NAK-Beginning and I need a little help
Hello ;] I found this journal while I was about 30 weeks pregnant and have watched the community since. I would love to wear my daughter, who is now five weeks, but have had no luck choosing a wrap/sling/pouch.

So, please help me! I am 5'3 and 70 pounds heavier than my pre-pregnancy weight (160), so I'm quite chubby! I have DDD breast and a very short torso, if it matters. I'd like to find a way to comfortably wear my daughter, it is very important that I am able to nurse in whatever product I end up purchasing. Also, please take into account that it is about 100-108 degrees here, every day of summer! So I need something that I can shield her in, as well as cover her, and not worry about her overheating or getting super uncomfy.

sorry for errors, NAK!

edit: DD is 5 weeks

Easiest type of sling...
Hi everyone!
I didn't have a sling for my first baby, but I'm definitely getting one for #2... I'm gonna have a 2 year old and a newborn, and we walk/take the bus everywhere (no car), so it's a necessity! :) Anyhoo, I'm wondering what type of sling people find the easiest/quickest to use, if that makes sense. I guess the idea is to be able to pop baby in the sling, and still be able to get little girl into the stroller or be able to hold her hand. Right now, I'm thinking a ring sling would be good, being adjustable, but I'm totally new to all this, so I'm looking for a few opinions. Thanks :D

suggestions?
I need something I can use daily to wear my rather heavy three year old when walking for a couple of miles at a time or more that is still really cuddly and nurturing. The sling we have been using for forever is no longer working well, because the uneven weight distribution is doing unkind things to my back.

It needs to be as cuddly as possible (and ideally permit a front carry). He is being extra high need these days and really needing the extra nurturing, particularly as we are coming home from work, which involves using public transport and walking a fair distance at either end. I would also like to be able to get him in and out of it rapidly, so that we could easily sit on buses and subways en route.

I'm thinking an ergo would be best, but I'm wondering if folks with a wider range of experience with different carriers than I have other suggestions.

(It might be useful if I could also use it with the 13 month old baby I take care of during the day, but I figure almost anything that works for a three year old will also work for a sturdy one year old who has been walking since she was ten months old.)

What to get
I'm trying to decide between a maya sling or a sling ezee. I had surgery on my shoulder a while bck to have a tumor removed and sometimes things rubbing on my scar irritate it. I was thinking the padding on the sling ezee might be easier on this, but I dont know. The lady at our diaper store heavily pushes the maya.

What are your opinions.

BTW Ashley is 11 days old, and I'm hoping to get something before the 1st of August when we ill be going out of town for a family reunion. The reunion is going to be outside at a park for most of the day so I'm hoping to have the sling to carrier her.

ring sling or gypsymama?
So, I've been looking for a lightweight carrier and really either want to try a ringsling or wrap.  We currently have a Moby that we love.  Before I knew they were evil, I tried one of those SlingRiders and I really didn't like the shape or weight distribution.

Does this look like a comfortable ring sling? I still don't understand what you can do with the dangling tail besides throw it over your baby's head. Is there anything else you can do with it?  At what point does the child start to feel too heavy in these?

I've also been looking at the GypsyMama carriers.  There's a water wrap that looks pretty interesting and fun.  Does anyone own one or know what kind of frabric its made out of?  For the balibreeze wraps, is the feel really different than a Moby because it doesn't look like it stretches as much.

Thanks. :)

Mei Tai recommendations
We have a tiny carrier collection that includes an SBP ring sling the baby and I have never been comfortable with, my husband's Ergo, a black MTB we share, a full buckle tie Dream Carrier that is missing the snap that holds the shoulder straps behind my back, and a Beco I'd use more if I could figure out how to put it on quickly and comfortably.  So I have some obvious questions.

I'd like a new mei tai in another color for when I'm not wearing black. What is your favorite brand? Ideally I'd like this to work for my six month old and still work when he is a toddler. So far I'm searching the FSOT for Olives & Applesauce and Freehand, but I'd like hear about your well loved brands.

Is there a good Beco (4th gen) tutorial? I use it for a front carry and I can never adjust the straps once it is on for a comfortable fit and I can never place that back strap perfectly.

Thanks ladies!

Mei Tai vs. Moby vs. anything else?
I have a Moby D, which Little Bit has not outgrown yet (he's 4 months). But we're planning a trip to Disneyland sometime when he's 5 months or so, and he'll be very hot in it, especially since he'll have to be completely covered up to pretect him from the sun. We'll probably also take a stroller to give me some relief from wearing him ALL DAY around the park.

I don't sew, but my mother does, and I'm thinking of asking her to make him a Mei Tai. Would he be just as hot in that, or is there less fabric? Also, would it be strong enough? He's a pretty chunky baby (almost 15 pounds, he'll probably be much more by then), so I'm worried a homemade mei Tai wouldn't be able to hold him up. I don't want to spend huge amounts of money on a carrier without trying it out first, so things like babyhawk/Beco Butterfly etc. aren't an option

ETA: And Hubby just very emphatically informed me that "He'll be in the stroller". Argh! I LIKE wearing him. He likes being worn! What is everyone's problem?

ETA2: Apparently the problem is "You made me spend $60 on that Moby thing! He's not getting another carrier!"

I don't know if anyone remembers my prior post, but it was about putting my newborn in a mei tai. I gave it a shot, and he screamed like a banchee. It was really disappointing, but I don't think I'm going to give up. I do have good news, though. I decided, just for fun, to see if my 15-month-old would enjoy it even though he hated it when he was younger. He loved it. It made me really happy, especially since he's been needing more attention since Ethan's been born. And it works out great, since he's been wanting me to hold him all the time now.

For the younger one, Ethan, I kind of get the feeling that he would enjoy a sling more than the mei tai.

What is your favorite sling, and why?

I recently went hiking with my 10-month-old, using the Ergo, which is my favorite carrier. He's about 22 pounds, and he's getting really heavy for a front carry. The back carry is a lot more comfortable for me when I'm going to be walking for a while, but I can't keep a sunhat on him that way (he's very fair), or see if there's a mosquito landing on his face, etc.

I've seen structured backpack carriers with a sun canopy and a bug screen, and I'm thinking that for extended hiking or long walks, I might really like one of those. They look somewhat cooler for baby and parent, besides the sun and bug protection. If any of you have used this kind of carrier, I'd be really interested to learn how it compares to something like an Ergo or a mei tai in terms of comfort. Any particular models to recommend?

best first sling?

I perused all the tags and have gotten an idea for what brands/styles people generally seem to prefer, but I just wanted to double check before committing to a purchase:
I have a newborn and currently use a simple fleece pouch by "peanut shell" and i also have a Hotsling. Theyre both great and all, but I was hoping for something a bit more fashionable and also better for my back. (I just cant seem to get the perfect angle with these pouches)
It seems like lots of people like the Mei Tais, and the Beco butterfly carrier. I also like the look of the traditional woven slings, with or without a ring.
for a newborn and one that i can grow with and use for a long while to come----what would you experts reccomend for me most?

Help me decide....
I'm not usually an indecisive person, but I'm having a hard time picking a new baby carrier.

I currently own the SlingEzee (ring sling) and now that my 7mth old son is getting bigger & heavier, I want something that distributes his weight more evenly.

I was pretty set on a mei tai style carrier & in particular, I was looking at the Sugar Tai.

But I'm re-thinking the MT carrier now coz it's summer, I live in Houston and it's warm here at least 7 mths out of the year. And my son is already naturally warm-blooded, doesn't take much to make him sweat. So I'm thinking the MT style would just get way too warm for both of us.

When I carry him in the ring sling now, we do a hip carry & he seems to like that a lot. I plan on using the carrier for around the house (my husband has evening classes, so when I get home after work, it's just me & the babe as I try to feed the dog, feed myself, do stuff - y'know...) and when we're out & about on the town.

I'm considering the Beco Butterfly, but it seems like that's a front or back carry, can't do hip carry - is that right?

Which carrier would you recommend for me?

Thanks, mamas!

Carrier You Can Do Hip,Front, Back Besides Ergo?
Does anyone have any rec's for carriers you can do hip, front and back in besides the Ergo? I know you can't do hip with the Beco Butterfly. Thanks.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for responding. I got some good ideas for carrier that can do the back, front and hip carry. Thanks!

Hello! I'm new to the community. I'm due July 10th and looking for a new baby carrier but I'm not sure what I should get. I have a few Mei Tai's, a Baby Bjorn and a ring sling. I used all 3 with my almost 2 year old son. I didn't really get into wearing him until he was a few months old so the Mei Tai's were what I used the most. I never breastfed him while wearing him. I plan to wear my daughter A LOT and would like to be able to comfortably breastfeed her while wearing her as well. I'm thinking my ring sling would probably be good for that but I was never very comfortable with my son in it as I didn't feel like I could make it tight enough. Any recommendations? Also, if possible....directions on how to make them as opposed to by them would be much appreciated :o)

TIA

City/Subway Babywearing
Hey all--

So, I just found out that I am going to NYC (my old home) for a week, in a week! My little one, Penelope, is 9 months old, and perhaps 20 lbs. I wear her with a mei tai (a kozy) and a gypsymama wrap, but I do sometimes struggle with getting her in the wrap just right, or putting the mei tai on in a hurry. I'm trying to wrap my mind about how to struggle my way through the subways and all (some of the time I'll be with Penny on my own), and the thought of lugging a stroller seems so very unfun. Babywearing seems like it would be potentially much easier! But I'd want something very easy, something dependable and click and go.

So, what would be best, for ease of quick use, for my comfort, and Penelope's? An ergo? Something I haven't heard of?

Thanks in advance!

For some reason I seem to totally fail at baby wearing. I've tried the Maya wrap, Mei Tai, petite Moby and hotsling. What would you recommend for someone just under 100 pounds, 5'3 inches tall, narrow from shoulder to shoulder and needs something easy? I have 2.5 month old twins, one can hold his head up and the other one isn't even interested in trying to yet. My husband has an Ergo and can use it successfully with our boy baby but I haven't tried it yet. Anything that ties on like a Mei Tai or Moby seems to end up around my knees in about 15 minutes. I'm thinking of trying a beco butterfly. Any advice/suggestions would be really appreciated, the double stroller isn't always very convenient!

Plus size dad
Please spam me with recommendations for a big ol' dad. He has a chest measurement of 52" and wears a size XXXL shirt (and that barely fits). I was thinking a Kangaroo Korner pouch because they come in size XXXL.

We are first timers at this. I don't mind spending a bunch of money if I know it will work but I don't want to do that if I will more than likely have to return it.

I have a Freedom Sling, which is a bog-standard cotton sling, and my three-week old likes it okay. Unfortunately, it's kind of uncomfortable, and it also is a little loose along the 'rails', as they don't really tighten up at all.

I'm not really interested in a Hotsling type sling, he doesn't really like the cradle hold, he likes to snuggle into my chest.

Is there any type of sling that is more comfortable, maybe some padding on the shoulder? Also, is there any type which has like elasticised edges or something else to make it more secure?

Any links would be appreciated, thanks!

eta: We have a Moby type wrap already and he loves it, but I'd like a better sling because slings are handier for us at work.

Forward facing carrier?
We have a Beco Butterfly and a Beco 4th gen that we really like, but now that my girls are almost 5 months old, they like to look around and can't really do that well from the vantage point of staring at our chests.

Please recommend your favorite forward-facing carrier! I'm not into things that need to be tied, so easy is good.

Feeling the wrap love...
My son is 3 months old, and while I've been loving my Moby wrap, lately I can tell that he's begining to outgrow it. It's just too stretchy lately, and I have to keep adjusting it. Plus...wow does it get hot now that warmer weather is here.

My dream is to get a great German-style woven wrap. I salivate over the didys and storches I see. But are they too hot for warmer weather? I live in New England...where we're blessed with often frigid winters yet often insanely hot & humid summer heat waves. What about an ellaroo? Are those better for warmer weather?

*sigh* I want them all. But I can't. So spam me with what wraps work for you in hot weather.

edited to add photo!  =)
