spare change guy warning
I'm sorry to top post this, if moderators feel the need to move it I understand. However, I didn't want this to get lost. The "have any spare change guy" is not the harmless, "famous" guy you might think. I worked downtown for 7 years in his main "hood" around downtown crossing. He does his whole "do you have any spare change " "I just want a cup of coffee" thing if there are many people around, however if you are a single female around him, what his says is very different and sexually threatening.

I have personally been harrased by him on 2 different occasions, a few years apart. I also saw him say some very violent and sexually explicit things to another young woman who was by herself until I turned the corner, I then walked with her and he went back to the spare change routine. She was very relieved someone came along.

He is a danger to women in the area, and trust me what he says and how he says it is very scary, especially when you are used to him being around and the second no one is within hearing range, his story changes.

Both times I found a local police officer, who both times indicated that they were aware of such complaints from area women, many suffolk u undergrads, they advised me to stay far away, and that they keep a "close eye on him".

I'm not trying to go on an anti homeless rant, most are harmless, this fellow however is NOT harmless, and it scares me when see people talking about him as a "character" and not the sexual deviant that he is.

So if you are a woman reading this, please steer far far clear of him. Please don't let stories like the one below let you have your guard down around him. One sister to another, please just stay away from him and be careful when he is nearby, especially if you are alone.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had a creepy run-in with him. I was leaving work one afternoon, back when I was a youngin' working at the State House, and he started with the spare change routine, but after about a second, things switched. I was trying to leave, but he got right up in my face and cornered me, and started asking how old I was (I was probably only 16 or so at the time) and where I was going, until suddenly, out of nowhere, this big angry man came running from across the street. He had his fists raised and was yelling things along the lines of "get away, you're a child molester, leave her alone, etc." He proceeded to chase Spare Change Guy down the street.

Since then, I've made a point of changing to the other side of the street any time I see or hear him around.

Is this the guy who's usually at Park Street? Tall, longish grey hair, beard, glasses (?)...

that guy scares me.

Spare Change Guys...

2007-10-23 11:55 am UTC (link)
Often are jerks who assume that I will give them five bucks if they just leer at me hard enough while telling me how much they like my hair or whatever. It's really just a question of degree of harassment in this case. Hopefully this particular guy will make that fact more clear to women and they will stop giving change to jerkoffs who think we should pay for the right for strange men to go all googly-eyed at us while talking about how pretty we are.

They aren't all bad though. I used to live on Boylston St. near the Pru and one of the guys there I got to know pretty well. Used to give him change and we'd always chat, but eventually he stopped wanted to take it from me, and he's just ask me how things were going and we'd talk for a minute. He'd also do things like offer me a t token (back when they were around) that someone gave him since he didn't use the T and once warned about some drunk guy stumbling around and gestured for me to walk on while he distracted him. So while I ignore the guys who say sexual things, I do think it's not bad practice to be nice to the more benign ones if they live/work right in your neighborhood, since they are probably the neighbors you have that you'll interact with most.

I'm also wondering how I'm meant to define the Spare Change Guy, given that I get spare-changed at least three times per block when I'm on the Common or in DTX.

The scruffy skinny bearded dude who drags it out really long and nasally and kinda tenorish. "You got any spaaaaaaaaaaaair chayyyyyyyyyynge?"

He's usually somewhere near the Common; likes to hang around the bus stops and harrass people there. Didn't know about his more creepy side, though!

Sure, but scruffy unshaven homeless guys are a dime a dozen. I guess I'd know him if I saw him, but I think he needs a more unique moniker!

SPCG looks Northern European, and is on the tall and slim-side.
Hangs out on the Boston Common among other places.

The scary thing to me is, like other people are mentioning, there is more than one 'spare change guy', and the 'identifying' features and mannerisms people mention in other posts and this one describe alot of them. I don't really ever give any of them spare change, but it is scary to know that one particular guy is actually a frightening person but not knowing which one it is.

I'd suggest emailing Spare Change and letting them know that he gives bad cred to the organization. Perhaps if enough folks complain about him, something could be done.

There is no reason that one must fall victim to a potentially hostile situation.

I don't think he's in any way affiliated with the Spare Change paper.

When Fox news ran stories on this guy a year or two ago, making him a minor homeless celeb, I sent them 2 emails and never received a response.

Yep, he has nothing at all to do with the spare change newspaper. He just asks people for spare change, he isn't selling Spare Change!

Spare Change Guy is not linked to "SpareChange"
[info]suite6
2007-10-30 11:36 pm UTC (link)
Spare Change Guy is a private entrepreneur, if you will, and is in no way connected to the "Spare Change" newspaper, which is a self-advocacy publication written and sold by the Homeless. "Spare Change" newspaper deserves public support, and is quite legitimate. Spare Change Guy is probably needy too, but he also scares a lot of people, myself included.

Yes, yes... folks informed me of this. My bad. When I heard "SpareChange" I immediately affiliated the homeless guy with the newspaper, not recognizing that that was just a nickname that he inherited.
