Hello all.
I'm going to be in Dublin for 9 months starting September, and will need internet use in my apartment for online courses. However, most places don't seem to have this listed as an amenity. If anyone knows anything about lettings:
Do most places have internet, but don't list it?
Would it be possible to acquire internet (through purchasing a router or other like means), once I'm there?

As an aside: what does the term "rent allowance not accepted" imply?
Is sub-letting ever used (most places seem to require 1-year leases which would mean paying 3 months rent for nothing), or would it be seen as extremely odd and/or not allowed?

If anyone knows the answers to these, thanks so much!

Dublin Pride 25, Always the Bridesmaid Never the Bride

Dublin Pride 25, Always the Bridesmaid Never the Bride -

This is the rousing theme of the Dublin Pride Festival '08, which begins on Friday June 13th and comes to its climax on Saturday June 21st. With it's infamous explosion of colour transforming the streets of Dublin, this year's festival will be celebrating the city's 25th Pride Parade while highlighting the desire for further recognition regarding LGBTQ partnership rights.

The anniversary not only commemorates the Stonewall Riots of New York 1969, but marks the important changes which have taken place in gay life over the past 25 years and the positive attitudes of Ireland and Dublin toward the gay community. Dublin Pride Ltd have planned a ten day festival of family fun that the entire city can be proud of.

'I am proud to be Lord Mayor of a city, which this year celebrates our 25th Dublin Pride Parade. Every year our Pride festival infuses Dublin with colour and atmosphere unique to our gay community and I am thoroughly looking forward to June as I'm sure Pride 08 will be one to remember'. - Lord Mayor of Dublin Paddy Bourke.

Dear all!
I’m an exchange student from Moscow State University (Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Religious Studies). I’m going to spend a trimester (Michaelmas Term) at the School of Religions and Theology, Trinity College. And there is an urgent problem I’m puzzled over: where is it possible to find the cheapest accomodation in Dublin? Actually my resources are quite modest. Is it possible to find somebody to share a room with? Should I, alternatively, look for a youth hostel?

Irish School System

Hullo folks, my name is Tabitha. I'm an American (gag), and my husband and I want to move to Ireland, preferably in two years but who knows how long it might take. But first, I need information! That's why I'm going to ask a few questions, particularly this time about the Irish School System. Hope y'all don't mind...

1.) How is the school system broken up? In America we have Elementary and High School.
2.) Are there school counselors? If that doesn't ring a bell, the basic idea is someone who encourages good class choices, helps you look at colleges and decide what's right for you, and generally gives you advice and listens to your problems.
3.) Is there a website you can direct me to that gives information about getting a job at an Irish school?

Thanks for putting up with my questions... There will probably be many more to come in the future.

Tabitha

Similar to other post-ers when I wanted to go where everybody would know my name I often propped up the bar at the Liars Club (Fibz), Bruxelles and other such ilk. Also an aspiring writer but lately I do a lot more aspiring and a lot less writing (read: am usually too drunk to type/hold a pen and bend people’s ears philosophizing and opining why Melville & Hemmingway can eat my shorts and just who would kick whose ass were it to come down to a game of Scrabble between me and that gobshite Joyce.)
Anyway, that’s me and I’ll be posting here from time to time.

Hi... I'm moving to Dublin next month (from the states) and living with some Dublin friends (product of a term in Galway). The problem is...I have no idea where the house is.

My friend has told me that it's in an area called Spencer's Dock, and that it's a short way from Trinity, where one of the housemates is studying.

Does this sound familiar to anybody? I haven't been able to find info on it anywhere... thanks!

I'm Mr Wombat and I'm too paranoid to post my real name here. People say to me, "Glen, why are you so paranoid?" and I say "Well, it's in case people in work see this and look back over the bits where I addressed them personally and calld them names in those sort of 'letters you'd love to send' type things"

I live in donnybrook, I might have to move soon since my girlfriend is moving to cork for a while for a job. I hate moving house but I also hate sharing with or renting to a stranger even more. Especially after the Bridgemont-schitzo-killed-his-mum incident in finglas.

I work in software testing, have done so for years now. It's okay, not amazingly interesting but as was pointed out to me on friday - almost entirely responsibility free. My dream is to find the secret behind the success of shitty irish authors and emulate it, thus earning giant wads of cash for writing about "realistic" characters like Cindi the 22 year old TV producer and her long lost love, Juan the millionaire she met in a disco in the costa del sol but spurned him, despite his millions because his father had once kicked a puppy and now she realises her mistake. Cindi would live in an unrealistically huge flat in Dublin's city center (all the better to make people wonder where they're going wrong since they're 30 and sharing a house in rialto) and have a clumsy yet lovable dog named Butch, who has cancer and can also fly. She would also have a dark secret about a back alley abortion she had shortly after spurning Juan that would of course become known to the world at large half way through the book.

I would call it "Flames of Spanish Desire" and it would have words in it like "throbbing" and "immense".
This is my idea, if u use it i will SUE U!!!1

This is as the userinfo suggests, a community for dublin folk. Not being sure of who's who, or if there are lurkers about (I know some LJers from lurking on fibberslist, or from Irish Gaming circles), I threw it up here in the hopes that people'll start using it, for whatever purpose (probably significantly different to the intention/thing-in-the-user-info, but hey).

Oh, and I'm DoC. I'm from Artane, and I work in Blackrock. You may remember me from such pubs as fibbers, and such gaming caons as most of them, except in the last year or so, when I've stopped bothering with anything but Gaelcon, qcon and sillicon.

Hopefully if more people arrive along, they can post a wee intro. Even if it's as terse as the above.
