Introducing the CharlieCard mitten
This is brilliant. How long before someone starts producing them commercially?

I would make a modification - place the button at the other end of the pocket, so that if it comes undone your charlie card doesn't fall out and make you extra sad (extra sad because now you've wasted money on these mittens that didn't work righh AND lost your charlie card.)

I started working on a pair a week and a half ago after swatching to make sure that it would work (I was worried the yarn might be too thick so I made a sample to try on the bus that night, and I was trying something different in the pocket making area that will bore you silly if you don't knit).

It got pushed aside while I was prepping for Arisia and helping others prep, but I showed it to about 30 people at Arisia itself, and got this response pretty constantly. :-) It seems so obvious, though; I'm *really* surprised that local mass producers (or at least sewers, who can make mittens much faster than knitters) hadn't started it already.

Obviously you and I should go into business making these and selling them. *nods* Would the store sell them?

but don't you have to take your other hand out of the mitten to open the button to take it out, or is there an opening on the underside to only remove your fingers? It's cute, but kinda useless to me it looks. If your whole hand needs to come out of a mitten, then unbutton it, I fail to see how it is different from unzipping your purse.
i dunno

why would you need to unbutton it? just put the back of your hand up on the card reader.

You should never need to take it out of the pocket. Just hold the mitten up to the pass reader or the vending machine.

It's for the CharlieCard, which needs to be waved over a sensor (and not the CharlieTicket, which needs to be put into the machine). The pocket is thin enough that it doesn't affect the reader.

you don't have to take the card out of the pocket to use it. just hold your hand up to the sensor.

indeed, the fact that there's no more swiping/inserting/etc [which i promptly forgot, even though i do it every day] is what makes this awesome.

what a great idea.

except, i don't like the looks of these, but that is just me. great idea.

Yes! Did you use the same pattern that subway knitter (Colleen) has for these? I'm surprised she didn't do a combination of the patterns. LOVE the icon by the way- so true isn't it??

oh WORD!

ps, me n my friends refer to these as 'smokers gloves' because, yanno...they're good for that.

i like these much better. now, make with the sewing and the ups-ing.

I was just thinking that it would be great with my fingerless gloves

it would be easy enough, use the pattern for the fingerless gloves, then add the pocket part on the back of the hand

Those are fantastic. I totally forgot that they can be tapped through things.

Now I wonder, could I pull this off with tapping my purse against the sensor?

Probably. Try it and see. It works through my wallet.

Very nice!

I bought myself a wallet at Target in about October when I heard the new tap cards were coming. My friends in chicago just hold their wallets up to the sensors. But my wallet is fancy and has a little card slot that pulls out of the wallet without having to open the thing (but stays attached by a small ribbon).

While a cute idea I just put my Charlie card inside my actual mitten/glove. No buttons to undo... no gloves to lose alongside a Charlie card. Once used the card goes safely into my wallet when I am in a safe place again to do so.

even though I like the button, I would think it would be better if the pocket was INSIDE the glove. Then, it's stuck in there forever.

Actually, the RFID chip should be INSIDE our brains. Then we shall be happy.

mmm...brain mittens

Until the first warm day, when you leave home without the glove, and therefore without the card.
