crash on Storrow Drive
Approximately 30 minutes ago, 11:45, a too-tall truck crashed into the Charles St. area bridge on Storrow Drive - and it's not even September!

I was walking across the bridge at the time. The sidewalk was closed so I was walking along the bike path anyway, right next to cars, and all of a sudden there's this huge CRASH and the bridge shook and for a moment I thought I was going to be creamed. Then I realized the crash was below, not on level with me, and saw the cars backing up on Storrow. I detoured onto the foot bridge that leads to the Esplanade to take you all a few pictures:

You can kind of see the guy under the bridge in the second and third pictures, in the white pants, out surveying what was wrecked. I think it was the driver. I don't think anyone was hurt.

This is part of the Longfellow Bridge, which has enough problems already! Hope this didn't cause any structural damage.

My second fear was that whatever crash had occurred had damaged the bridge and it was going to collapse with me on it.

My first fear, of course, being that the crash occurred next to me and was about to hit me.

Maybe he's a summer college student.

Seriously, it astounds me that this is still a problem. I think the city is going to have to take much stronger measures, especially with the bridge the way it is!

Like some concrete 12' barrier at the entrances perhaps.

Twice a year, when the students are moving in and when they're moving out, my wife and I debate heading out to Storrow and Memorial drives to camp out at the low bridges, waiting for a crash. They supposedly happen daily when the students rent trucks and ignore the maximum height warnings when getting onto those roads.

I want to get footage, ideally to make a safety video Boston schools can send to students.

Whuffle thinks that's just my excuse to see disaster and mayhem.

I retort with "So what if it is?"

Somehow I lose the argument at that point.

I still think it would be a keen afternoon picnic.

i just got home for lunch (from watertown) and i saw storrow traffic backed up to fenway (where i exit) - i think i would still be on storrow if i'd left work 10 minutes later.

the bridges always pwn the trucks in these battles.

how fast was he going?
they really need to increase the fine for these idjits.

or at least for the students:
take pictures of their accident and them then publish it around the campuses. you don't want to look like an ass, well then don't drive like one.

In Cambridge, you're arrested when you cause one of these accidents. To get into this situation you have to ignore a number of warning signs.

Why can't they put up bars that say " CLEARANCE [x]' [x]" " that would smack into your truck if you weren't going to fit under the bridge? I've seen them on some highway on-ramps in Boston.
