Traffic alert
Now all we need are the Critical Mass douchebags to decide to take a ride.....

From the Globe:

BOSTON

City officials are encouraging Boston drivers to consider using public transportation this weekend because of heavy traffic expected during Gay Pride festivities today, tomorrow, and Sunday, and the Bunker Hill Day Parade and Road Race scheduled for Sunday.

In a statement, Transportation Department Commissioner Thomas J. Tinlin advised drivers that traffic delays and parking restrictions would be in place to accommodate festivities. Traffic will be delayed this evening for the Boston Dyke March starting at 7 p.m. An estimated 800 people will march near Boston Common. Midday Saturday, streets between the South End and City Hall Plaza will be closed for the Gay Pride Parade, where an estimated 35,000 will participate.

In Charlestown Sunday, two morning road races and an afternoon parade commemorating Bunker Hill Day will cause road closures, city officials said. On Sunday, other events are scheduled, including block parties on Stuart Street downtown and in Jamaica Plain.

edit Check out the comments and Ron's post about additional closures/delays etc. And now something of a rarity- instead of just bitching, a useful hint.

For those of you in Boston looking to get over to Cambridge and wanting to avoid the Pride clusterfuck and the Red Line closure, there's a marvelous bus, the 86, which runs from Cleveland Circle down Market St to Harvard Sq and then it continues to Sullivan Sq via Union Sq. So depending on which side of the mess you're on, you can either grab the Orange Line to Sullivan and catch the 86 there or take the Green Line out to Cleveland Circle.

Critical Mass is always the last Friday evening of the month, so the next one is 6/27.

The announcement leaves out one other big event, the Cambridge River Festival on Saturday 6/14 from noon to 6 pm. This closes Memorial Drive from Western Avenue to at least JFK Street (and maybe beyond, I'm not sure).

And to repair railroad ties on the Longfellow Bridge, the Red Line is replaced by buses this weekend and next between Park Street and Kendall Square. Come to think of it, this weekend would be an excellent time to get around by bicycle.

So, in other words, it's a total clusterfuck and I should be grateful I'm spending most of my day in Hingham. Never thought I'd say THAT.

You know why you never heard that? Because no one ever said that.

In other words, I should scrap my Saturday plans to head into Cambridge to visit China Fair and Modern brewer, unless I take the T, or bring a good audio book to listen to in the car.

Mass Ave will probably be a parking lot.

I'd suggest taking the commuter train from North Station to Porter Square, to avoid all of this. China Fair and Modern Brewer are a short walk from there.

A bicycle ride that assembles at Copley Square on the last Friday evening of every month. The 'official' time is 5:30, but I've never seen it actually leave before 6:15. The leaderless ride usually wanders through parts of Back Bay, downtown, the Fenway, and Cambridge, but it's different every month.

Ron is giving you the sanitized version.

Critical mass is a loosely organized mass bike ride/protest that originally sought to raise awareness of bikes by clotting up streets. Now it's no longer a protest, it's just an excuse for holier than thou asshats to take over intersections, performing a "cyclone" maneuver, lifting their bikes to halt traffic so they can have a captive audience to preach to. If you're a biker that loves riding through red lights and thinks your shit doesn't stink and you have no carbon footprint just because you bike, it's home.

Boston roads are already small, narrow and poorly thought out.

Check that, not thought out AT ALL. Even the new ones seem to be placed randomly.

Adding bike lanes is next to impossible in most of the city. It would be a waste of money and resources that would be better spent on things like visible street signs. Of course decent signage is as foreign to Boston as city planning, so I'm not holding my breath.

After having read all of these comments, the only thing I have to say is people sure are bitching like a bunch of little kids with skinned knees. Srsly, you all are making a big deal out of nothing. Public transportation in Boston has always been less than ideal, so learn to work with it, or get the hell out.
