As soon as I saw this cake on the wonderful
Cream Puffs in Venice blog, I knew that it would be recreated in my kitchen the first time I had a good excuse. And honestly, it wouldn't have taken much. Fundraising event? Oh sure, I'll make a Cannoli Cake. Your hamster died? I have just the thing to assuage your grief. All your adult teeth finally came in? Terrific, I'd love to make a Cannoli Cake for you to test them out on. Passed your driver's test on the 7th try? Surely you deserve a Cannoli Cake.
As it turned out, my Italian grandfather turned 83 yesterday and the family asked me if I could "bring something" to the celebration. Are you kidding me? I'll bring something all right....
It did not dissappoint. The orange zest made it refreshing, the fact that it wasn't frosted made it feel like a lighter cake even though it is rich and delicious. It'll have a repeat engagement in my home for sure.
Sorry the pictures are dark and unremarkable. I promise the cake is anything but.
