Bacon Ray - Colonel Fusion (live in Tallahassee)

If I was the only person in that room who got the Donovan joke, it was still well played, Merlin.

The only video I was able to take at the show...

It's an AVI file which i'm not familiar with yet (still reading directions on my new camera), but friend that has been kind enough to host this for a while says he can alter it for Windows Media Player if necessary. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

For those of you that can't view...It's Merlin as Bill Cosby describing his "Magic Juan Experience."

I imagine most of the folks here saw this on my regular LJ, but here's a few photos I took in Tallahassee from before during, and after the big show.

I'll try to work up a more substantial entry, but the photos show the fun pretty well. You can also watch Flickr's "Bacon Ray" tag for other folks' pictures.

You shoulda been there, man!

EDIT: Also: I apologize if I talked anyone's ear off. I have a habit of chattering a bit.

I have confirmation that the one and only Merlin Mann is in Tallahassee as I type this. I am beside myself with excitement for the first full-band rehearsal tonight!

Rehearsal
Originally uploaded by hotdogsladies.

Six days until the show, and things are going pretty well.

I've learned that all the jangly pop songs are easy to remember, been reminded what a genius Mike Coleman is, and learned how brutally hard "Col. Fusion" is on a left ring finger that hasn't tried to do series of fast prog rock pull-offs in over five years. I blame Al DiMeola.

I'm so amped for this, including the East Coast return of "ubiquitous name tags."

Thick Slab o' Bacon [30 Mar 2005|09:00am]

brence
Last night was our longest and best rehearsal yet. At times we all felt like we were transported back in time by the ROCK. Bruce brought his old drum kit out and sounded amazing. We had two microphones set up for the first time, so Mike and I are getting back into the swing of things vocally as well. Our set seems to be flowing pretty well too. We're now at the point of starting to hammer out some of the logistical things we need to deal with- pedals, amps, who gets which guitar, etc.

Next week is gonna be a super busy one for the Bacon boys.

Monday: rehearsal, then off to V89 to chat on "Hootenanny"
Tuesday: off- Merlin arrives (time?)
Wednesday: first full-band rehearsal
Thursday: Brent soundchecks with Merge-ador (90's indie rock with Matt and Mike C. and Ryan Sterritt); Bacon Ray full-band rehearsal; Merge-ador show at Club Downunder
Friday: tentatively taking partial or full day off from work; rehearsal in early afternoon if possible. Mike leaves town that evening for David Sedaris show in Jax.
Saturday: hope to not have to rehearse today, but who knows?

Eat your Wheaties!

[ music | Blonde on Blonde by Bobby Dylan,LCD Soundsystem ]

We're hooking up again for another practice tonight. The set list seems to be taking clearer shape and barring any on stage tragedies (fingers crossed) we should be good to go without having to cut any tunes. We do not want to wear out our welcome and we are after all opening for a fine, fine headliner.
I am surprised at how well things have sounded thus far.A few songs have been utter clamfests but are now taking shape.Brent and I have been wondering..."Why didn;t we try playing together sooner?". It's been quite joyous and even if we blow big greasy chunks of indie rock turdage, it will still have been worth the effort.I have a bad cold and its sucks major ass.

For those of you who haven't seen it, check out the Little Quill Wrens promo film immediately. It's fantastic, and makes me extremely excited to be opening a show for them.

Also, I just read this entry from a couple of years ago. Funny!

Mike, Bruce, Jason and I will be getting together at the ol' warehouse tonight for practice number two. I guess from here on out we'll tentatively shoot for Tuesdays: March 8, March 15, March 22, March 29, April 5, then some more intensive rehearsals when Merlin arrives.

WTF are the words to that last bit in "Phillip Glassbottom-Boat?" That ol' prog magic knocks me down, but I can't decipher a single word.

Much Thanks,

[ music | The Bacon...I'm a-learnin' it! ]

We got together last night for out first practice. It was the first time we had all played together in 5 and a half years. It was kind of weird.Everybody pretty much remembered their parts. We took a cd of all the material and had it there to peruse if we needed it.Jason showed up later on and we started knocking about some songs we hadn't played in a LONG LONG TIME.We hung out, drank some brews and spoke of Merlin. We all wish he was here but he will be fairly soon.It was kind of emotional for lack of a better term. This was also the first time that Jason and Brent got to play together. The whole deal was fairly seamless for a first practice and wasn't nearly as horrible sounding as I thought it might be!Play doh guitar was in effect.Brent got some photos too.We were out there for 3:30 hours. The Beard ruled the scene.Word.

[ music | “Crestfallen” by Pernice Brothers from Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening [Live] ]

FWIW, friends, Adam tells me that—provided both bands approve—videotaping is totally okay, without charge. W00t.

On a related note: if you are an out-of-towner planning to come to Tallahassee, let me know as soon as you can. I might be able to set aside some list spots. The Downunder doesn’t sell advance tickets (this is primarily a free student gig), but we have nice friends who might be able to help us if we are early early, so speak up soon!

Apply within or via email.

[ music | “Metal Magician” by Bacon Ray from The Golden Master ]

Today I am officially all about a minor Canard masterwork, “Metal Magician.”

http://junk.merlinmann.com/08 Metal Magician.mp3

Lacking the class of a suave pervert,
And the cancelled check, and the spring reverb,
Gonna make you pay out the face.

I can’t control it—the terrible addiction.
Why can’t you hold it? Give it some attention.

Not right for the April show, but I forgot how fun this song is. The guitar parts are asinine, in the best possible way.
