STUPID LAKE EFFECT [Dec. 9th, 2009|11:30 am]

cszego
No, see, the thing about the first snowfall of the year is that it works better if there's snow. The first slushfall just doesn't have the same ring.

FESTIVE WRAPPING [Dec. 8th, 2009|05:35 pm]

cszego
A block north of Queen on Bathurst some artistic soul has covered a row of ring-and-post bicycle racks in red and white wrapping paper. They look very cheerful.

I, too, decorated my house for the holidays this weekend. Okay, by 'decorated' I mean 'cleaned', but hey: things are all sparkly, and it only happens a couple times a year. Thus, decorated.

OH, NOW I GET IT. OR NOT. WHATEVER. [Dec. 3rd, 2009|04:50 pm]

cszego
After much explaining, arguing and waiting on hold, it turns out the answer is actually:
C) they didn't mean to tell us* that our pickup day had changed. Because it hasn't. It's still Thursday.

YOUR EARTH LOGIC CONFUSES ME [Dec. 3rd, 2009|11:31 am]

cszego
Here's a question for you. If you got a notice from the City saying your pickup day for garbage and recycling had been changed from Thursday to Wednesday, would you:
A) assume your garbage and recycling would henceforth be picked up on Wednesday, or
B) realize the message was code for "We're never picking up your garbage or recycling again! Nyah!"

Apparently A is the wrong answer. Who knew?

HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN, JIGGETY JIG [Nov. 30th, 2009|05:18 pm]

cszego
Ahhh. There's nothing like returning from vacation to a towering stack of paperwork. Then again, the giant box of chocolates made it much easier to bear. To whoever left us the treats: thank you!

NOTES FROM AFAR [Nov. 25th, 2009|12:59 am]

cszego
After spending a couple days on the north shore of Oahu, I've come to the following conclusions.
1. Ten foot waves are beautifully hypnotic and utterly terrifying.
2. Surfers are crazy.
3. The sun, it is hot.

(I didn't say they were profound conclusions).

FOR ALL YOUR CORY NEEDS [Nov. 19th, 2009|02:17 pm]
avatarprimeb
Just in case you wanted still more Cory Doctorow, we've just received the latest Locus Magazine, which has Cory on the front, and an interview "Riding the Wave" inside. Okay, maybe it's not as big news as a signing or launch or party or what have you, but hey, you go with what you've got.

CORY, REDUX [Nov. 16th, 2009|12:33 pm]

cszego
Er, so you know that bit below where I said I'd make Cory sign plenty of copies for the store? Well, in this case, by 'plenty', I mean 'four'.

We have only four signed copies of Makers left*. So if you want a signed copy, now's the time. They won't last long.

*and those only because the lovely person from Fenn dug up a few extras for us. Cory's a rock star!

BIG DAY TOMORROW [Nov. 13th, 2009|02:54 pm]

cszego
Tomorrow's going to be a lot of fun. Three writers from ChiZine Publications will be here, each of them with a new book. David Nickle will launch Monstrous Affections; Claude Lalumière will launch Objects of Worship; and Robert J. Wiersema will launch World More Full of Weeping. With so much booky goodness on offer, we'll get started earlier than usual. So please join us at 2pm (not at 3pm, as we said in an earlier email*).

*because we have very poor memories. 2pm. Two

CORY! [Nov. 12th, 2009|12:41 pm]

cszego
In case you haven't heard, Cory Doctorow is in town today. This evening we'll launch his new book, Makers, at the Merril Collection. The Merril is at 239 College, just east of Spadina, on the third floor of the Lillian Smith Library. Cory will get started at 7pm, but his events are usually SRO, so come a little earlier if you want a seat.

If you can't make the event but would like us to get a copy of Makers personalized for you, you have until 5pm today to let us know. But if you miss that deadline, don't despair: we'll make Cory sign lots of copies for the store.

ONE MINUTE [Nov. 10th, 2009|02:12 pm]

cszego
Tomorrow is November 11th. As is usual on Remembrance Day, we won't open at 11am; instead, we'll open after 11:01am.

Because one minute of silence really isn't too much to ask.

THAT WHITE STUFF? [Nov. 5th, 2009|03:07 pm]

cszego
...that's bouncing off the street? Yeah, that's snow.

In unrelated* news, we have a signing this weekend. Deborah Cooke, who is currently the Writer in Residence at the Toronto Public Library, will be here on Saturday to launch her new novel, Winter Kiss. So come in from the cold at 3pm, and join us to celebrate.

*by 'unrelated', we mean 'related'. We've had dozens and dozens of events here over the years, of which maybe two occured on nice days.

MMM... FALL [Nov. 3rd, 2009|03:33 pm]

cszego
It's nice to know that no matter how old I am on the surface, when faced with a giant pile of leaves, I'm still four years old inside.

Wheeee!

STORMS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT GATHER [Oct. 27th, 2009|02:14 pm]
avatarprimeb
Well, we've finally got the latest in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, The Gathering Storm, via collaboration with Brandon Sanderson. Present quantities are limited, but we will be getting more shortly, so don't worry if you can't find one right off the bat.

edit

Quantities are not so limited anymore. If someone doesn't come down and buy some soon, our floors may colapse under the weight. Yes, the book is that big.

GIVEAWAY GOODNESS [Oct. 26th, 2009|12:00 pm]

cszego
Oooh, we've got something cool to give away!

Jared Hess, director of Napolean Dynamite, is in town this week for a special screening of his new film Gentlemen Broncos. And we're giving away passes to the screening (which comes complete with a Q&A session with Hess afterwards). Each pass is good for two people, but seating is on a first come, first served basis. The show is this Thursday, October 29th, at 8pm at the AMC theatre at Yonge & Dundas.

You want a pass? We've got ten, going to the first respondents. To be fair though, if you haven't picked up the pass by Thursday, we'll give it to the next person on the list.

WINNER! AND MORE WINNERS! [Oct. 13th, 2009|02:12 pm]

cszego
The winner of the Godzilla on Sundays tickets is Hugh Gamble. Yay, Hugh!

And we have another Very Cool contest. The International Festival Of Authors is one of the world's pre-eminent literary gatherings, held right here in Toronto's Harbourfront. This year the Festival runs from October 21-31, and Eoin Colfer's coming!

Yes, that's right: Eoin Colfer. The man who wrote And Another Thing, the sixth book in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy. He's going to be reading from the book, then interviewed by Mark Askwith on Thursday, October 22 at 8pm in the Lakeside Terrace*. The IFOA is giving away three pairs of tickets. All you have to do is email them with the answer to the following question.

What is the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything?
a) Forty-two
b) Twenty-eight
c) Fifty-seven

E-mail your answer to readings (at) harbourfrontcentre (dot) com by 5pm on Monday, October 19. Please write “COLFER TIX” in the subject line. It's time sensitive: the first three people to e-mail the correct answer will win.

For more info about this event (and all the other amazing authors who'll be here) visit the IFOA site.
