| Let Tim Bee know how you feel! |
[18 Jul 2008|11:42am] |
The Republican ideal is supposedly for there to be no external costs or transfer payments, with everyone paying his own way.
In that spirit, if you were caught on one side of Tucson or the other due to the closure of Swan from Davis Monthan all the way up past River on Thursday evening and Friday morning, call the Tim Bee campaign at 520-979-8667 and ask them to write you a check.

| Film In Tucson July 4th |
[04 Jul 2008|08:18am] |
Today, There will be a public showing of a film about Ammon Hennacy at Dry River (SE corner Main & 4th Ave) during the kickoff evening of the Southwest Catholic Worker gathering. Learn about the history of Catholic Worker communities (like Casa Maria in Tucson) and, specifically, about Ammon who lived a bit of his life right here in Arizona. At 7:00, guest speaker Erica Dahl-Bredine will talk about her experiences growing up in a Worker community, then the movie will show at 8:00.
A PEACE OF THE ANARCHY AMMON HENNACY and OTHER ANGELIC TROUBLEMAKERS in the USA
Followed by discussion with filmmaker Marcus Page.
A Peace of the Anarchy is a quick summary of 20th century radical activism in the USA with a notable focus on the pacifist christian anarchist Ammon Hennacy. Folks from the War Resisters League, the IWW, Earth First! and the Catholic Worker, along with Mr. Hennacy exemplify the marginalized prophetic witness for peace and justice in the USA as they attempt to appeal to the dominant culture. These people speak on the benefits of anarchy and peace, following the radical (rooted/basically grounded) ideology and optimism that goodness will overcome evil, love is superior to hate and truth trumps falsehood. 69 minutes

| AFSC is Moving-Can You Help? |
[26 Jun 2008|08:57am] |
American Friend's Service Committee-Tucson Office
AFSC is on the move again! Call 623-9141 if you have time in the next few weeks to help out.
Fortunately, we aren't moving far. We're literally moving next door. Another suite (#111) in the building has opened up and has more space for us to spread out. Our move-in date is July 15.
But the new space needs some serious TLC and that unique AFSC home-decorating touch. In other words, we need volunteers to help us paint, pack, and move.
Benefits: * Air conditioning * Good company * Frosty beverages * Our undying love
Here's the schedule:
Weekend of 6/28 Paint the rest of the new office
Week of 7/1 Packing up the old office
Weekend of 7/5 MOVE
Weekend of 7/12 Finish move, clean old office
If you would like to help us out with ANY part of this process, we would be eternally grateful. Please send me an email letting me know what days/times you are available. We'll send additional announcements before each major workday, just in case you need a reminder.
We are a non-profit and can take people who need to work off community service hours.
We are also in need of:
* Dollies or any other wheeled contraption with which to transfer heavier items from one space to the other * Ladders-the taller the better * Paint rollers, pans, and long handles * Fans

[12 Apr 2008|07:53am] |
TODAY APRIL12 '08 Global Human Rights Torch Relay - Tucsonans will come together to raise awareness of China's human rights abuses before the 2008 Olympics and urge positive change by the Chinese regime. There will be a torch relay, a torch walk, a torch ceremony, speakers, musicians, informational displays and petitions. Hosting the Olympics is an honor few nations are granted. China was awarded the honor of hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics-with the provision that it would improve its human rights record ahead of the Games. According to Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, Reporters Without Borders, and the UN, the Chinese government has increased its human rights abuses considerably. We believe this effort can save lives, and invite all to join us.Gather at Soccer Field for 3 mile walk on Walkway. Gathering with Torch Ceremony, musicians, speakers and displays at Ramada #5 and surrounding area. Walk begins at 8:00 a.m. Gathering from 9:00 a.m. to noon. 8 am - 12 pm. Reid Park.

| Advice, please? |
[12 Mar 2008|10:51am] |
My partner and I are currently living in Kansas City, Missouri. I grew up here, my partner grew up in Florida. We're looking to move somewhere west of here, but aren't really sure where to go. We'd like to live in a place that is more progressive than the Midwest, politically and socially. We are an interracial couple and we'd like to live somewhere that we can feel supported and accepted. My partner is also transitioning (ftm) and so we'd like to live in a place that is supportive and accepting of transgender issues. We don't make a lot of money (I'm in higher ed and my partner is a writer), so we need to live in a city where the cost of living isn't incredibly high. We were originally planning to move to Oregon (Portland or Eugene) but the cost of living is so high there, it just isn't feasible.
Right now we're looking at Tucson or the Phoenix area. I would be really grateful if you could give me some insider's information on the two areas, and which one you think might be a better fit for us. The Phoenix area looks better to me in terms of job opportunities (they have a lot of colleges/universities) but Tucson seems to be a better fit for us otherwise. Any suggestions or advice you can give would be really helpful. Thanks!

| Tucson: Protest march and rally in support of the people of Gaza |
[27 Jan 2008|01:05pm] |
(excerpted from email invitation)
Join this protest march & rally in support of the people of Gaza Monday, January 28: 9am: Gather on NW corner of the UA mall 12pm: March from the UA Mall 1pm: Rally, Federal Bldg., Downtown Tucson
*We ask that you wear black in solidarity with the residents of Gaza.
From today through Jan. 29 alone, people in dozens of cities across the U.S. are organizing themselves in protest of Israel's blockade of Gaza, begun on Thursday, Jan. 17, that has been wreaking economic strangulation upon its inhabitants. The citizens of Gaza, enclosed in the precarious borderlands maintained by the Israeli govt., are dependent on the fuel, electricity and goods to which Israel controls access. Collective punishment of civilian populations, among other aspects of U.S.-backed Israeli policies such as resettlement of occupied territories, torture, unlawful deportation and indiscriminant killing, is explicitly illegal under the 4th Geneva Convention which Israel ratified on 6 July, 1951 (Amnesty International Report, 12/5/01).
Israeli officials denied the label of "collective punishment" to their actions, but claimed that Israel is only using this new sanctions policy to "convince" Gazans to stop militants from firing rockets into Israel (New York Times, 1/23/08). Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in his address at the 8th annual Herzilya Conference yesterday (Jan. 23) explained that Israel would not cease its efforts of "influencing the quality of life of [Gaza's] residents", in order to "strike at the terrorist leaders in the Gaza Strip" (Israeli News Agency, 1/23/08). In defending his country's actions before the array of condemnations from the international community--including the European Union (which pays for the fuel that Israel allows Gaza), itself describing Israel's actions as "collective punishment" of the Gazan population (New York Times, 1/23/08),--Olmert stated that "there is no justification for demanding we allow residents of Gaza to live normal lives while shells and rockets are fired from their streets and courtyards at Sderot and other communities in the south" (Haaretz, 1/23/08).
*Join us as we demand a "normal life" for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, an end to the U.S.-Israeli occupation, and a call to the United States and Israel to agree to countless UN resolutions supported overwhelmingly by the international community.
Please forward this urgent action very widely, to anyone you think might be interested.

| Sign the Petition from Citizens for Fair Election Coverage! |
[14 Jan 2008|11:05pm] |
This will take only a few minutes and please be sure to forward to your lists:
FOR WIDE DISTRIBUTION
We, the People, are taking our presidential elections back. Corporate control of the media is one issue. Corporate media control of the information that is allowed to reach American citizens is much more dangerous, much more sinister, and much more un-American.
When 'big media' exert their unbridled control over what Americans can see, hear, and read, then the Constitutional power and right of the citizens to vote is being hijacked by multi-billion dollar corporations that want the votes to go their way.
We will not allow weapons maker GE (parent of NBC), corporate media (ABC/Disney, CNN, The Des Moines Register) or the insurance industry (AARP) to choose the next President of the United States. Each of these corporations has chosen to eliminate candidates from national television debates to protect their interests and limit our choices. By 'blacking out' dissenting opinion from the debates they are deliberately interfering with our Constitutional voting rights.
Sign the petition at: Copy and Paste http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/2008Debates/index.html

| Ride the Peace Bus |
[17 Nov 2007|09:48am] |
ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 RIDE IN THE BUS AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROTEST AGAINST TORTURE AT FORT HUACHUCA
(They will stop in TUCSON and pick up more people)
The End the War Coalition invites you to our 2nd monthly Iraq Moratorium, a national action held on the third Friday of every month to bring awareness of the growing opposition to the occupation in Iraq.
We ask everyone to make a commitment one day per month to speak out and be visible about ending this illegal occupation NOW.
The Yellow Rose of Texas Peace Bus with Jim Goodnow and Rick Burnley join us in our protest.
Jim Goodnow will be speaking about his past 22 months traveling the country for peace. Rick Burnley will recite some of his own activist poetry which earned him the name ‘The Poet Laureate of Camp Casey’ by Cindy Sheehan. Live music by the protest folk duo Dakota and the Black River Bandit. Don’t miss this fun opportunity to meet two committed activists as they discuss their lives fighting the good fight for peace and justice.
On Sunday RIDE THE YELLOW ROSE TO SIERRA VISTA
Fort Huachuca military base located in Sierra Vista, Arizona houses one of the military’s most inexcusable secrets: intelligence training that fosters the use of torture. Join us as we gather together with demonstrators from all across the southwest at the main gate to Fort Huachuca, and protest the immorality, inhumanity and unconstitutional act of torture. Torture by U.S. military personnel is a true evil that has horrified people across the world. Show that Americans have not traded our humanity and given in to Bush’s teachings of fear. Torture is wrong and it must stop. Torture has been proven to be an ineffective tool in gathering truth and hurts both prisoners and interrogators alike.
Please make your reservation on the Peace Bus today.
The Yellow Rose leaves from the Arizona Institute for Peace Education & Research at 2510 South Rural Road in Tempe on Sunday, November 18th at 7:00 a.m. Continental breakfast will be served on the bus. The Fort Huachuca protest is scheduled for 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The bus will return everyone to AIPER in the evening.
Ride tickets are $10.00.
