Dear God... normally I don't find herbivores cute, but these things are just ridiculously adorable. I mean, really. Look at the stripes and their naked little tails!

D'aaaaaaw!

I've heard squirrels are quite territorial and aggressive, I don't think they're good pet material.

They're certainly cute though!

There is an option in most internet browsers that disables animations. If anyone had a serious problem like that, I'm sure it would be within reason that they should take care of themselves.

Squirrels as pets
[info]lizblackdog
2005-10-26 12:12 pm UTC (link)
I've hand-reared two orphaned grey squirrels that lived with us as pets until adulthood (both returned to the wild eventually) and all I can say is BAD, BAD, BAD IDEA.

They are incredibly cute and scarily intelligent and they can be an incredible amount of fun. They're also (as a previous commenter said) very territorial and aggressive, and being bitten by an animal that can crack Brazil nuts with no effort is not funny. Our first squirrel used to randomly attack people occasionally when she was young - as she got older she progressed to attacking anyone who wasn't my husband or myself, and she'd still take chunks out of me if she was feeling grouchy or if I breathed too loud.

Besides the aggression - squirrels move too quickly to be handled unless they choose to be. Ours didn't, and the only way to get her from one place to another was to encourage her onto your shoulder and hope like hell she didn't leap off on the way. She was impossible to control, she terrified out friends, she went apeshit if she was caged for too long and she destroyed several electrical appliances as well. I loved her and I was glad to have had the experience, but we were all better off when she gradually released herself back into the wild.

If you feel you must have one in your life, I'd recommend making friends with a wild one, or perhaps talking to a wildlife rehabilitation organisation about short-term fostering of orphans. They are fantastic animals; they are not fantastic pets.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou so much.
I work in wildlife rehab and people seem to think I overreact when I flip out at people saying they want to keep a baby squirrel. I've seen it end badly too many times. They're cute, but they don't belong inside.

from what I hear a squirrel can become dependent on you fairly quickly (if you leave food out for a couple of weeks for a squirrel in your neighborhood it will stop gathering food) at least that's what I heard, the only experience I have with squirrels is from watching one run up and down the tree outside my window every 5 seconds...

Awww.....they are so cute! I always wanted a pet squirrel, but like everyone else said, they are wild animals and shouldn't be kept in captivity. If you want a pet rodent, get a hamster, mouse, or rat from your local pet store!

if you want to have fun with squirrels without owning one, I would suggest feeding a couple of the locals till they get used to it and they trying to devise feeders they can't get into. Pit your brains against those of the squirrel and see who wins. And this isn't cruel to the squirrel because people do this all the time when squirrels find their bird feeders and if you do manage to outwit the squirrel they are more than capable of going elsewhere to look for food.
