My name is Lana and I live in Eastern Washington. I started this community because I thought it would be fun to chronicle my sightings and overall bird experience here. It's something I enjoy, thoroughly, and some of my friends and their friends have joined and share. One of my friends

lonewolf2 got the feather-brained idea (just kidding Malcolm!) to see if we could get placed on

lj_spotlight. I basically decided that since it was his idea, I'd put him up to the task, and I made him a co-maintainer of the community. And he did get us spotlighted! We've gone from 8 members to almost 300 in just a few days (as of March 31).

I don't want to make this a rigid ruled community... the point is to enjoy birds. And just so you know: "Backyard" can be anywhere you happen to find birds! :) Please, place any more than one photo under a cut. Here is the "how to" http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=75. The top uncut photo size should be reasonable, meaning that no one looking at their friend page should have to scroll left, right, up, nor down to see the entire photo. Those photos under the cut, though, are up to the poster. This is a photo/story bird community, so under the cut you should enjoy yourself and make the photos big if you want to show off some details of the birds, etc. :) Have fun! <--- Main rule. :D

I also asked how long everyone's been bird watching. What I found was wonderful! There is about split down the middle from novice to avid and experienced! So if you're new to bird watching, there are plenty of pros around to help you out. This can be particularly helpful with bird identifications.

The above photo was taken in my backyard this winter. The Northern Flicker seems to be at the door of the church, bowed and worshiping his creator. :) Below are photos I've decided to showcase from you. These photos will change periodically, and I may decide to bring some back that have been already showcased. There are so many wonderful photos.
