| "Financial" planner (poor student)? |
[Nov. 25th, 2009|07:44 am] |
(I recall reading a similar post months ago, but LJSeek - like my school's FinAid Office - is complete crap)
I'm about to enter repayment on yacht's worth of student loans, and since I also have a convoluted future educational expense, I'm not sure which of the repayment options to choose. The loan servicing center can't advise on plan selection, and considering my dubious financial savvy, I don't trust myself not to make a grave error.
Can anyone suggest a person who could sit with me for an hour and help me select an option? Someone like Suze Orman, but local and <$150/hr? If they are good, I may also save up my shekels and use him/her to sort out my other finances.
*sigh* Should have just gotten a yacht. |

| MBTA real-time bus updates |
[Nov. 24th, 2009|12:18 pm] |
As posted on mbta yesterday, the MBTA have got together with NextBus to start a trial run of an online feed that provides the current location and estimated arrival times of their buses. Only five routes are represented at the moment - the 39, 111, 114, 116 and 117 - but the feed is freely available, so developers can tap into it and use the data to create pages that can make a decent guess at telling you when your bus is going to arrive.
There's a page that went up last week that plots the current location of buses by route on a Google map, written by Joe Shaw. I also threw a next bus ETA predictor together last night (and then had dreadful nightmares about buses) which should work on IE and Firefox at least - you can search for nearby buses by route and the stop where you're waiting. If anyone here uses these routes and can say whether the pages are at all accurate, and if they work from mobile devices like the iPhone, that would really be appreciated - I can't test them myself yet because the buses for the trial run are nowhere near me.
Also, if you want to see the service expanded to other routes, you could email the MBTA through their contact page and let them know that there's demand for this kind of service - I contacted them myself yesterday in the hope that encouragement might speed the process up a bit. You never know, it might help.
The XML feed and instructions for accessing it can be found at http://www.eot.state.ma.us/developers/realtime/ .
Updated: My page has now been reworked to make it more mobile-friendly, using a single page with GET parameters. |

| Brand New w/ Manchester Orchestra, 12/03 at Lupo's in Providence. |
[Nov. 24th, 2009|10:39 am] |
I'm aware that this event is not taking place in Boston, but I live here so I'm posting it here.
I purchased two General Admission tickets to the Brand New/Manchester Orchestra show at Lupo's on 12/03 and can't go. I'm selling them for $25 a pop. Basically saving you the $5+ in fees per ticket.
They're e-tickets (print at home) so, it's just a matter of me either A. printing them out for you, or B. emailing them to you after payment is received.
I really hope someone wants these, would be bummed if they went to waste.
EDIT:
Sorry folks, a friend took them off my hands! |

| Cheapish cuts in Brookline/Allston/Brighton? |
[Nov. 24th, 2009|01:11 am] |
Yes, yet another hair salon post! Snark away.
I need to rush out quickly while the babysitter is watching my sprogs and get my hair hacked into shape by a decent stylist. I live in Brookline, so I need somewhere local. And reasonably priced ($40 or less), but not Supercuts or the like. Any ideas, b0st0n? |

| Any UMB students here? |
[Nov. 23rd, 2009|08:48 pm] |
I hope this allowed even though it doesn't pertain to everyone in this comm directly. I tried finding a UMB community on LJ but either it doesn't exist or I just missed it. Fred Phelps (the God Hates Fags guy) is coming to OUR school. Here's some copypasta on getting involved in protesting his presence at our university.
FIGHT HOMOPHOBIA! PROTEST FRED PHELPS WHEN HE COMES TO U MASS BOSTON!

... of Boston, but hopefully not b0st0n.
Have you ever rented a vacation rental home in or near the Berkshires? If so, can you recommend a house or a rental company? I'm looking to rent a bigger place with a bunch of friends, and would love to hear your recommendations.
Thanks!! |

| Hair help? |
[Nov. 23rd, 2009|02:05 pm] |
Hey everyone, I screwed up my hair pretty badly the other day and I need emergency salon help. Any recommendations? I'm looking for a place that will be able to turn my newly brown hair back to blonde, and can fit me in anytime before Thursday. I'm willing to travel anywhere that's accessible by T since I am very desperate. |

I am going into town to watch the tree lighting at Fanueal hall tonight. What is going on in Boston later on? Just three of us, all over 21, looking to have some fun. Let me know if there are any cool bands or trivia nights going on!

OK, I'm sure many of you read the news as obsessively as me, but this one is too damn good to NOT share with as many people as possible. And this way, if anyone knows anything further, they can toss it out into the mix:
El Pelon might possibly maybe be coming back sometime?! |

| (no subject) |
[Nov. 20th, 2009|09:40 pm] |
So in August I moved into an older 3-unit house (middle floor) in the Brighton Centerish area. When we moved in, we found some rodent poison under the radiators/behind the stove and some traps under the sink. I didn't think much of it- we live in a city, there are mice, no big deal/whatever.
We haven't seen any rodents, nothing has been in any traps, and we haven't found any poops anywhere. Awesome, right? The first few months passed without incident, however with the colder weather approaching, we have noticed that there are things living in our walls. We haven't determined what exactly they are (they sound way too big to be mice... they scurry around quickly, make a lot of chirping noises, and make rapid thumping noises like bunnies) but they make a ton of noise. We can hear them running, thumping, and scratching in pretty much every room of the apartment. They are in the walls and the ceilings and it seems like they never stop. We've tried banging on the walls but the bastards are fearless.
Do you think I should bring this issue up to my landlord? Let's say he doesn't care,do I have any legal recourse in the matter? He's this little old Italian man and I get the feeling like he's going to take the "oh well, what are you going to do?" approach to the situation (when I asked if we could get a cat, he told me "NO ANIMALS, they smell, you make bambinos instead" to give you an idea of what he's like), but it is kind of gross/annoying. I have allergic asthma and have been feeling particularly under the weather for no reason lately so I'm starting to worry that the unknown animals are pooping in my lungs while I sleep or something. |

| Question for T-savvy travelers |
[Nov. 20th, 2009|07:53 pm] |
Hullo. I have a question about getting to Logan via T.
I'll be coming in from the red line, and I was wondering if it's better to transfer to the green line at Park Street, get on the blue line at Gov't Center, and get off at the airport station OR just get off at South Station and take the silver line shuttle?
Is the silver line a bus, or a subway service? The massport website says one thing and MBTA.com says another.
One big thing is that I'm flying the day before Thanksgiving, and it's going to be pure madness. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks folks.
Edit: Silver line wins by a landslide. Thanks everyone! |

| Grub Street question |
[Nov. 20th, 2009|01:14 pm] |
Have any of you been involved with or taken classes with Grub Street, Inc.?
http://www.grubstreet.org/
What can you tell me about it? Or rather, what can you tell me about your personal experience working for/studying with/networking thru/doing whatever with Grub Street Inc?
Admittedly, I'm in a slump life-wise and sometimes I write so someone told me to check them out, is how I found out about them. |
