Smack Snacks

I'd never even thought of posting this here until I saw the entry for homemade dog treats. I figured this would be worth posting because with over 8,000 members, certainly someone must have a pet rabbit. :)

This is my recipe for homemade rabbit treats. It's a bit time-consuming and makes a big mess, but it's worth it because it's so much healthier than treats sold in stores (which are usually the rabbit equivalent of donuts and candy bars). My three bunnies go CRAZY for these snacks, and Amy Sedaris' rabbit, Dusty, goes so bonkers for these that Amy put the recipe in her hospitality cookbook, I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence. So if you have a pet rabbit (or have a friend who does), you might want to give these a shot.

EASY DOG BISCUITS

I have started to bake my own dog biscuits. You can them as a supplement to fresh meat, and your dog can avoid all the nasty and potentially carcinogenic ingredients in store-bought food.

This recipe is easy and can be stored in your fridge. You'll save a huge amount of money too. I invented the following recipe by combining some pre-existing ones, plus some of my own ideas.

Do your pet and favour and make him some! Your dog will have a better meal and your kitchen will smell like delicious bread.

  Chickeny Cheddary Crunchy Dog Treats

I made these dog treats as a Christmas gift for my mom's two Miniature Schnauzers. I have to admit -- I even tasted them myself (they're pretty good! Well, for dog biscuits).

  Icons
05 December 2007, 05:31 pm

Since my boyfriend bought me a Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas (OMGWTFKNOTB!!! It's supposed to be delivered tomorrow!!), and I have no baking icons, I decided to combine the two and make me one. I decided to make a couple more and post them here, in case anyone else wanted one, too. No credit needed, just let me know if you're taking it because I'm curious. :-) I'm not an "icon maker" by any means, I just know enough to play around in photoshop and sometimes I get decent results.

Here's a recipe from my new dog food cookbook.

LIVER TREATS

1 pound raw beef liver
1 small box of Jiffy corn muffin mix

Put the liver, with juice, and 1/4 cup water in a blender and liquefy.
Mix the liquefied liver with the muffin mix and pour into a greased 8 x 11 baking dish. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.

The Gollum tried these last night and gave them two very enthusiastic paws up. I had to try them myself, of course, and they are actually quite good. I took a small bag full to my neighbor - the one with the four chihuahuas. The rat dogs, who always bark continuously when I'm over there, quit barking and started dancing around on their hind legs when they got one of these.

The recipe makes a lot. Freeze what you don't need right away.

  bangin' birdie bread

a great birdie-bread packed full of healthy goodies for your feathered friends.

base ingredients
3 free-range brown eggs, with eggshell (crushed)
4tbs lafauber hand-feeding formula
14oz carrot or sweet potatoe baby food
1tsp powdered cuttlebone

additional ingredients
1/2 bag of kaytee's healthy toppings "carrot and greens"
shredded kale
shredded parsley
1tsp pellets
1tsp spoonful parakeet seed

this is a modified recepie from this site, that i packed full of healthy goodies. preheat the oven to 350F. i mixed the hand-feeding formula, baby food, cuttlebone, seed, pellets, kaytee toppings and eggs together in a bowl. the hand-feeding forumla was a little clumpy so i blended the mixture with an egg-beater on medium speed. i crushed the eggshells in the food processor before throwing them in. my dad noticed that the free-range eggs i used for these muffins have much thicker shells... healthy chickens lay healthy eggs. i took a handful of parsley and a few kale leaves, shredded them in my food processor and mixed them into the batter as well. i poured the batter into a cupcake tray (i recommend paper-liners!) and baked in the oven for about 10 minutes (when the toothpick came out clean).

  Trail mix
07 January 2007, 01:50 pm

I don't know if this community consider trail mix 'baking', but I do. Mom and I just made a big batch of it.

Trail mix )

1. Combine all dry ingredients with honey, sugar and spices until everything is coated. Spray a cookie sheet lined with foil and toast in 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until brown. Let cool.
2. Meanwhile, prepare dried fruits in separate bowl. When the cereal mixture is completely cooled, add fruit and mix the whole thing together. If desired, sprinkle some mini chocolate chips on top. Store in a cool, dry place.

salt baked pears and caramel sauce
10 October 2000, 02:39 pm
mood: loving them pears!

A final send-off for our old cooker, I'm afraid their are no pictures as we ate these off paper plates and also because my big pc is now packed up and ready for the big move (on thursday morning!)

I have a complete thing for the Martha Stewart living magazine, I love the craft ideas, presentation/decoration inspirations, the whole feel of the glossy paper (yes, my family and I have a big weakness for paper) but the recipes? not so much, having tried a few I'm not desperately impressed, until now!

these pears are more or less unfiddled with... the caramel sauce is my own favourite

four (or six) pears, I liked this with red pears, which on better plates would have looked glorious, all burnished and shining. pick ones with nice long stems
sea salt crystals, a lot! enough to pour a layer on the base of a bowl (earthenware or pottery for the best result) and then to completely bury the pears

ok, spread a thick'ish layer of salt on the base, arrange your pears on top and bury completely. bake in a 180/350 oven for around 65 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a skewer.

remove them and knock off most of the salt, leave some crystals clinging (more or less depending on how much you enjoy slted caramel tastes)

plate the pears on a nice bowl (ha! I missed this step, paper plates work but are not at all glamorous)

drizzle with caramel sauce and serve, I like to serve the extra sauce in a jug also...

oh yes! the sauce

weigh into a pan
50g unsalted butter
150g golden syrup
3 tablespoons of light brown sugar
2 tablespoons of white sugar

melt this together and bubble for around four minutes

add 140ml of double cream, stir till smooth

for these pears I added two tablespoons of monkey shoulder whiskey, but I think poire william eau de vie would be lovely! I may also try infusing the caramel with rosemary or bay leaves.

I hope you enjoy! this makes an incredible breakfast, the pears fridge cold and the sauce warmed to bubbling.

I look forward to getting back to baking next week, the halloween/housewarming party will be nearly upon me! lol, a flurry of baking will ensue.

  brie bake
22 September 2006, 04:35 pm

I completely forgot to take pictures of this, but I made it last night for a Grey's Anatomy Party we hosted (along with chocolate chip cookies). It also was gone in about 15 minutes. Plus it's easy and tastes wonderful.

you will need
1 wheel of brie
1 thing of Puff Pastry
Brown Sugar
Almonds
1 beaten egg

Preheat oven to 400

Open Brie-- cut wax off of it. using a knife or unflavored dental floss-- cut brie in half. put about a tablespoon of brown sugar on each half with about a tablespoon of almonds- put brie back together so the brown sugar and almonds are sandwiched
Open can of puff pastry using 4 of the triangles make a square out of them.
put brie on the pastry, sprinkle brown sugar on and and then bring corners of the pastry up and around the brie
using two more of the triangles of pastry, cut out a circle and place on top of brie-- use left over pastry to decorate with shapes and etc on top
give it a nice egg wash and put in the oven for 20 minutes.

after 20 minutes it should be nice and golden, lower the temp to 325, place a piece of tin foil over the  top of the brie so not to have the crust burn and let bake for another 15-20 minutes
take out and serve with apple and pear slices.

My very first post! Strawberry shortcake, everything from scratch.
12 September 2006, 07:23 pm

+ 2 images. Recipe cut for length. )

This recipe is delicious. I changed a few things for mine. For the filling I used a full teaspoon of vanilla extract and on the strawberries I didn't use nearly 1/8 cup sugar - I don't like my strawberries very sweet. I also did a half and half mixture of light brown sugar/white sugar. White sugar is sweet on the verge or acidic to me. I hope you enjoy!

Ok, here's an easy, homemade recipe for vanilla!
Take a spaghetti sized glass jar, fill it with vodka (the cheaper, the better), slice open two vanilla beans (they come in a pack of two at Trader Joe's), put the vanilla beans in the jar and shake it up.  Place it in a cool, dark place (the cupboards work just fine) and leave it.  Shake it up every couple of days and it's ready to use when it reaches a dark yellowish-brown colour.

Enjoy!

Does anyone have any recipes for some tasty dog biscuits, or any sort of dog-friendly baked good?

Thank you :)

  Rum Balls
07 June 2006, 03:40 pm

Ever wondered what to do with these dried leftover pieces of cake or cupcakes?
Here's a tasty recipe that is fast and easy.
These are a modification of a Western recipe known as rum balls, in Russia they're called potatoes. The taste is similar to rum balls, but a bit more gooey and moist.
