Can someone please, please, PLEASE explain the appeal of yaoi RP over all other sorts of RP?

I'm a heterosexual male. One of my biggest RP limitations is that I cannot bring myself to RP characters who are not both heterosexual and male. Okay, I can deal with that. But I recently got rejected from an RP /only/ because I was unwilling to RP yaoi.

This is frustrating to no end, because judging by some of the applications on the applying LJs, yaoi is, by far, the most popular style. Someone please for the love of god explain it to me, because the people playing it aren't even the gay guys (judging by the gay guy RPers I know, who really don't care either way).

EDIT: Yes, I realize that guys like two girls going at it, and girls like two guys going at it. It just seems so strange - to me - that girls are infinitely more willing to play gay guys, and seem to prefer it, than guys are willing to play lesbian girls.

You can only RP straight guys, and you're wondering why people only want to RP gay guys?

...yes, I am. You could actually answer my question, though, instead of answering with a snarky comment.

I acknowledge my limitation. Other people don't seem to have this limitation and yet still choose to RP yaoi over anything else.

So would you kindly actually answer the question instead of sniping at me?

It's perfectly acceptable for guys to like two girls go at it. Personally, I see no issue for why it shouldn't be acceptable for us to like two guys going at it, and I need no more reason or logic than that. If you like it, you like it. :O)

So find a game where you can play a heterosexual male. Doesn't sound like a big loss if a game rejected you for not falling into line.

Many women use RP as outlet the way that men might use pure porn. One thing is certain, it is hella easier to RP smut with others around than it is to surf for visual smut.

I'd be willing to venture that yaoi RP's are populated at least 90% by females. (( Not even necessarily straight females. I've known some strictly homosexual females that really liked yaoi RP's. ))

Being a straight female RP'er, I can only begin to hypothesize on the appeal to other straight female RP'ers. And that is that; one guy, good. Two guys, even better! That, and, in most yaoi RP's, you tend to see guys in a way that you never really would, elsewhere... easily expressing emotions, crying, and so forth. So, I guess there's that?

this may sound ridiculous, but i find it easier to role play slash (which i assume yaoi is another word for?) than i do to role play heterosexual stuff. i have had, in the entirety of my role playing (in which i've paired up characters), three heterosexual characters. other than that it's usually slash and/or bisexuality (though leaning more toward their own gender). *shrug* that's just me, though.

Thank you for asking this without bashing yaoi itself. Watch the thread get wanky anyway. ^_^;;;

Just like a lot of straight guys like the idea of two girls together, a lot of straight girls (and bi girls) like the idea of two guys together. I've also noticed that the majority of online roleplaying is made up of girls, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure there's other psychological reasons you could create all sorts of theories for, but the truth is I could never explain the EXACT reason I like slash/yaoi. I like the fact that it's arousing to me, I like playing a relationship that's a little forbidden by society's standards, as a GLBT rights activist I like playing out gay relationships because they get so little visibility in public entertainment. Maybe my daddy never loved me enough, or all that psychological BS people say about yaoi fans, hell if I know. I like it. Good enough for me. :)

There are some specifically yaoi-based RPGs, but unless something is specifically being advertised as that (in which case, you wouldn't join a sci-fi RPG as a pirate, y'know?), no one should oust a player for not having the same idea of what's fun to play as they do. Not cool, IMO.

And as far as why guys don't play lesbians more: there's the 'girls RP online more' thing, but also (cue amateur psychobabble) I think a lot of guys find it weird to play a girl, even a gay girl, moreso than a girl would find it weird to play a guy. It's not as socially acceptable or something, maybe. You hear about a lot of guys on MMORPGs, or other more male-dominated RPGs, taking on female avatars and trying to roleplay sex or something - so it could also be that some guys (and I'm speaking generally here) would rather just have the porn aspect of lesbian sex without playing out that cuddly romance stuff.

GOOD LORD YOU'RE QUESTIONING IT, HOW DARE YOU. Manbitch. :(

Seriously though, I can understand where you're coming from, as I've had to deal with it many times myself (though as a female playing a heterosexual female who therefore gets no attention paid to her at all ever in certain games), but I can't give you any explanation other than what everyone else has given you, minus the jumping on your ass. They just like it, and it seems to be what the majority of people like.

Now, however, if you would like to have a serious conversation on why so many people insist on forcing bad yaoi with no semblance of decent characterization or anything besides buttsex on everyone else, I'm sure we'd all totally be up for that.

What? You were rejected just because you wouldn't play it? Or because you said you didn't like it?

I think people get touchy because they assume if someone dislikes it, they're a homophobe. But it's just not everyone's taste. So if you'd merely expressed no interest in playing it, that's just some lameness on the side of the people that run the RP. Do you really want to play with them anyway?

I think there are different reasons why yaoi in RPing is so popular. Yaoi itself is pretty popular in the online world. I love it myself, obviously. But it's not for everyone.

I understand what you mean, though... I was called sexist once because I didn't want to play a straight female. But... I AM a straight female.

I know one thing I've encountered is that a lot of rpers in LJ rp seem to be female - this is odd to me as I began on mushes where I was often in the minority of female rpers.

I also know that many, of all sexualities, find it difficult to rp relationships that mirror their rl ability/preference. I have a friend that is a lesbian and only plays gay males. It's easier to distance one's self from the relationship if you are playing something you can't have irl. Being a gay male allows the distance that a het, or even lesbian, female can't.

As for the reason why women play more gay males than men play lesbians? Again, it depends where you game. On my last much, many males played lesbian females searching for girl on girl action whereas I played a gay male because it was easier to get true rp and not cyber with a gay male than any female.

I don't find it strange at all that women are more comfortable playing opposite gender than guys are.

While women's gender roles have changed in the past few decades (ever so slowly, but there has been sure change, we can wear pants and strap ons!), guys are stuck in the same holding pattern they've been in for centuries. You must be masculine, macho, what have you. To play a woman--even a lesbian, you would have to play out emotions that are decidedly not masculine. Further more, many men would probably worry that their own sexuality might be questioned. Since many men in slash/yaoi games (especially games based on yaoi/shonen-ai series which were written specifically to appeal to women) it's no stretch to play a gay guy. Takes much bigger balls for a guy to play a gay chick.

You probably weren't accepted because if you didn't want to RP yaoi then you most probably would be uncomfortable and just fall of the face of the RP itself, which is just a lot of wasted time for both parties. :)

Why I like it? It's probably why people like certain genres, a personal preference.

Yaoi just seems to be the new het, as I say. Nothing to offend anyone who likes yaoi - I do, too, but up to a certain extent.

I can understand where you're coming from. I usually play males, and, shocking enough, they're in relationships with females. I love playing Leon - strong, outspoken, a leader for the others when Cid's busy - and he's in a relationship with Aerith. Yes, I know, shocking as it could be Cloud (who did profess to Leon that he liked him), but he's definitely with Aerith.

I know it's frustrating; some of the most interesting RPGs say they encourage yaoi very strongly, and so it can be a turn-off. But I'm sure you'll have some luck finding an RPG that will satisfy you. (Maybe take a look at [info]toujourshotel?)

As many said... it's hard to explain why, I just like it. As a girl I mostly RP guys, and always have prefered to RP guys, even before I was a yaoi fan. It's just more comfortable for me to RP them than it is for me to RP a girl-- honestly, don't ask me why, I know it sounds incredibly odd but it's true.

Personal preference. Like, someone likes country music, another doesn't. It's something you like, don't like, or don't care either way about.

Though like [info]luna_hoshino said, I get tired of seeing it all around, especially if there's no effort to build a relationship between the two characters before they get into that sort of thing.

Unless, well, that's how their character is. Or something.

Yeeeah, I'll shut up now.

Also, I have to say I appreciate you asking sanely, and that's just sucky that you couldn't get into a game simply because your limitations don't include yaoi RP.

Just like everyone else has been saying, most people like yaoi just... because. No real reason for it, though I've heard it explained that it might get rid of the jealousy that some women might get for the girl on the receiving end of the man, so they can just enjoy the smut. Or it might be that with a guy/guy pairing, they have a choice of which position they want to be in.

As for why it's so prominent in online RPs... Well, this is just my own theory but I think it's because that, society-wise, it's almost expected that young men will have a stash of porn somewhere, and that they masturbate. As for woman, it's mostly showed as... almost wrong for a girl to have those things. And with the internet, you can show what you really like without the fear of being ridiculed or looked at oddly because of what you like. =\ Badly said, but you get my meaning.

I can admit, here, that I'm a yaoi-fan, but unless I really knew you well IRL, I wouldn't even bring up RP.

For the record, I don't believe that it's wrong for men or women to have porn/do whatever they want with their bodies, so don't jump on me about it.

Goodness, you've gotten a lot of comments thus far. :)

It's rather unfair that you were rejected from an RP simply because you were unwilling to RP yaoi scenes. Unless otherwise stated, I don't think they should be able to do that to you - simply because that shouldn't be a 'make it or break it' kind of deal.

That's biased-ness for you. Sadly. :\

Personally, I have no issue with yaoi - Hell, I play men far more often than females and generally they end up in romantic relationships with men. But that doesn't mean I'm being discriminate towards other kinds of relationships in role-play - I just play out what comes naturally for the character. Of course, I'm personally a little bent and let my characters do the same.

The appeal of it? Well, I couldn't explain it to you. Though, many of the commenters already have had their hand at it. I simply enjoy male/male relationships in role-play more than, say, female/male relationships. It's a personal choice, but not everyone is the same.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. ;_;

Let me preface this the way I find myself prefacing a lot of my RP stories.

Ages and ages ago, back when the years started with "19", I RPed on AOL. Yes, this was a bad move in and of itself, but if you wanted fast, meaningless RP, it was a good place to start. However, if you wanted to RP anything that made sense (meaning anything that wasn't a DBZ ripoff where the players "RPed" with "powrz up 2 SSJ 38561859309239750000000000000000000 n usse kamahamehe adn killz u!!!"), you had to be something of a snob. And I, for one, quickly found that the one way to run off the chatspeak-using, capslock-abusing, grammar-impaired throngs was to enter a male character, and when he was hit on by the ubiquitous oversexy female in lingerie (M'Lady, anyone?), have him declare to the room he was gay.

Suddenly, I was shunned by all the people I wanted to be shunned by and I found other serious RPers who had no problem with the fact that I had created a *gasp* gay character.

It was a characterisation that was new to the RP scene and a fun thing to experiment with. Roleplaying gay characters became a way to show maturity in that you could deal with people being gay and not resort to OMGUFAG right off the bat.

Since then, a lot of things have changed. Now, playing gay characters is popular and has become the ubiquitous. The people who once originated the buxom women in lingerie now generate the short, willowy bois with waist-length silver hair, and I theorise it's because they discovered that the people who really wanted to RP left their shallow females behind.

I still have my preference in playing gay male characters, but they aren't, by far, the only characters I play. I have straight men, straight women, bisexuals of both genders, try-sexuals, and asexuals. Why are people fascinated with it? I can only speak for myself. I play it because I enjoy it, but I'm not going to limit myself with it. But what people RP is what they want to RP, or they RP what they think will get them RP. But I know why I started.

I have no problem with yaoi, provided people aren't expecting me to make a canon C who isn't gay gay for the benefit of them acting out some fandom wank thing.
It's just...I dunno. I know there are scads of people who do just that, but it doesn't gel for me.
I mean, I've bent this a bit. I've had mary sues hitting on my Cs and occasionally done the harlequin romance thang and let them hook up (although I draw the line at cyber babies. That to me is just freaky.) but I always make it a struggle if the C isn't by its nature as the person who wrote it all that sexual.

As a bisexual in real life I find it a harder- and therefore a sign you're a better RPer if you can play something NOT in your nature or liking- thing to play a C as homophobic than to make it something it's not.

I guess after reading all the responses I don't have much to add except to summarize it as...

a) they like it
b) are homosexual or bisexual themselves
c) it's a trend and they're jumping on the band wagon
d) they're so wishy washy they don't know what they want
e) are trying to drown problems with lots of online sex
f) are 16 year old virgins

*blinks* d, e and f may sound rather harsh, yet this has been my RP experience and a, b and c are often far more likely.

Your question reminds me of my question of "why do so many people play slut characters?" I don't understand it. It is not my thing as for some strange reason monogamy is important to me and the characters I play I tend to identify with that. It's not even a casual sex issue... it's a true to one partner issue, whether they're homosexual or heterosexual. And the fact characters who are sluts tend to abound in RPs where there are no other type of relationships but the romantic even if that's not the focus of the RP. But that was not your question and I shall end my rabbit trail. *shuts up*

Been there, man. I'd been playing at this one place off and on for a couple of weeks when it hit me, like a cold hard fish to the face, that I was playing one of something like three heterosexual guys on the comm, perhaps because I myself am a heterosexual guy.

To some extent, I think it's just the demographics. Guys who're into roleplaying games tend towards tabletop dicerolling; girls who're into it tend towards interactive fiction like online freeform games, or diceless tabletop systems. (Totally anecdotal evidence there, I know, but it's all I've got unless you want to take time out for a representative survey.)

In turn, girls like what pr0nz they like, so when the RP takes a turn for the pr0nzy, it tends towards guy-on-guy action written by girls. If you can handle it, it's often a great source of inadvertent comedy, the same way badly-written F/F fanfics are for women in the know. Cocks often do not work that way.

At the same time, guys who like the girl-on-girl action don't tend to want to run in there and write it starring themselves. Perhaps it is because of an inferior knowledge of the workings of the vagina; perhaps it is because a young man with a healthy interest in girls licking girls down there has more and easier options available to him on the Internet; perhaps it is because guys tend to reinforce each other less than girls do. Who knows? I am an armchair Internet sociologist at best and I don't have enough data. The point is, girls like to autogenerate porn, guys don't. Who knew.

Girls are also more into relationship-driven RP than guys are, or so my experience would lead me to believe; guys tend to want to Do Something like overthrow the evil empire or at least go kick the evil thing in the schlong, whereas girls seem to be happy just sitting around and existing within the persona they've chosen, pursuing relationships and leading a second (or fifty-second) fictional life.

Nothing wrong with that at all, naturally, but it's a question of differing styles, and in such a female-dominated RP environment, it's a style you have to come to terms with if you want to play. They like what they like, and what they like is often gay relationship drama. Bizarre? To yours and my perspective, certainly, but the entire hobby is inherently bizarre. Tuesday night, I'm gonna be rolling dice and pretending to be a pirate. It's all a matter of perspective.

That said, getting dropped from an RP because you don't want to write yaoi is fucking lame, unless you were, you know, applying at hogwartsneedzlube or some other obviously yaoi-themed RP, and if that's the case, then you're a shrieking retard and I hereby shun you. Presuming that you are not a shrieking retard and this was not an explicitly yaoi-themed RP, then again: fucking lame.

I think that was one of the best worded replies I've *ever* seen.

I couldn't tell you, and I'm of the situation of most yaoi players: straight (albeit slightly curvy; I do admire the female form) female player. I have nothing against homosexuality, I celebrated like everyone with half a brain did when they legalized marriage for gay folks here in Canada, and seeing two guys (or gals) together doesn't squick me out at all. I do roleplay both men and women, and those men and women have been straight, bi, gay, and asexual, and I've wrote NC-17 scenarios involving all (even the asexual, although it was more boggling at the activities at hand than participating, hehe).

But I don't see the appeal of yaoi/slash, at all. Doesn't turn my crank, and I don't see the point of ever joining a game where the soul purpose is to do the buttsex. S'why I don't join them. (And if that's why you were declined, er, yeah. If it wasn't a strictly yaoi game, though, that's just seven levels of dumb on the part of whoever approves folks.)

I do get sick of hearing about them on every advertising site I come across, and frequently wonder why it holds such an attraction for people, but. I guess it's just personal preference, or something?

I'm a bi girl and I do not want to see two dudes going at it. Or really, two chicks going at it. I've RP'd a gay guy before, or two, or whatever, but that's not my predominate character choice either.

I do not get why girls want to RP two guys butt sexing, I can't understand the appeal. Then again, don't really get the appeal of cyber, anyhow.

Dunno what to tell you hon. Sorry everyone's taken this so... uh... dramatically. You asked what the appeal was, you didn't say they were stupid for playing it. Too bad only a few responding seemed to have gotten that.

...I'll prolly get flamed for that one, too. Enjoy the 80+ spam mails in your inbox. ;>

You have no clue how much I wanted to use my fanwank icon for this. But I didn't and opted for my sexy pirate.

I'm a gay guy, but I'll play all sorts of characters of every sexuality, simply because I can.

Most people I've come across, however, are generally into playing wanky uke girly-boys (Thank god, I've found a handful who DON'T) against Manly Macho types. It's ridonkulous.

I have tried having a purely straight RP go for a while, and when that turned into nothing but my character going "yeah, this chick is crazy, nevermind" I gave up on it, because I have been rooting around in a bad batch of roleplayers for a while.

Personally, I've found that some of the best players I know play slash, but aren't afraid to go outside that 'norm' (odd to be saying that when society is arse backwards from roleplaying) and play hetero, or bi characters. My long-term 1-on-1 player and I have several characters of all sexualities, from gay, to bi, to straight, and even have a couple of prude non-sexual types.

But yep, I'm raising my hand as "Gay guy who doesn't care either way". I'm glad that girls like playing boys who like boys. Thanks for that, ladies, but don't forget, there's other colors in the rainbow or some stupid overused cliche like that.

Oh, and to just toss in my last two cents, STOP FREAKING PLAYING GIRLY MEN UKES GODDAMN WHERE'S A SWITCH WHEN I NEED ONE D:
