HUGE Explosion??
Anyone else rocked by that explosion about 10 minutes ago??

I'm in Danvers - thought my windows were going to break, it was so severe! I've counted a good 18 emergency vehicles go by the major roadway visible from my window (Water St) and can see huge flames.....but nothing on the news, boston.com, mbta.com, cnn, or any of the local channels. Red Cross was unaware, too.

Anyone know what the hell is going on?

EDIT: Seems the fire is at the Propane factory on Water St (Rt. 35 - corner of Bates and River)- near the Bakery and and the Pizza Factory, both completely destroyed.. My ex is a Ham - just called saying he could see the flames from his place in Peabody! A whole neighborhood evac'd.

From WBZ: http://www.wbz1030.com/pages/129514.php?contentType=4&contentId=245495

Google Maps location: http://tinyurl.com/y86lr9

EDIT: As another pointed out below, in the end it turned out that an ink factory was what blew up - not the propane facility initially thought. The destruction was phenomenal - but still, no major injuries, thank goodness!

Yeah, I'm on North St. (In Salem) I thought something hit the roof of my place.

Oh well, no sleeping now. AM 1030 has some radio coverage of it on the scene.

Seems a propane gas place on Water St(near the bowling alley) exploded and a bunch of houses are on fire. It's just...oh, around the corner from my house! Gak!

Just saw about 5 ambulances leave across the Water St Bridge with full lights & siren plus an escort, so I'm assuming some injuries of a type.

Seems several people had glass injuries, but the whole neighborhood has been evac'd. I can smell the smoke, but no fire over by the Diner yet (where I am), but maybe I'll get dressed...just in case. Heh.

wtf? ok, at 2:56 at my time, I suddenly felt a rumble, in *cambridge* (I just looked it up; I'm 21.9 miles from there, so the same as the officer quoted in that article). It wasn't strong, but it was unusual, and I glanced over at the clock thinking maybe I'd knit too long and the T was starting up. I'm just off Mass Ave., between Central and Harvard, and during the day I can feel the subway going by from time to time. It felt rather like that, and until coming upstairs and reading this, I figured they were just doing some late night track maintenance or something.

ink factory

The Herald article says the fire was at a ink factory, not at the neighboring propane tank. I remember when an ink factory burned down in my neighborhood eight years ago. It destroyed three buildings and filled the entire area with smoke for many blocks around. I'd never seen so many cities' fire equipment in one place before.

Some photos of the Beacon Ink fire
a few other pages referring to that fire

My ex is a Ham

It took me a few reads before I realized that he wasn't making jokes about the explosion and instead was an amateur radio operator... :)
