a question about etiquette / mbta
please discard or disregard your conclusions and assumptions you have of me as a person and consider answering seriously....(at least at first!)

i was on the T today eating a bagel with peanut butter, listening to my ipod, reading that Metro rag. A woman sitting diagonally accross from me waved to get my attention. Normally I dont respond to people like this...but it was early and I wasn't 100% yet LOL. She told me that I shouldn't eat peanut butter in public because someone could have a an allergy. My instinct was to tell her to mind her business and that if someone has an allergy they better get off at the next stop! But i bit my tongue and just gave her a dirty look and continued eating. I was mildly offended by this chick trying to tell me (a stranger) what to do.

Now, I'm well aware of the legitimacy and severity of peanut allergies. my general feeling is that if you got it, you should have one of those pens or an inhaled steroid to counter a reaction. In other words, the individual is responsible for their own safety not the 100 people around them. In no way should 100 people pander to 1 individual. Thats a rediculous thing to expect or ask.

If you guys were in my position, what would you have said/done?

Because strangers on the T with peanut allergies are going to eat your peanut butter sandwich, right?

whatever in peanuts that causes an allergic reaction can be airborn. i was recently on a plane where they announced that no one could eat snacks because someone on board had a peanut allergy.

I actually worry about that a lot, because peanut allergies are really serious. My friend has one, and someone sitting next to her on a train started eating peanuts, and so her throat closed up and she broke out in hives and all that, and had to stab herself in the leg on the crowded train. Traumatizing for her, because that is a panic worthy situation (!!!) and also for small children on the train.
So, yeah, think about that for a bit, i guess.

i probably would have said something to the effect of, "go fuck yourself."

I agree with you, if someone has a particular allergy to something they may come in contact with in a public environment, they should be responsible to protect themselves--not you.

in a similar way, I know people who are deathly allergic to hornets/wasps but work in garden centers and nurseries. But they have the epipen with them at all times, just in case.

I would think that unless you were wiping your peanut butter covered fingers on the seats and/or railings or licking other passengers... Peanut Allergy suffers would be pretty safe.

As someone with alot of food allergies I agree with common courtesy but also accept responsibility that if my allergy to something is that severe - the onus of protection would be on me to protect my own health.

Where did this death from peanut butter hysteria come about? When I was a kid, we used to swap our pb & j sandwiches at lunch all the time and nobody ended up dying from the deadly nuts. Now, many schools won't even allow peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the building. Jeez.

How can someone get sick from someone else eating peanut butter? It doesn't make much sense to me.

One of the theories for the upswing in allergies is that kids now grow up in such a sanitised world- antibiotic cleaning spray, OMG they cannot get the sniffles, ever, that thier immune systems have nothing to do. So they attack harmless things, like peanuts.

Heck, I'd love to tell the people who eat their nasty smelling food on the train to stop.
But it's just stupid, you are in a public place. That's like me and my spouse going into a restaurant and telling the people they can't eat Lobster because my husband is deathly allergic to it.

And while it would be scary for him to use his epipen in any case, you can't really change your diet to accommodate the allergies of random strangers. So basically in any food court you can't eat anything that anyone may be allergic to due to allergies someone may have.

I have a pretty bad fruit allergy. There's simply some fruits I cannot be around, not even close to - never mind handling or ingesting.

That said, it's not written on my forehead that I have this allergy. It's not something that the rest of the world bears responsibility for knowing about. I have to live with it and have to handle it. Just because I am allergic to those fruits doesn't mean others can't enjoy them.

That woman was a wackadoo for saying that to you. Someone with a known allergy to peanut butter would be wise enough not to go near you and she should have minded her own business.

definitely.

especially since pb on a bagel is easily recognizable - i.e. not a sandwich that you can't tell what's in it, or crushed nuts as part of a bar or something.

unfortunately responsibility for one's own self is something that seems to be quickly going out the window.

people shouldn't eat when they're on public transportation. when you're in such close proximity with so many strangers, it wouldn't hurt to be a little bit more accommodating so that everyone's ride is a tiny bit less of an ordeal.

incidentally, in New York eating on the MTA is illegal.

#1 I admire the intro you placed on this post. (That was not sarcasm.)

#2. Agreed. There are MANY things people can be allergic to, and a very small number of those are illegal. In other words - I'm sorry, but I'm not going to take a survey of what each individual MBTA passenger is allergic of, before choosing what to carry with me onto the public subway in my hazmat suit. Shit, it's not like you were drinking a jar of bees.

With that said, I sometimes try to be more nice than the person I play on TV, and would suck it up and put the bagel away without any hostile words (which would definitely be going through my head). I'd rather that than find out she was the one allergic to peanut butter, and accidentally kill her as I punched her in the face.

When you go out into public, you take your chances--period. You're not responsible for everyone else. That includes smokers, people wearing too much perfume, people who have pet dander all over them, et cetera.

I'd love to have told that lady that maybe bathing and wearing deoderant is the responsible thing to do, too. In fact I'd seriously love to tell a LOT of people who ride the T to please fucking do so. But is it polite? No.

I think eating something as messy as peanut butter on the train is kind of gross in general, but that aside, the woman was being rude. I'm allergic to a lot of perfumes and body sprays but I don't expect everyone on the train to stop wearing it, I just move to the other side of the train if I get a whiff that starts bothering me.
Also, I thought peanut butter, because of it's processing and lack of dust, wouldn't be as apt to release its peanutty particles into the air as regular whole peanuts would anyway.

Yeesh, really? That's annoying.

Ignoring her was the right thing to do; peanut allergies are of course real and some of them really are that drastic, but that's a really obnoxious and ridiculous thing to say to somebody.

You ignored her, didn't beat her down, or waste your bagel in an experiment to see if she was allergic to peanut butter.

I see no fault on your part for having your breakfast in public.

my reaction, "Oh! Are you allergic? Is this bothering you?"

if she said, "No," then "Okay then, I trust that if someone is truly bothered, they'll say something to me. Thanks for lettign me know that this could be a problem."

What, she thinks that because someone MAY be allergic, you have to not eat peanut butter to pander to the hypothetical situation? whatever. "someone may be allergic to your attitude, ma'am."

It's a little irritating how many people live in fear of hypotheticals. My personal favorite is "Think of the children!"

I didn't know people could react to peanuts when someone else is eating them

Yes, in extremely severe cases.

But probably not peanut butter, because I can't imagine that it gives off peanut dust the way actual peanuts would.

My only problem is that you shouldn't eat on the T. It's one of my pet peeves. The Metro (DC's transit system) doesn't allow it (and can actually fine you) and I think it works for the better. It's gross to touch food that the hands that touch any part of the MBTA without washing them first. It also creates crumbs and the like.

And even if you are so hungry you can't wait to get off, take a bite and leave it be. That's my rant.

But for PB allegies... Who cares. It could be serious, but what are you supposed to do? Carry epi-pens around if you have peanut butter with you for potential allergic people?

i generally agree with your level of germ awareness however it was wrapped in food service paper so the only part of my body that was touching it was my mouth.

whaaat. i know plenty of people with peanut allergies, they don't have reactions unless they touch/ingest it -- if someone's going to have THAT bad an allergic reaction by just being near it, they are basically at risk at all times and should be appropriately prepared.
