Okay, update. New writer zara2148 with the drabble Picking Up the Pieces which briefly explores Doc's thoughts before he tapes Marty's letter back together, and The Bunyip with Back to the future crossover, where Doc realises that there's something weird about him - he's not growing older, and his past seems to be a fabrication. It's yet to be known just what fandom it's crossover-ing with.

From bttf4444 are three short stories about Marty's birthday dedicated to EmmettMcFly55, where Marty celebrates his birthday in different circumstances with different people: My Son and Me, My Father, My Brother, and My Buddy, and The Day Everything Was Bright. She has also written The Dawning of a New Age, as Marty and Doc spend some time together before the teen's eighteenth birthday.

EmmettMcFly55 proposes a world in which the intelligence levels of Doc and Marty are switched, and in this scenario rewrites the first BTTF film in Marty's Great Experiment.

I realised I had been missing fics rated above T from fanfiction.net, so checking those out I uncovered several more fics: the Doc/Marty fic Typical Hormone Fever by Kurayumei, taking place in the universe of the original Part 2 'Paradox' script. From bttfimjfifan is another Bill Nye the Science Guy crossover slash fic entitled Bill s worst day ever, once again slashing Doc with Bill Nye the Science Guy. Lastly, a Biff/Marty fic by jojosephs in Sometimes.

Doctor Emmett Brown, Time Monster
Each one of the Back to the Future movies spins a tale of a mad libertarian protagonist who uses the power of time travel under false pretenses to help only himself and his closest friends who happen to be photogenic, naïve minors.

This directory is now two years old; I have no idea where the time went. :\

Fics! Marty discovers the horrors of transuniverse fan fiction in new writer God-Time-Fate-Whatever's fic Doc I don't think I like slash; and Breeker Dude invades the fandom with the seriously weird and slightly disturbing fic Dirk Hardbones Goes Back to the Future. Sodomy, serial killings and cannibalism on a universe at the brink of explosion.

New writer Indiana McFly Jr. brings a crossover, Indiana Jones to the Future, which crosses over BTTF and, er, Indiana Jones, as well as the pseudo-sequel fic Back to the Future Part IV, which is basically the first movie transplanted into 2015 with Marty Jr. as the protagonist trying to save his existence. From chrisfardell is the filler fic I Can Play Guitar, about that short gap between Marty crushing Marvin's hand and agreeing to play in his place.

The Reluctant Time Traveller by new writer The Submarauder is an AU fic with a girl named Rebecca Jameson in the Marty role. George McFly deals with the pressures of overcoming his fear of rejection and sharing his writing with the world in Taking the Plunge by Radioactive Nerd.

Fandom still in a relative slump. Five additions; new writer, Kurayumei, brings Manchu Wok, an entertaining fic about Doc's first venture into the horrific unknown that is a Chinese restaurant. Two new stories from bttf4444 - Secrets Of Our Parents, where the next generation of McFlys go back to 1987; and When Doc Was A Kid, where Marty and the Brown kids meet a young Emmett. From a long-absent writer is Me with a Somewhere In Time crossover entitled Time Travel isn't for Amateurs; and lastly, an untitled poem summarising the events of the first film - Untitled Poem by WibSkelDS9.

...I am considering shifting this site onto its own paid domain; don't know if it'll be worth it though. :\

Fairly slim pickings for March; we have three new short stories by bttf4444, all from a series entitled 'Hill Valley Trials' - No More Daddy, where a young Marty hears the news of his father's murder; Farewell To My Friend, where Doc says goodbye to Marty as the latter leaves for Switzerland; and Fearful Friday, Doc's thoughts a year after George's death.

From WibSkelDS9 is Storm, where a nighttime thunderstorm leads to some father-son bonding for George and young Marty. Lastly, a crossover slash fic from bttfimjfifan, Science and Love, where Doc and Bill Nye the Science Guy get together.

You may have read my stories in the past - I'm WibSkelDS9! I finally got around to getting an LJ account and I'd thought I'd share my latest with you!

Title: Storm
Rating: PG
Summary: A lightning storm can bring father and son together in the most unexpected ways.
Word Count: 674
Genre: Family/General
Disclaimer: I don't own Marty or his dad or Back to the Future in any way. That honor goes to Bob Zemeckis and Universal. Lucky sods.
Author's Note: Written in two different times - meaning I started writing this a while ago but didn't get around to finishing it till now, so blame any inconsistencies on that. Partially inspired by the wonderful Martin Isaac stories. Many thanks to bttf4444 for being so supportive.

1st March 2009

Not many new fics this month. For those following the 'I'll Stop the World' series by My Reality is Fiction, she has got two more related one-shot fics up: The Letter, Broken, and the sequel proper, Every Breath You Take which follows the travellers to 2015.

bttf4444 has written Rock Star Daddy, where Marty Sr. takes a break from his career to spend some time with young Marty Jr. and Marlene; My Injured Soul Mate, where Jennifer worries about Marty after he gets knocked down; The Times Are Changing, the thoughts of Verne Brown on the cusp of adulthood; and What Is and What Should Never Be, where a seemingly simple trip back in time results in Hill Valley of the 1980s becoming a ghost town. bttf4444 has meanwhile completed her fic 'The Girl of My Old Home'.

Radioactive Nerd has finished 'Coraline BTTF Style' and brings a short one-shot fic, Babysitting the Boys, about what would happen if she babysat Jules and Verne.

The singular new writer this month - gonzo117 - debuts with a completed fic entitled Unfinished Business that takes off from a slightly different end of the trilogy - some things were changed by Marty and Doc's presence in 1885, and Marty's existence is endangered once again.

This month, Radioactive Nerd finishes off her two Animated Series fic seasons with Family History, where a school project gives the Brown kids an opportunity to learn about their roots, and The Last Episode, where a simple time trip results in Doc's life hanging by a thread. Also by her are The Fire, about the time the Brown mansion burnt down; Baby Stories - a collection of short fics on various BTTF characters as young kids; Rubik's Revolution! where Doc, Marty and Jennifer play a game; and the BTTF adaptation of the Neil Gaiman short story, Coraline BTTF Style, where Verne discovers another world via his basement that at first seems too good to be true...

From bttf4444 we have two short stories: Reaching Out to Daddy, where a teenage Lorraine feels that her father doesn't love her, and George McFly For Class President, where George faces off against one of the most popular kids in school for the coveted position. Then there's the crossover The Glorious Christmas of Narnia, which has a trip through time result in the travellers ending up in Narnia instead. The fic crosses over the Chronicles of Narnia series, Peter Pan, Labyrinth, The Wizard of Oz and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. bttf4444 then teams up with EmmettMcFly55 for the fic The Great Chase, which sees Doc and Marty chase a Tannen through time after he steals both Jennifer and the time machine.

In the slash area, two Doc / Marty fics this month: in Make a break, Doc by bttfimjfifan, Marty decides that Doc is working too hard and needs a break; and History Repeats by usedusername has a time-stranded Marty live through the thirty years between 1955 and 1985, waiting with Doc for that moment when things will finally return to normal.

New writer My Reality is Fiction brings a set of related stories; the main one being I'll Stop the World and Melt With You, where Doc's daughter Amelia finds herself stuck in 1955 with Marty. The author assures us that she is not a Mary Sue, and reviewers appear to agree. In association with that are the one-shot fics Things Revealed, Dropping Hints and Lorraine's Stand.

On the other hand, other new writer Allis0nW0nd3rland says that her two OCs in Path Less Traveled are Mary Sues, but says that they are well-developed (*ahem*) ones in a good story. Lastly, we have the third new writer of 2009, sunshinedays123, with How My Life Changed Within A Week, essentially a novelised version of the first movie with occasional added details and scenes.

And that's it.

1st January 2009

Happy New Year! We've just passed the 1000 barrier: 1009 fics at last count, and growing.

From Radioactive Nerd there's another bunch of TAS fics: An Errand in Alexandria, where the time travellers pay a visit to the Library of Alexandria before it was destroyed; Suspicion, where the Brown's next-door scientist neighbour decides to figure out just what secret the Brown family is hiding; Adventure in the Future, where Marty goes off to the year 3000 with Verne in search of inspiration for a science fiction story he needs to write; and Trick or Treating in Salem, a Halloween fic where the Brown kids and Marty decide to see how All Hallows Eve was traditionally celebrated, only to end up in trouble. Also by her are the fics Accomplishment, where young Doc learns to ride a bicycle, and the Teen Wolf -inspired fic Surfin' USA, which has Marty - and Doc - try out van-surfing stunts in Hill Valley.

PaperShredder is now PaperShredder15 and brings A wierd Christmas Encounter, where Doc, Marty and Seamus inexplicably end up in the North Pole. EmmettMcFly55 has written a complete sequel script, Back to the Future Part IV. Then there's Lights by scifitwin, Doc-POV Christmas fic about Santa Claus and other beliefs.

Two new writers both debut with mild slash fics: Differences - Marty's reflections on his new life and new father - by slyprentice, and Fact - Marty's ponderings on the Doc - by barelytruthful.

Nine new fics from bttf4444 this month, mostly short stories: Two Weeks Later, taking place the titular length after the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance, where George and Lorraine have a chat; Turmoil of the Mind, a supplementary fic to EmmettMcFly55's Heaven Or Hell? fic; The Spirit of Christmas Lives On, where Clara realises that Christmas hasn't really changed that much in the future after all; Calvin's Family Values, where the importance that Calvin (Marty-A) places on family is mocked by his peers; Looking Forward, where he looks forward to his first full year in the new world; A Painful Affair and My Injured Half, two different takes of what happens when Marty gets knocked unconscious by Needles; Identity Crisis, where Calvin goes through an existential dilemma; and Not Quite Farewell to Youth, where he and Marty face their 18th birthday and passage into adulthood.

And yep, that's it.

TOTAL NUMBER OF NEW FICS IN 2008: 213

in response to the query, "Do you believe in Santa Claus?"

Santa Claus? Santa Claus?! A perfectly good Catholic saint with Germanic Pagan origins appropriated by the Coca-Cola company to sell more soda and used by modern parents as a carrot-and-stick superstition to celebrate a holiday that is, ultimately, built around nothing more than the observation of one of the apexes in the Earth's solar cycle?

One year I had Marty work out the calculations to make Santa Claus necessary--number of Christian houses visited, miles traveled, calories expended by flying reindeer...he didn't come to the same conclusion I would have, but it was a good exercise.

Anyway, we celebrated Hanukkah when I was growing up. But we didn't believe in Judah Maccabee either--the story of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil ran ideologically counter to what my father had wanted to move to America and change our name for, which was assimilation, the rejection of old traditions and and old, superstitious ways of thinking. He didn't want me exposed to that sort of thing as something to celebrate, something that made someone a hero.

I don't like smashing idols with hammers. An idol doesn't need to be smashed to be meaningless. It just needs to be proved wrong.

He'd tell me about the Sephirothic qualities instead, the ten qualities through which God manifests...well, we both looked for the highest knowledge we could find, that's one thing I get from him. For my father, it was religion. For me, it's physics.

I don't remember any of them except for Malkuth and Da'at. The beauty of the world, and knowledge of it.

He told me the lights were symbolic of tikkun olam, putting the world back together, recapturing the light that was lost at the beginning of creation. "We're bringing the light back tonight," he'd say, "and when all the candles are lit, the world will be back together again."

The more time happens, the more it rolls on, the more that light is lost. Entropy, the heat-death of the universe--when the universe ends, everything will be dark again. There's no way of slowing entropy, no way of lighting those candles again once they've burned out. The only thing we can do is go back ourselves--walk back, slowly, against the current.

So no, I don't believe in Santa Claus, and I never did--that's for the goyim. I still light the candles when Marty comes over on Christmas Day to show me his presents, and I tell him about as much of tikkun olam as I can remember.

I even let him light the candles. I think he's taking it to heart.

30th November 2008

Fairly slow month because people have been busy with NaNoWriMo, but all the same the fics now total at 988 - just 12 away from the thousand mark, which should probably be hit by the end on 2008.

Got the first new poetry fic in ages -> November 12, 1955 by Radioactive Nerd. In addition to his usual Animated Series fics, he's also got one non-TAS fic: Wii Would Like to Play, where Doc and Marty have fun with a Nintendo Wii they get from the future. For this month's TAS set he's written the double-feature When Scientists Collide - where Doc faces off with another scientist in a contest to prove who is better - and Jules' Birthday Crash, where Jules' attempt to please a girl results in unforeseen consequences; Education Issues, where Verne's school difficulties turn out to be due to dyscalculia; Mafia Madness, where the Brown kids and Marty head to 1926 to check out the gangster scene; Very Fortunate, when a trip back to the Great Depression causes Jules and Verne to better appreciate the lives they have; and lastly Just Say No, where Jules learns (with the help of a little trip to the future) the consequences of taking up a smoking habit.

Continuing the food theme, two fics from orangepencils short story series: the Part 3 filler Coming Back in Time for Scones which has the Browns leave on their first time travel trip as a family, and Apple of My Eye following shortly after that, where Marty realises how good it is to be back home again with Jennifer.

For bttf4444's NaNoWriMo this year, she has written a two-parter fic, the second of which - Back to His Youth - is up now, detailing the events that ensue when Marty Jr goes back in time to when his father was his age. Meanwhile, from AnonymooseAu there's the drabble November, and the one-shot fic Worth a Thousand Words, where a short trip to the future doesn't go as smoothly as expected.

November brings two new writers with one fic each - Untitled BTTF story by Guitar831, about an original character named Kyle Newman who replaces (the unsuspecting and strangely non-existent) Marty as Doc's friend and fellow time traveller. Then there's Second Kid by Wonder1234, which currently involves Marty Jr and Marlene in school in 2015 just before a school assignment for all of Hill Valley High to re-enact the 50s for a week; the mysterious "Matt Brown" of the summary is nowhere in sight.

And that's it for now. Happy belated Thanksgiving to all in the US. I still think it unfair that you actually get a holiday that revolves largely around the eating of turkey.

2nd November 2008

The new and improved search engine on FanFictionNet apparently now turns up a whole lot of new fics for 'back to the future', which bttf4444 informed me about. This means a whole chunk of new fics - total of 46 added to the directory this month, 11 of which are crossovers.

Starting with the slash for once, three Doc / Marty fics. First there are Joining of the Minds and Falling Through a Rift in TIme by usedusername, the first non-untitled fics by this author. In the first, Doc tests his mind-reading device on Marty and gets to read the teen's innermost thoughts; the second is an alternate extended take on BTTF2, where Marty and Doc, stranded in 1985-A, struggle with changing memories and increasingly forgotten relationships. The third fic is Back to the Future - A Story About Love, Sex and Time Travel (fic is split into four parts accessible from the LJ slash comm), bttfimjfifan's rewriting of the entire trilogy in a slash context.

From Radioactive Nerd there's the last of the Season 3 Animated Series fics, Marty's Graduation, when Doc accidentally forgets to be there for one of the most important events in his best friend's life; a non-TAS fic about young Doc, Missing, and the first of the Season 4 fics, Back to the School, where Jules and Verne start their new school years in the tenth and fifth grade respectively. There's also a deleted scene from that fic.

After ages of inactivity, orangepencils has made a return with a nice set of food-themed vignettes entitled Never Letting You Go: Friendship as Long as Time... and Soup, Tea Makes it Better, Muffins for Your Thoughts, Potatoes Make You me and Baby and Coffee Shop. The series is mostly Doc centered, with the exception of Coffee Shop.

For this year's NaNoWriMo, EmmettMcFly55 is writing The Junction Point Part One, a revisting of his script fic of the same title which appears to have been deleted. He's also written Waiting For Lightning, a short fic about Doc's thoughts while Marty was down on the ground with the Almanac. New writer King Rat arrives with Revolutionary, which is currently too short for me to figure out what it's about but apparently it has something to do with the Revolutionary War.

AnonymooseAu has another lot of Flash 88 fics, all accessible from this page: Garage, Pepsi, Spring, Science Fiction, Dogs, Milkshake, Parents, Cemetery, DInner, Density, Why? Life, and Smoking. From bttf4444: Back to My Youth when Marty McFly Snr wishes to relieve his days as a teenager; Dazed of My Youth in which five characters are de-aged ten years by one of Doc's inventions; two trilogy hole-fillers, Memento of the Future and Letter of Crisis, both dealing with the letter that Marty wrote to Doc. Also by her is the Halloween fic Cowboys and Fairy Princesses, and The Family Man, where Marty McFly Snr has meals with his children; and lastly Some Time, Same Place, about what happens when a log cabin is accidentally made into a portal between two years.

Whole lot of crossovers because of the new search engine, though some were posted in the BTTF section. Starting off is the joint fic When Two World's Collide by ButterflyMercury and her friend Jen: a crossover with Edward Scissorhands where Ed comes to live with Doc and Marty and has to learn to survive in Hill Valley. Kick Back to the Future is a possibly-gay or maybe secretly-straight Karate Kid crossover by Kay Illuser Spring that is kind of strange. From the sitcomsonline boards there's a Happy Days crossover by Bea - Back to Milwaukee, and a Thunderbirds crossover by Race's Girl entitled Back to Tracy Island.

Back on FFN, Discworld crossover! just as creatively named Back to the Discworld, by reaperofthewinds. And with M*A*S*H, Back to the Future Part 4077 by XxSparkyxX. Just when you thought you'd seen it all, there's also a Kim Possible crossover by yellowmattercustard, It's About Time, Dr Drakken; a Treasure Planet crossover - Marital Advice When Worlds Collide by Tmyres77, a Hey Arnold crossover and Totally Spies crossover: Back To The Future Part IV and Forward to the Past, both by Farhan Tre'. Finally, another script fic - Running Out of Time by Paratech Industries, a crossover with (Real/Extreme) Ghostbusters.

That's it for now, and good luck to everyone doing NaNoWriMo this year.

30th September 2008

The database is screwed up. Stuff doesn't tally for some reason, and I don't have the time to figure out where the errors are. Ignoring that...

14 new drabbles from AnonymooseAu: A Week, What? Saturday, Birth, Main Street, Too Much, Bribe, Cake, Brown, Escaping, Summer, Manure, Crazy Drunk and Kick Me, all available from her LJ. Two drabbles from Flaming Trails - a crossover with Girl Genius, Spring, and a Clue crossover, Purple.

From the only new writer this month, snfan, we have Reality?, in which Marty finally wakes up to find himself home. Radioactive Nerd has another TAS fic, Anybody Seen Our Dog?, in which Einstein runs away one day.

From bttf4444 there are the fics No Time To Sleep, where Marty's twin suffers from insomnia and the two of them end up talking about their lives; What Has Happened Will Be, involving Seamus McFly and a young Emmett Brown; and a fic I left out previously, The Real Me, where Marty reveals his time travelling secrets to his girlfriend Jennifer.

No slash this month.

30th August 2008

Getting this update up a little earlier than usual.

First off, people changed their pennames. George McFly Au is now AnonymooseAu, and IndiAnnaJones1234 is now MrsO'HaraHamiltonKennedyButler, which is a whole lot less fun to type. :( From her we have the new fics This is It, a 1985-A Lorraine POV fic about her thoughts prior to her marriage to Biff, and What Almost Happened on September 5, 1885, a hurt/comfort piece about what would have happened if Doc had been shot by Buford; i.e. what happened the first time Doc went back to the Old West. From AnonymooseAu is Ripped From the Headlines about Doc's side of the story and his discoveries upon first arrival in 1985-A. She also wrote a whole lot of drabbles88 fics that can be accessed here: Middles, CPR, Slackers, Back, How?, Alcohol, Gun, Wimp, History, Ends, Lost and Guitar.

From new writer alicelecter is Like lightning, where a teenage Jules falls in love with Marty's daughter, Roxanne. The second new writer for this month is lithrael, debuting with a Doc / Marty piece entitled Building Coincidence, that takes place in a desperate final moment before Marty goes back to the future.

bttf4444's fic Looking Up has been split into its separate stories for listing in the directory: Always Something To Invent, To Gain Some Courage, Become The Best Me, A Year Of Great Opportunities, Hope In A Hopeless World and Living Life To The Fullest. By her this month are four new fics: The Greatest Gift of All, where Marty-A (now named Calvin) enjoys his first Christmas in the 'regular' 1985; two additions to the 'Marty Wept' series, What Happened? - which takes place upon Marty's arrival in 1955, and I Don't Want To Die!, as Marty prepares to face Buford Tannen the next day. Then there is Pox Ponderings, where a young Marty comes down with the chicken pox.

There's the usual offering of Animated Series fics from Radioactive Nerd: Movie Mishap, where Doc and Jules go back to the 1950s to watch a movie, only to accidentally encounter someone else; and Responsibility, where Verne realises that it's not right thing to do to solve all your problems with time travel. From WibSkelDS9 is Workin' Hard and Hardly Workin', a short fic about Doc's daughter and their relationship through the years. Lastly, we have Marty's Spring Break by LittleMana, where a seemingly uneventful spring break suddenly leads to Marty being dragged off through time again by a very familiar traveller from his future.

**

(The database became strange ever since I switched to MSOffice 2007; the thing is actually just minimised near the bottom of the screen. Drag it up if you can't see it.)
