a better one (Company and model number would be helpful), how do I configure the modem that I own. Will the installation guys come and configure it?
3) If I take the modem from BSNL, should I opt for rental or out right purchase?
4) Which type of modem should I take, if I am opting to take the modem from BSNL: Type - I Type - II Type - III Type - IV Whats the difference between them all ?
Suggestions like don't go for BSNL connection is not valid, since BSNL is the last option I have got. I have tried every other connection and every thing sucks, especially Wi-MAX. |

| Citizens rally against terrorism - Sunday, 5 p.m, MG Road |
[Dec. 5th, 2008|01:02 am] |
[Got this in an e-mail forward]
Citizens,
November 26 marks a new low in our country's sinking security situation. We are now at a state where every major sphere of our life has been attacked - trains, temples, mosques, cars, markets, parliament, parks, offices - and now hotels. When does this stop? We pay crores and crores of taxes and levies, without even 1 paise bearing a semblance of accountability. We have blamed everybody from God to our politicians for the condition we are in; but the fact remains that we have failed because of our own unwillingness to act and to demand accountability.
People of Bangalore, on December 7th, 2008, let us peacefully set out from our homes, offices, schools, colleges, malls and shops and converge near Anil Kumble circle on MG road at 5 pm!
Please spread the call, forward this message without fear of censure from superiors and peers, for this is the time to act.
Let our voices be heard on December 7th! |

| Think of saying goodbye to your house or shop if... |
[Nov. 7th, 2008|11:12 pm] |
..its located on Ulsoor, Road, Victoria road, K.R.Road, 1st main Chamarajpet, Vanivilas road, Kamaraj road and some 80 other roads. And yeah say goodbye to 30,000 trees as well.
If you don't like the way this is going, please do join us for a protest walk on Sunday, at 11am Lalbagh west gate. If you are wondering what the heck we are protesting for, read on -
Bangalore is going to be torn apart if BBMP's road-widening project is going to get implemented fully. The BBMP feels that the best solution to reduce vehicular congestion is to widen 80 of the city's most prominent roads by widths ranging from 5m - 10m.
No doubt vehicular traffic has increased, but is road-widening really the solution? Does a widened road reduce congestion when bottlenecks remain at the junctions? Cant we try out more grade seperators which actually remove bottlenecks? Besides even if road widening works now, what will we do after 5 years when vehicular population might have increased by 50%? Break more buildings and widen more roads?
Can't we look at more long-term solutions like better a bigger, better BMTC? BMTC buses form 0.1% of our vehicular population and carry half our population(5000 buses carrying 37 lakh people daily). We could have an increased fleet for BMTC, smaller buses for some areas, more volvos for those who dont like normal buses etc. Or maybe introduce congestion taxes for cars, provide cycling tracks etc. And by the way before you mention Metro, let me tell you that after taking portions of Lalbagh, Cubbon Park, destroyiong all the trees in the Nanda theatre road stretch and thousands more and spending 7000 crores- the Metro will carry a max of 10 lakh passengers when Phase 1 is complete. compare this with 37 lakh carried by the BMTC now. And inspite of all this, if we do want to have the metro, we're saying - take it underground- save shops, homes and trees.
The thought behind the protest walk is - To tell the BBMP that they need to really look at all possible alternatives, consult the public before embarking on such a mammoth , disruptive project like road widening of 80 roads - Tell the metro folks to please take the metro underground
Any by the way , let me tell you that the the honourable high court of Karnataka has questioned the very legality of the road widening project since it violates a number of existing laws like the Karnataka Town and country planning act.
Once again, please do join us for the walk on Sunday, Nov 9 at 11am, Lalbagh west gate. If you're still not convinced, please shoot your questions and lets have a public debate here atleast :-)
p.s : read this for more details http://www.esgindia.org/campaigns/Tree%20felling/Hasire%20Usiru/index.html
for full list of roads being widened - http://www.bmponline.org/account-dept/roadwidng.shtml
