Dictionary of RP terms
Inspired by the post [info]aminaofzaria made.

We need a dictionary of RP terms. Because none of us know the meaning of every term, that means a group effort. So here it is, folks. I'll start off with the terms I know, and you guys add terms I missed and/or don't know. If you find one of my definitions lacking, feel free to write your own definition. If any of you know of a term you don't know the meaning of, ask for someone to define it.

THE DICTIONARY OF RP TERMS

*d* - A system of dice notation, where the number before the d is the number of dice, and the number after the d is how many sides, so 5d20 becomes 5 twenty sided dice. ie: 3d10, 5d6, 1d4. (Added by [info]zonr_0.)

AD&D - Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, a modified versions of D&D with different rules. (Added by [info]zonr_0.)

Alignment - A set of moral codes (Good, Evil, Neutral, for example), and ethical (Law, Chaos, Neutral) that is a guideline of how a character is supposed to act. Some tabletop classes such as Bards, Monks, and Paladins have Alignment restrictions that makes it important to stay within that alignment. (Added by [info]robindaybird.)

It's usually done for individual plotlines that would take up too much time during an actual play session or are boring/embarrassing to the other players. The term comes from the type of notebooks used by the early roleplayers for this purpose. (Added by [info]skjam.)

Breederville - When one couple after another starts reproducing. Like, A gets pregnant, then B, then C, then D, cue domino effect. Also known as "Wave O' Babies." (Added by [info]sarajayechan.)

Drizzt - (1) A Chaotic Good Drow Ranger created by R.A Salvatore that is considered a Gary Stu by non-fans. (2) A good-aligned character from a race that is traditionally evil with no discernable explanation, and most often specifically referring to another good drow. (Added by [info]robindaybird.)

Emo - Short for 'emotional' or in reference to Emo music, the term "emo" has also been used in recent years on the Internet as a form of insult, especially towards those who appear emotionally unstable online, or those who rant about issues in their lives to people in public forums or chat rooms. Phrases such as "don't cry emo kid" are used frequently as a quick brush-off in this context. As this type of slang term, the term "emo" is very loose, and is applied very liberally to differing situations. (Thanks again, Wikipedia.)

Emote - A command used to convey the action of a character. (Added by [info]aminaofzaria.)

(Added by [info]robindaybird.)

Lawful Stupid - Usually referring to Lawful Good - speificly Paladins, whose idea of 'being good and lawful' involves highly stupid acts such as charging an adult evil dragon by his lonesome, or immediately try to kill the Party's Rogue/Thief on the spot. (Added by [info]robindaybird.)

Marty Stu - A male form of the Mary Sue. See definition for Mary Sue.

Mary Sue - There are too many forms and variations to name, and whole articles have been written on the Mary Sue, but it can generally be boiled down to someone who is too good to be true. Too many bonuses/abilities/special characteristics, most of which are designed to draw attention to the character, with no balancing factors.

Examples include random kingdom guards, random villagers and shop-keepers, animals that human and animal characters hunt, etc. (Second definition courtesy [info]wolfwonderess.)

NJC - Non-Joined Character. NJCs differ from NPCs in that they're characters that, like a real joined character, are created and played by a specific player. In short, they're like secondary characters in a novel—not a main character, so thus not important enough to join, but there to complement or complicate the plot. They're also sometimes know as "Temporary Characters", which are characters created temporarily just to serve a specific purpose in a plot before being discarded...which thus makes them not important enough to join. Of course, sometimes, NJCs evolve into actual joined characters... (Added by [info]wolfwonderess.)

Great list, by the way! Very nice!

Also, another to add: PBeM: Play By e-Mail. Yet another RPing arena.

Wank is extra-game drama. OOC drama stemming from the game.

It's what this community engenders, honestly.

O.O I always thought wank referred to excessively poking at something, not letting something go, etc. - in brief, an unending, fruitless exercise in pettiness.

I also know it to mean RPing with yourself, writing scenes and conversations between your own chars without interaction. Very bad form.

Mun is also an abbreviation for "Member under name," a term that was very popular in the chatroom games on AOL.

I have so many other terms and definitions it's not funny. >_>;;

I'll toss up a couple that I know from PBeMs, though I assume they're not exclusive:

JP (Joint Post) - A section of RP written in backchannels between two or more players, and completed before being publically posted. Useful in games with post length minimums to avoid overly-padded conversations or scenes that drag on forever. Also for playing scenes in which interruptions from other characters are either impossible or unwelcome.

And on that note:

Backchannel: The practice of chatting and plotting in private e-mail or IM, instead of in a game's open forum. As in: "don't worry, he didn't godmode me. I gave my consent in the backchannel."

Bluebooking: Mostly for face-to-face games, "off-screen" roleplaying accomplished in writing between one player and the GM/mod. It's usually done for individual plotlines that would take up too much time during an actual play session or are boring/embarrassing to the other players. The term comes from the type of notebooks used by the early roleplayers for this purpose.

"Godmode" is also used for a player who writes all their actions as if they succeed, even if they don't involve other players.

For the definition of godmoding...I always considered characters ALWAYS having to get their way/win/get away with whatever they want come hell or high water a form of godmoding as well. ^^; Or is there another definition for that?

*jokes* Overblown sense of entitlement?

Anway, I thought that was covered under the "writes all their actions as if they succeed" clause.

Pup, Charrie, Pet, Characters - terms for characters

TRU WUV - mocking term for badly played romance, or for characters who are only taken for purposes of 'Shipping, despite circumstances.

Gloom Cookie/Angst Bunnies - Characters whose sole purpose is to angst, whine, and generally be miserable. Opposite of Fluffybunnies

And generally, I feel Powergamers imply more of someone taking OOC Knowledge IC or otherwise use knowledge the character does not know, while a Godmoder is Invincible and tweaks out game rules.

*goes to Wikipedia and reads definition of powergaming* You're right, they seem to be more closely related to twinks than godmoders, but it's still related to both. However, it doesn't say anything about using OOC knowledge IC. That's metagaming.

MUCK- Multi User Character Kingdom

Trust me, it isn't the best code base to run a RP game in, but it works. MUSH and MUX work much better

Oh, you can add this if you want also, MUX- Like MUSH, just a step up and a blend of existing MUSH flavors.

My game actually uses a different definition of NPC, and we also have another: NJC.

NPC
Non-Player Character. What that means is that it's a character(s) that is not joined and that it belongs to no one; anyone can play it. Examples include random kingdom guards, random villagers and shop-keepers, animals that human and animal characters hunt, etc.

NJC
Non-Joined Character.

Terms I thought might be appropriate for bad pregnancy plots:

Wave o' Babies! or Breederville: When one couple after another starts reproducing. Like, A gets pregnant, then B, then C, then D, cue domino effect.

Baby-rabies: When a character gets pregnant, suddenly they can't talk about anything else but morning sickness, swollen body parts, wacky cravings, then after the kid's born all they can talk about is the kid and the JOY of motherhood.

(fill in term here because I suck and can't come up with one): When pregnancy and babies are brought in for the sake of melodrama or wackiness.

social mu*: a mu* used mostly for socialization.

powerpose: using a pose to force an action on another character
emote: see pose.
mob: a Mobile OBject. On MUDs, it is an NPC, usually there to be killed for experience.

ONS: one night stand. see tinyplot
tiny plot: a short plot that doesn't have far-reaching story effects.
story arc: an extended, free-form storyline that can have far-reaching effects on the game.
sphere: an area of game oversight that an admin is responsible. In WoD MU*s, there's often a "vampire sphere" or a "garou sphere", etc.

What about retcon? IIRC, it's short for retroactive continuity and refers to OOC backtracking and erasing plots from the IC continuity as if they had never happened.

OTP is sometimes used more loosely to mean simply a person's favorite pairing, though they may enjoy others.
Crack: Intentionally humorous or parody in nature.
As stupid as I think it is--MPG or MPREG: Male pregnancy.
Real Person Characters: Characters based on real persons, such as high profile celebrities, actors, musicians and athletes. An off-shoot of Real Person fan fiction.
Stalker: A player who fixates on another player to an excessive amount, demanding endless amounts of attention\approval\interaction with the object of their fixation, and who may become jealous and\or resort to threats, bullying, etc. to try to get the attention they want. Intensely creepy.

n00b: A newbie that is stubborn, and refuses to play by the rules, and refuses to learn.

Sockpuppet: Fake accounts created by one person, usually in the context to pretend the fake accounts are different people to argue for the Sockpuppet maker's cause.

Buttsexs!: Mocking term for badly done male/male relationships and cybering, which involves any and/or all of the following: Instantly wanting into anothers pants, persistently chasing after an uninterested party, and flowery, badly written sex scene that usually uses no luberication, or inappropriate ones and not suffering the consquences. Also refers to players who is obsessed with Butt-sex.

Ms. Fixit: A Character that, no matter what the situation, can fix any and all ailments affecting another character, including and up to cancer, broken hearts, astigmaism hemophilia, and death. And usually they try to do so without the 'hurt' character's permission.

The Jerk: A player that has characters whose sole and only person is to annoy, agitated, and even anger other characters and/or players. They also don't like the rule of ICA=ICC

Chaotic Stupid: Players that uses an Alignment (Chaotic Good, Neutral, and Evil) of Chaotic has an excuse to commit random, nonsensical acts that fly in the face of Gameworld logic. For example, a character that stabs a King in full view of the court after recieving their reward.

Lawful Stupid: Usually referring to Lawful Good - speificly Paladins, whose idea of 'being good and lawful' involves highly stupid acts such as charging an adult evil dragon by his lonesome, or immediately try to kill the Party's Rogue/Thief on the spot.

Lawful Anal: Close cousin to Lawful Stupid, they are smart enough not to send their character to early death, but they are overbearing, and self-righteous, in extreme cases, they declare their god the only true god, and generally harrass other party members to act EXACTLY in his moral code.

"Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies": Refers to a Something Positive strip, and is a general term uttered by GM, Wizards, Mods, STs, and Gods/Deities in frustration when dealing with uncooperative, and generally rude players.

Drizzt: a. A Chaotic Good Drow Ranger created by R.A Salvatore that is considered a Gary-Stu by non-fans. b. A good-aligned character from a race that is traditionally evil with no discernable explanation, and most often speificly referring to another good drow.

Alignment: A Set of Moral codes (Good, Evil, Neutral, for example), and Ethical (Law, Chaos, Neutral) that is a guideline of how a character is supposed to act. Some Tabletop classes such as Bards, Monks, and Paladins have Alignment restrictions that makes it important to stay within that alignment.

IHB-Innocent Human Bystanders. This isn't as popular a term, but I do tend to use it at times. It stands for NPCs who are not important. It's used when setting up a scene for players: "Okay, the NPC you're supposed to find is by the bar, there are thirty or so presumed IHBs and a couple of probable mooks." Its short hand for people that your players know they can't break the Masquerade/Veil/shoot/whatever around.

fade-to-black: (or FtB) when a scene is ended even though the IC action is presumed to continue. Often used when characters are about to have sex, though it can be used for other reasons.

Timewarped: a scene that takes place in the future or the past.

freeze/frozen: when a scene is paused, even though the rest of the game's timeline keeps progressing.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

TS, or TinySex. Derived from the same vein as TP or TinyPlot, this is a MU*ing term that can refer to RP rated NC-17 for sexual content in general, but is usually used in a derogatory context, to refer to RP that is actually thinly-disguised cybersex.

TS is often linked with people posing in the second person (Bob takes your hand and pulls you in close against his hard and throbbing body) which definitely increases the friction between the pro- and anti-second person camps.
