Charles Dodgson
Since the community has Alice Liddell and Alice in Wonderland listed as interests and because some of the pics from when Polixeni Papapetrou reshot some of Carroll's images are posted here from time to time, I thought it would be fitting to post a few Charles Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll images. The pictures are from between 1856-1890. Hopefully some of you will enjoy them.

The last one startles me, yet I cannot stop looking at it.

Thank you for posting these! I've been meaning to search for them recently but forgot all about it.

Oh wow, I've seen the first few but certainly not the rest. Nine, ten, eleven, and the last one are particularly arresting.

Thanks for pictures.
And it would be good, however, to accompany pictures with some metainfo, at least a date the shot was made.

Спасибо за фотки.
А было бы не плохо, тем не менее, сопроводить их какой-нибудь метаинформацией, хотябы даты, когда они были сделаны.

The latent sexuality in some of the clothed pictures is amazing.

I had seen most of these before - I'm a huge Carroll fan! There were one or two that I had not seen before, though. What a lovely surprise. Thanks for posting!

yes i must agree with the other comment and say he definitely has an unhealthy interest with young girls.im pretty sure that showing flesh in those times would of been seen as pornographic, but with subject being young girls....thats really unhealthy!!!!

And this was considerably more acceptable back then than it is now. Look at collections of Victorian greetings cards etc, and you'll find similar naked images everywhere.

I get really tired of all this 'Carroll was a pervert' stuff. The charge seems obvious from our modern (or should I say current) point of view, but back then people had different sensibilities.

My name is Charles Dodgson. The famous Charles Dodgson, who took these photos, was the brother of my great-great grandfather. So I have a loose connection. But nonetheless, I have had nasty comments made to me about my relative.
My comment is that my grand uncle was a scientist and one of his time. It is easy to reinvent someone from a different time. Of course I would defend my ancestor. But I am also a scientist and have learnt evidence-based research. There is no evidence to suggest Charles Dodgson was anything but a researcher into the new technology of photography and a Victorian who celebrated the innocence and purity of children.

It's always a problem when we look at work from the late 19th and earlier 20th Centuries through a 21st Century lens, I think. One has to understand the context and the times. People talk of Carroll's photography as though it was something unusual. When photography was first developing as an art form, children were popular subjects, especially young girls. Seeing such as sexualized is a very recent development. To demonstrate just how recent a development this is, see the cover to Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy album. As we see, children representing innocence, with no sexual connotations, whatsoever, was still in place as late as the mid-1970s. We even have an Alice connection, here, as the girl model on the cover is Samantha Gates, who was also the model for photographer Hajime Sawatari's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

For Carroll, and I think this is very clear in his writing, children had not just an innocence, but an awareness of the magic of the world that most of us lose as we become older. This magical awareness of the world tended to be represented as the Fairylands, and the trick is to not lose it, or regain it if you have. This was, for the Oxford based Christian fantasy writers, a genuinely spiritual thing, as seen in George MacDonald's and J. R. R. Tolkien's descriptions and explanations of the Fairylands. That's why it wasn't a big leap for C. S. Lewis to take the Fairyland concept and make it an explicit Christian allegory in the Narnia books. The Fairylands/Otherworlds always had a spiritual meaning to these writers. We also see this in the American writer L. Frank Baum's Oz books, with the description that one had to be "like a child" to visit the Fairylands as an adult, and that many children forgot about their visits as they grew older.

good afternoon
Sir, beeing LC's relative maybe you know the answer of why the Liddle family suddenly stopped any contact with him? there are diaries and some pages are cut off by unknown person, those pages reffer exactly to the period when he had been deprived of the allowence to see the little Liddles. someone should keep this family secret - why those pages were cut off, what was written there and after all what happened b/w Liddles and LC? i mean, i am sure one of you, Dodgson's knows that:-)
