BU student accuses Brookline residents of ruining THEIR neighboorhood?
I am spitting mad. The BU students are the problem. Not the Egmont Street residents.

"Safety and peace of mind are some things you should never have to sacrifice. Whether it’s your confidence in national defense or more directly your feeling of safety walking home late Saturday night, you should never be denied peace of mind. When the average Boston University student is asked what neighborhoods around campus do they consider the most dangerous and least ideal, you will usually hear the likes of Ashford, Gardner or Pratt Streets, but never Egmont.

Located in Brookline, monthly rent for most of Egmont’s apartments nears $1,000 a bedroom. A block from Dexter Park luxury apartments – the well-to-do BU South area – and only a few blocks from the classier area of Beacon Street, one would never expect that Egmont Street serves as the home of the many thugs who wreak havoc on the BU student community. Egmont Street Veterans Family Housing Project is a facility that has been a problem for the university for years, and is something that I call on the BU administration to fix....."

*EDIT*

I don't know what's going on with the comments. I had "Comment Screening" set to all comments and I just changed it to disabled (6:52). The last time I used lj (a year and a half ago) the setup was pretty different, so I'm not sure if this is the right setting. Can somebody who knows what the settings should be let me know?
I haven't intentionally screened anything. I have no idea why some comments aren't going through.
Mods, please help if you can. I just (7:04 pm) figured out how to unscreen the grey comments, but I don't know how to prevent new comments from being screened.

*Another edit*
I think the problem is solved. Sorry for ruining your fun, _b0st0n_snark/

Even though it's just some overprivileged idiot's editorial in a rapidly-going-downhill student paper, things like this are why I'm ashamed to be a BU student. Believe me, we're not all like that.

What the heck? I lived in the projects there. Thanks, you privileged jerks who get to have a college education.

Angry now.

My favorite paragraph in this entire hack of article:

As those who live in the Ashford/Gardner area already know, BU has put a special interest this year in cracking down on parties in the area by assigning one of their own, director of community relations Joe Walsh, to work with the Brookline Police Department. For the most part this team breaks fraternity house windows and steals the mail at houses that host parties as an attempt to make an example of BU students who committed the terrible crime of drinking and having people come over on a Saturday night.

I'm sure that he has proof that the police smash windows and steal mail, while the police reports indicating that BU students are having 200 of their closest friends overs who end up urinating on the sidewalk and leaving their empties on the street is a complete fabrication.

Yellow.

wow, there's some entitlement right there. boo hoo, you have to experience boston, you can't just be some temporary implant into boston and never see any of the crime and poverty of the area that you live in! nope, don't address any issues or problems within the community you are a guest in, or do anything to try to solve them. just demand that they are shoved as far away from you as you can! great ideas, college students. great ideas.

I understand asking for BU to apply pressure to Brookline to move a housing project because a minority of its residents start trouble at off campus parties sounds selfish and narrow minded but such reasoning has never stopped me before.

Maybe it should.
Don't have open house parties. Problem solved.

"I have spent the weekend in a hospital with a broken jaw and a month with my mouth wired shut because I got sucker punched with brass knuckles in my own house. Granted, you put yourself at risk by throwing parties that you lose control of, but still. I’m not Tupac, I’m no Biggy, I’m a 20-year-old college student who pays 50 grand a year to go to BU. I should not be in these situations."

Wow. I don't even know where to start with that statement. My brain just shut itself off from the sheer amount of wtf.

Also, obviously the only people who should get punched in the face are dead rappers for some reason.

That's pretty brazen. The veterans' families don't like BU students, so BU should buy up their apartment building and evict the families!

The problem with making generalizations about tens of thousands of people is that you'll often be wrong.

You are claiming that BU students cause trouble for Brookline residents who aren't students. But it's certainly possible that some Brookline residents who aren't students sometimes cause trouble for some BU students.

do you live in the area? the problem is the BU students. i will never understand why so many (note: not all) college kids think they have this god given right to binge drink and slack off for 4+ years. you can't impose the college lifestyle on an entire neighbourhood. don't like it? move to the dorms.
