Transit Police Rampage
As I do everyday on my way home I got off the commuter boat at Hingham today, walked to the parking lot, up the aisle I thought I'd left my car in... and then down another aisle... then up the previous for good measure... after 30min of this and some concern for my mental wellbeing I walked to the MBTA office and asked a question I never thought I'd have to ask. "Hello... have... uhm... any cars been towed or anything from the lot today?"

To my rather conflicted reassured and bemused surprise, the response I got was "Oh yes! Lots and lots! That guy over there too! *points to the seat in the corner*" The guy hands me a sheet of paper with a LOT of license plates, makes, models, colors listed on it. "Is one of these yours?!" I'm thinking jesus christ, was this a massive drug swoop or something?! The guy that was in the corner comes over and starts detailing his 30min headstart on the situation.

So as it's almost end of the month, and as the commuter boat parking lot has about 2,000 spaces most of which are full every single day, apparently the transit police decided to get their budget up to spec a little and audited EVERY, SINGLE, CAR in the parking lot for expired inspections and registrations and all those good things and TOWED, EVERY, SINGLE, CAR that failed to comply. The best part is that the towing company has, you know, normal business hours so you can't actually resolve the issue until tomorrow, oh but that doesn't matter because you can't rightly prove your stickers are valid until tomorrow either (the Mass. RMV website crashed on me too, yippee!)

Being as this is Mass., Christ knows whose brother's cousin's towing company is getting extra big Christmas bonuses this year.

So I just wanted to rant in case anyone else was greeted to this same crazy fiasco as I this evening.

Did you pay to park there? If so, is it one of those self pay boxes or do you hand money to someone?

Is this the part where somebody hunts down the OP's flickr account and finds out that the car is a dented pile of garbage with no license plates, registration, or a passenger door?

Did your car have proper inspection and registration, and was it marked as such? 'cause if not, don't park on a government lot. Really.

I got a ticket in a private parking lot in JP for an expired registration. I never even saw the cop. It still burns my ass to this day that I went in to Brigham's to get an ice cream and came out to find a ticket. It ruined ice cream for me, I tell ya!

Why does it burn you? I mean...did you consider maybe properly registering your car? It's not like it's either all that difficult to remember to do. Registrations expire on your birth month every single year. Unless you're flighty enough to forget your own birthday, there's no excuse to be driving around with an expired registration. Shit, they even give you ten days after your yearly inspection to do it.

Meh, while I was trying to sell it, my car was parked in the parking lot in the *private* parking lot at my residence - an apartment complex in woburn.. and a cop happened to drive by, noticed an expired inspection sticker, and MAILED me a ticket. I disputed it, had to remind the guy several times that the moving violation occurred while I wasn't even present, that it was stored on private property, wasn't being driven, etc - and even though I'm pretty sure he had no ground to stand on, he was the biggest dick I've ever seen.

So, crowd, what was I doing wrong? =) =) =)

I don't see how it's illegal to have an un-registed, un-inspected car on private property so long as you have permission from the owner.

It is, actually, a finable and towable offense to have an unregistered (And if your inspection sticker was expired, your registration was too) vehicle in an apartment complex lot. Legally speaking, you can have one unregistered vehicle on your property if you are the sole resident. Consider yourself lucky all you got was a ticket, I've gotten towed in NH for it.

My tenants have an unregistered eyesore of a car sitting in my driveway that they keep making excuses about moving. I finally decided that I would report them and have it towed, but I found out that as the property owner I would be the one who gets the fine. Needless to say, it is still sitting there, nothing I can do about it.

I am very interested in how this turns out. I nearly had my inspection sticker expire on me through no fault of my own.

I ended up making seven visits to various inspection stations in Waltham. Visits one through six resulted in no inspection occurring due to circumstances beyond my control (their machine was broken, the state computer was down, the inspector had a doctor's appointment, the machine was broken again, etc). I finally got the car inspected just as August was drawing to a close (and as a bonus, it passed the inspection).

It could have turned out differently. My car could have had an expired inspection sticker in spite of my reasonable efforts to avoid that.

Therefore it angers me that they have taken to towing cars with expired inspection stickers. At least with a ticket you still have use of your car while you explain to the state that it is the state's fault you don't have a sticker. I will certainly be writing my elected officials about this -- this is crazy.

They don't, to the best of my knowledge, tow for stickers, they just ticket, which you can fight and then explain in court.

They tow for expired registration, absolutely, although if you're pulled over at a traffic stop they will most likely let you bring the car home and just hand you the ticket and tell you to fix it right away. I forgot my registration expired awhile ago and it happened to me.

I don't think they do this, actually. As [info]kpht says.

I think the OP here had an expired registration, which is quite different.
