Hey guys, just a quick q. On my way home, I saw a large, turkey-like bird trotting back and forth in front of the playground on Beacon Hill. It looked scared and nervous, so I tried to call animal control, but no one answered. Is there a shelter that would come pick up a turkey? I'm afraid some people in the neighborhood might let their little dogs attack it. And this is actually true - I really did see a turkey-esque bird in the Hill today, and I'm just trying to do the right thing.

turkeys live all over the place in the city. you must have missed my post about the one that lived in kendall until recently. let me see if i can find it and maybe the same group would come get this one.

make no mistake though, i'm pretty sure the turkey would poke out the little dog's eyes and eat it.

Oops, I guess I did miss that post. So I guess it's not a big deal and the turkey is okay?

np, it was a little while ago in "internet time" heh. just wanted you to know we wouldn't think you were crazy ;)

the turkey is probably fine, though it's never less weird to me that they'd want to hang out in the city!

ah! here is the post. if it seems like something is wrong with it or it keeps hanging around and is in danger/endangering others you could try contacting the animal rescue league.

yea, as [info]sparkgrrl658 said above, a turkey can and will TOTALLY take on any yapping little dog that has the stupidity to come after it. turkey are freaking vicious (i'm serious). i'm sure it'll be fine.

this city is, weirdly, chock full o' turkeys. i had them in my yard when i lived in allston and several live in my neighborhood in brookline now. they seem to take care of themselves pretty well!

yup, they heart Baruchline, cuz construction or something like that has made them flee their natural hangout spot. i even got interviewed about it, as did a bunch of other people on here. famous on the internets.

Turkeys are tough little fuckers. When I still lived in NH, I had a flock of them wandering through my backyard. Tried to chase them off, but they seemed to realize that they outnumbered me.

It was not a proud moment.

We've had a turkey skulking around my condo complex in Manchester for weeks now. They are pretty crazy. He decided to perch himself on a jeep.

If I was you, I'd be more worried about getting any closer to that turkey and applying human attributes to it like "looking nervous." The only thing that bird was contemplating was which artery of yours to sever if your ugly, inquisitive face got any closer.

too true. While I crossed the street, some other curious folk were following the bird. Fortunately no one tried to pet it! :)

Wild turkeys have made a big comeback in Massachusetts. I wouldn't worry about the safety of the one you saw--I'm sure it could kick a Beacon Hill dog's ass. Plus, despite how they look, they can fly, so it's not in any danger, at least not from predators. It might end up on the bumper of car on Charles street, though.

Boston Animal Control will not respond to a turkey sighting. Coyote, maybe (but more likely they'll refer you to the animal rescue league), moose definitely, but turkey, never. You might as well call in that you saw a chickadee.

Turkeys can be vicious. Best to leave them alone, and watch from a distance.

Best defense against a turkey is an umbrella.

Seriously. As long as you don't corner one, opening an umbrella will show them who's boss. I keep one in the truck just for such an occasion.

that reminds me of a news story i saw a few years back about turkeys in brookline scary and attacking little kids, but the city couldn't do anything about it because, apparently, they are protected animals around here. i don't know if that last part is true, but essentially the city said "fuck you, we're not gonna do anything about the turkeys."

There was a group of 4 turkeys on Longwood halfway between Coolidge Corner and the Riverway in Brookline.
I walked by them on my way to school, stopped, stared at them, then shrugged and walked by.
