Toscanini's CLOSED - More info
Looks like Toscanini's started a website to help them get back on their feet. Hasn't hit newspapers yet, but it probably will by tomorrow...

What? So this dude doesn't pay his taxes, then has the balls to ask for money to pay that debt off? Oh efff that. The ice cream is good and all, but only an idiot would give that guy money when he squandered it in the first place. I'm sorry, but if he was hard-up and honest about it, the IRS would have worked with him, but the reports said he made no effort.

There's a lot more deserving of places to give money. A lot.

ETA: What the spam? This dude's user ID has already been deleted.

I disagree with this campaign (and I'll comment more below), but I don't see anything spammish about it.

the comments are great so far

"I don't care whose fault it is or what led to taxes not being paid, I care about having a city that is filled with more than just global chains and their focus group-engineered offerings. Toscanini's is a part of what makes Cambridge a vital, livable place. Donating money to the Save Toscanini's fund isn't paying someone else's debt, it's supporting an enriched urban life in Cambridge." - Bryan, Internet User, Mentally Retarded

Oh you moron, donating is THE EXACT DEFINITION OF PAYING SOMEONE ELSE'S DEBT ARE YOU HIGH?

Honestly, if you came to this site, you probably like the ice cream, or the coffee. If you dont like the product they sell, you're just here to be a jerk, and you're sending negative energy into the universe for no reason.

OMG GONNA GET BAD KARMA FOR QUESTIONING WHY ANYONE WOULD GIVE MONEY TO THIS DICK

Yeah, it'll be in the paper tomorrow:

*****

The Boston Herald is running a story tomorrow ( Monday) about Toscanini's Web site asking people to donate money to help save the shop. We'd like to hear what people think of this. If you see this message before 5:30 p.m. today and have a moment to let us know what you think, please contact Staff Writer Marie Szaniszlo at (617) 799-0476 or mszaniszlo@bostonherald.com

Thanks for your time.
*****

By my count, even the comments on *their* site are only 55-45 in favor. They are getting whacked.

Donations, my butt.

Gift cards, maybe.

Shares, maybe.

Donations, no, I am sorry.

The Tosci owners were SUCH assholes to the Someday Cafe employees that I am sort of welling up with a bit of shaedenfreude. Save Tosci's my ass ... try being grown-ups and taking responsibility for your shitty business decisions.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!

Taking responsibility for shitty business decisions? It is to lol. Who does that anymore? If you're the CEO of a big company and you fuck up, you get a golden parachute courtesy of the stockholders and employees; if you're the CEO of a little company, apparently you ask nerds for handouts.

I like how they have a list of community organizations they have donated to. That's great! But perhaps maybe you should have used some of that money to PAY YOUR DAMN TAXES!

y'know, I'd wondered about the viability of the Tosci's brand after Rancatore started setting up ice cream shops with the "Rancatore" name (e.g. in Lexington, perhaps elsewhere?). It made me wonder if he knew something about the Tosci name/location. I mean, if Tosci is such a good name, why not use it in his new venture?

Let's see, a business shows an incredible deal of utter (well documented) incompetence over the past...3 years? And their response is to ask for money?

Anyone who gives them anything is an idiot. Honestly, if they somehow pull out of this or start a new business, I will probably go out of my way to avoid it.

A friend of mind pointed something interesting out to me.

When Pandemonium Books and Games moved from The Garage to Central Square, the opening was delayed by inspection issues.

From what I remember, the owner sold "bonds" for $100, that after several months would be redeemable for $110 of merchandise.

He also commissioned a fairly well-known comic artist (a friend, I think) to do a t-short design, and he sold the t-shirts as well.

There's another post on the Tosci's blog that says they have raised more than $5,000 so far.

That site is either a fake or Rancatore is totally fucking shameless. They mismanage the business (a business beloved by the community) to $100K in the hole and then they ask for DONATIONS? Ridiculous. I really can't believe they've already gotten thousands in donations.

Also, I think they sell their ice cream at like, Whole Foods, maybe some other places, so it's not like they were THAT small of a business, with one tiny little shop struggling to make ends meet.

One thing I'm sure hurt their business: endless street construction right in front of their store. It's taking the city of Cambridge forever to redesign and rebuild Lafayette Square. At times, you could not even see Toscanini's from Mass. Ave.

Not that I am a huge fan of this place I think I have gone all of twice, but haven't we been "helping" pay his taxes by paying for our ice cream and then the 5% MA Meal tax on top of that, that is included in every food purchase at restaurants?

Yeah moron that's not a 5% you get to keep on top of everything profit, you are supposed to pass that on to the government. So even my two cups in the past HELPED you pay the MA state government, I'm not helping you again.

If they can't run their business properly, why should we bail them out. It's not like they were closing for lack of business. They're closing because the owners can't pay their taxes.

Forget bailing them out.
