OMG!! The boys from the USMNT won an award at this year's ESPY's. "Best Upset" for our kick ass defeat of the numero uno team, Spain during the Confederations Cup.

To win, we (they) beat other noms, Mine That Bird (50-1 shot to win the Kentucky Derby), Oregon State (beatin #1 ranked USC last fall) and Tampa Bay Rays. The win, of course, was all thanks to online poll voting so go fans!

some pics from thier big night beneath the cut

And here's what the home page looks like right now:

Permanent URL is http://caseybrienza.com
(Feel free to link at will.)

Anyway, it's my first website since college, and needless to say, I'd forgotten how badly I suck at scripting even the most basic of .html. Right now, it's just a glorified (and extremely abbreviated) CV. (One-stop shopping for online stalkers, if you know what I mean.) It may become more someday...but, umm, don't hold your breath. >_<

So how's it look? ^_^;

I remember back in 2000, there was this story about a woman who consulted in black magic to make herself look gorgeous under one condition: she cannot look at her own reflection in the mirror. So when she got all the attention that she wanted, she got curious and broke the rule and because of doing so, she was cursed to having a life of being uber fugly than she actually was. When she tried to get her beauty back, some uncle bomoh told her that it would only be possible if she sucked the blood of a hundred virgins or something like that. Thus began the story of the Hantu Kum Kum. The witch who cannot pronounce Assalamualaikum properly when she wants to go into the house of a Muslim family and suck the hell of their virgin daugthers.

Back when i was in Primary 6, parents were so afraid of this Kum Kum Witch that they would personally fetch their daughters after school and newspaper articles on this Kum Kum Bitch were a common sight in classroom notice boards. I guess lately pun nowadays most minahreps also non virgin already. Always getting gangbanged in public toilets and recording them proudly on .3gp handphones, i guess the Hantu Kum Kum also give up already.

However this year, another Witch decided to prowl the Singaporean heartlands again with another scare. Her own twisted idea of Being Successful in Business Marketing. Only did it reach my ears today about this woman who goes door-to-door, particularly Muslim houses, selling her keropok (crackers) and if you reject her, she'll unleash a Pontianak to haunt you house. I don't know how nice her Keropok is or whether she's selling Doritos or Lays but netizens have highlighted that her keropok has a rotten stench to it, which repels her customers from buying her product, hence, a reason for her to unleash her Pontianak into your house.

Frankly, i find this story a little hard to believe. Firstly, why target Muslims only? I know lah Pontianak is a malay ghost but once in awhile, reach out to the Chinese and Indians la. We malays are only a minority race in Singapore. How to expand ur keropok business if you keep targetting Malay families only.

Secondly, if every family who rejects your keropok, you unleash a Pontianak, how many Pontianaks do you have? You think pokemon is it, keep inside pocket then happily release at your own free will?

Lastly is the theory that this woman, out of nowhere, starts her door-to-door business at Woodlands and suddenly now she decides to come to Tampines. Like, what a leap!! My only rationale i can think of right now is: She earned just enough money from her sales in Woodlands that she wants to come to Tampines 1 to shop at UNIQLO since its the ONLY shop in Singapore located at Tampines. Please, i know Singapore is undergoing and ageing population but wouldnt it be better if this bitch just applied for a job at macdonalds or something? Lagi mulia and can ask her whole Pontianak army to help out at Macdonalds. Mcdelivery no need rider anymore, ask her pontianak to send out the deliveries. Nabeh.

I really pity those Walls Ice Cream door-to-door kids who try to make an honest living selling ice cream door to door and here comes this old bitch who cuts the competition by making people scared to open their doors to potential salesmen. My whole family is now living in fear of answering the door after getting news of this Nenek Keropok. Great balls of fury. My country is forever packed with bullshit stories seriously. If this woman harass you with underquality product, go call Case lah.

Sheesh

Before you throw shoes at my head, hear me out.

Perez Hilton was blogging that actors have to stay in the closet to be working actors. Well, that is not exactly true. Last Sunday, Outfest 2009 premiered "Bitches, Buttholes, and BFFs". The shortfilm "Lushes" is a part of that series. For those not in the loop, "Lushes" is a movie about
Cork (Ash Christian) & Desi (Parker Torres), two of Tinseltown's most 'Transtastic' transplants, are trying to make a name for themselves in the world of Hollywood drag queens. It isn't until their arch-nemesis, Hollywood's #1 queen, Basil (Cheeks), sabotages their friendship that they realize they're meant to be best friends forever and what it takes to create the most talked about drag number the Valley has ever seen. --Source.

"Lushes" is a film with an entire cast of openly gay actors.

We need to SPAM Perez Hilton asking him to do some press for "Lushes". Send E-mail and/or Tweets including links to the film with all correspondence. Even the official "Lushes" Facebook is in on this:

Lushes Movie Hey all you fellow trannys....remember that tonight is the last night you will get to see "Lushes" at Outfest. Also if you think Lushes/Cheeks should get a shout out on Perez Hilton blow that bitch's email up Perez@PerezHilton.com xoxo diva's!!!

Some of us have seen this movie and it is SO MUCH FUN. We also met some of the cast and they are REALLY nice people. For those in LA or surrounding areas, make a dash to DGA and go get your ticket to watch "Lushes" at Regency Fairfax today at 6:30pm. Today is the last day of screening.

There you go! Spam away!

Must not Squeal. Must not Squeal. Must not Squeal.

ok. give up, squeal all you want.

Me and [info]sheepgeek went and saw Harry Potter last night. Wow. It was freaking amazing. Beautifully filmed, beautifully acted, just wow. And don't get me started on Draco Malfoy. [info]sheepgeek kept commenting on the suit. the black suit they show him wearing in the previews. She even admitted he looked good, which she's NEVER done. lol. I say, go see it. It's nearly three hours, but worth it, and the end is perfectly set up for the last (two) films.

I'll post more later, I want to give you time to see it before I go mad with spoilers.

How do you tell someone you love they're making the biggest mistake of their life?

Would you tell them?

You wouldn't want to ruin their happiness, but there are things in life that deserve careful thought... especially something as delicate as marriage.

My parents knew each other for less than 6 months before they decided to run off to Vegas and get married. My Dad had just signed up for the Army and he jokingly told my Mom - "Hey, if you want me to come back. You have to give me a good reason" and so, they were married. After bootcamp, six months later they had a church wedding at St. Basil's Church and about a year later they got married again in civil court. They married 3 times in a span of a year. Then, they renewed their vows on their 25th wedding anniversary and just this past May(had my Mom not passed) they would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary.

My parents are the exception.

Not all couples are as fortunate as they are/were.

I know just seeing it with my two eyes doesn't make me an expert, but I can't help but question a rash decision, when I've had the absolute pleasure of living with the perfect example of love and marriage all my life.

Here are some of the things that my grandma babbles all day in an unintentional belittling of my maid for unforseen reasons:

'.. agak kau suka konek besar, agak kau suka konek kecik..' and '... nonok nonok nonok, kepala buto pun kau suka...'

and i seem to wonder how the hell does my maid put up with these condescending insults.

Anyways, i finally resigned from the airport cargo job, where 95% of its employees are matreps with dyed hairs, pierced lips and one hell of an attitude problem. There was this collegue of mine, a much senior chubby guy who has constantly been looking out for me since i started working with the company, had just bought himself a new touchscreen phone. It was a Samsung Pixon phone if i'm not mistaken. Anyways, i decided to sit down for a little while and let him show me the marvels of his new phone like a little child hyperventilating over a new toy.

Intrigued, i took the phone into my own hands and decided to test the quality of its camera. As i was browsing through his photo gallery, it initially seemed normal with the first few pictures being of his family and friends (that includes me of course. heh) and when i reached the 8th or 9th picture, i was greeted with this picture of a nude malay woman with her legs spread wide and her fingers pointing towards her clearly unshaven (insert a family friendly word for vagina here) and i swear for a moment there i wanted to throw the phone onto the wall there and then because i clearly did not see that coming. Returned him his phone and i asked him who or what was that in the picture, he said it was this girl he slept with or something. W-O-A-H.

(okay truth is, upon much interrogation, turns out those nude women photos are taken off some sggirls site or something and he keeps them there for his sexual fantasies or whatever that doesnt concern any of us)

The point is, i'm finally saying goodbye to these people whom i have grown accustomed to as my friends. The people who blantantly lie to their fiances about working late when they're cheating on them behind their backs. The people who share with me their stories about being laid in the KTV lounges and giving me information on massage parlours with 'special services'. The people who blasts techno music in the wee early hours of the morning to make work a little more cheerful. All these, i said my goodbye to. Surely i will miss working there but i know that i cant stay there forever. As much fun as those stories sound, i can never see myself being one of them. Hence, this is where i eventually say goodbye. :')

Oh and as i left my workplace to clock-out for the final time, i finally found out that the acronym ttyl does not mean 'Talk To You Later' in matrep terms, it just means 'Tetek You Lazat'. Wow, what a compliment. Nyeh.

bye

I feel I must formally announce this: I'm not attending school this semester. It's not because I'm lazy, either.

Seriously. In about a week from now, I will be undergoing surgery on my foot, because of a condition I have, Plantar fasciitis. In short, it's a very painful inflamatory conditon of the foot caused by excessive wear to the plantar fascia or plantar aponeurosis that supports the arches of the foot. I've been in on and off pain for nearly three years, and while I have good insurance, I still have to throw some money into it, so, I'm planning on returning to MGCCC - JD spring semester.

That essentially means that I have, officially, no excuse not to comment on your journals. I'll be off work for three weeks recovering.

In other news, [info]sheepgeek and I will be going to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in roughly nine hours and twenty minutes. YAY!!!

That being the good news, the bad news is this: One of my favorite bands, Panic! At the Disco are no longer together. On the upside, muh bb, Brendan Urie and his band mate Spencer are going to continue on with the same name. Already their shit is looking up. Not that all of Pretty Odd was bad. Seriously. I liked 'Nine in the Afternoon'. A lot. I sort of liked it's feel. It was like trapped inbetween Fever and pretty odd. The demo you can hear on their site is almost like thier old stuff, which is how I liked them.

Not much else to say, but to check out the links I posted in the previous entry. Seriously, peeps, I need followers on my Daily Booth. I get lonely over there.

14 July 2009 @ 03:26 am

Finally got a good sleep. Only to be woken up my the phone. Was having a weird ass dream about all these people that were on a search to prove that Michael Jackson was innocent. I was there but I think I was someone else... We were walking through woods and weird places... Met these weird guys in thongs and walked through a hall where babies were hung from chairs on the ceiling and were gonna be killed... The some of the kids that were with our group were in the chairs and were all bloody... And there were a bunch of animals with us... Smokie, my exs old pitbull Bandit, some beagle named "Beagle" & another cat or so. My biggest concern was making sure the animals were okay and that they were all following us. Oh yeah and my mom's pomeranian was there too. I lost Smokie at one point when we were in a grocery store so I went down into the basement and then found her and there were dead and dying animals down there. A box of kittens, grown cats, green eclectus parrots that were dead,a fox with its head in a hole throuh the cement that was dead. the cats and kittens were the only alive. Thats when I was woken up. I think Smokie had the same dream because she came over and was licking me like crazy when I woke.

I hate when people are so closed minded and snobby about music. Put almost any genre of music in front of me and I will genuinely enjoy it. Except for rap. I doubt I will ever get into rap. I dont see much creativity in it. And it makes my ears puke. Sorry, dont mean to offend. But the bands that played with In This Moment on Sat are a type of music I do not normally listen to and I really enjoyed it...Who knew that I would ever like screamo or hardcore or whatever it was. lol Of course I am a metalhead at heart and ebm/industrial makes my soul happy but it is cool to listen to other music once in a while too.

Apparently Aiden cover "Die Die My Darling" If they had played that on Sat I would have gone crazy. I love the Misfits! Last.fm describes Aiden as "horror punk"... Well no wonder I liked them. lol. ...tagged with "emocore" lol... honestly I dont know what emo music exactly is. What bands are considered emo?

About to resize my Big Day Out pics. Sadly I have no more pics from the Saturday show because of memory card problems. Photoshop is being so fucking slow to resize these damn pics! Not even half done! I should restart comp but I hate waiting. I know my pics from last night suck but its hard to get a good pic when you are not stage side. Im gonna post them in a sec. I really really wish my memory card hadnt failed for the In This Moment/ Aiden show. I had 5 available pics and saved them all for ITM. Can usually get amazing pics at Northern Lights. I am so sad =( I had Aiden right in front of me. Plus would have loved to take video of ITM.

I want to be a merch girl. Or a roadie but I am not strong enough. lol. Actually what I would really love to do is live music photography. Ive been doing it non professionally since I was like 14.

Listening to William Control (side project from the Aiden vocalist). I like this. Kinda electro. You know I love my electro. Sounds a bit 80's new wave.

Down have a Twitter. I wonder if Phil Anselmo writes it? lol I cant imagine. There is only one update anyway.

Where: Director's Guild of America, Los Angeles
When: 12 July 2009, Sunday
What: Outfest 2009

It was fun volunteering, albeit a bit tiring... being on your feet a lot of the time. And on your butt for most of it. Call me crazy but I had fun counting tickets, checking bags, distributing/collecting ballots and pencils. Haha, considering I was a bit under the weather yesterday, I survived a diet of grapes, a bottle of orange Vitamin Water, and 3 bottles of Smart Water. Yes, that's about what I ate after 2:30pm. Alcohol was a hairbreadth away but I'm a few months short of 21. Boo!

Anyway, it was nice to get out of the house and do something on my own. (Going to the mall with the 'family' does not count.) I had purpose, as cliche as it sounds. I was part of something. And I met new people. It was a totally new experience for me and I truly had fun.

(LOL, 50% of the people there figured out I'm straight. The other 50% need to tweak their gaydars haha. I fessed up anyway.)

But I was really looking forward to meeting the Peeps. And of course, Cheeks himself! When 8:30pm came, I kept an eye open for them... I didn't know how I would spot them but I still looked. My shift was just finishing a ballot count, things were dying down again in preparation for the "Bitches, Buttholes, and BFFs" screening when I spotted whom I thought was Jam, one of the Peeps. She was pretty easy to spot in her aqua colored dress. (I remember picking it from her photobucket haha.) Good thing she was headed for the restroom so I headed over there as well. Also met Jam's friend from college, Lucy.

We then met with Jo outside. I actually saw her in the restroom but didn't know it was Jo. LOL. Anyway... after huge hugs from both Jam and Jo, I got my bearhug from Cheeks! *squee* I saw him from afar and I was like, "Lord, please don't make me forget my English." HAHA. He was wearing the Libra necklace Raven gave him.  (Yes, Raven is the one who won the Cheektini contest.) I don't think I was tongue-tied, I mean I wasn't shy or anything. I just... didn't know what to say! Such a dork! Hahaha. For some seconds, all I could say was "OMG." Total fangirly moment! HAHA.

He thought my nails rocked. I'm happy! The hard work has paid off. LOL. Right then and there, I decided to clock out from my shift so I can spend time with them. After all, I did my share of 6 hours. Cheeks told me to find him after I clock out. I left my stuff at the station and donned my jacket to cover up the volunteer shirt. I didn't exactly spot Cheeks from the crowd... I actually saw Jam. It's difficult to not spot her haha. Love it!  Cheeks introduced us to his friends Ashley, Parker, et al.

Anyway, it was funny how we got a full body pic of Cheeks. A cute story! Jo asked us if we're good with a digital camera. Tania (she won the shirt design contest) said she is and then Jo said it was to get a full body photo. And then everyone went, "Oh yeah", "Oh I'll take a picture too"," Oh YEAH". Cheeks said, "Ooooh-kay. I got four different tones of 'oh yeah'. Something must be up..." We just kept talking... yes, ignored what he said. (I went over to attach myself on his hip. That was pretty much all I could do at that point. Idk what came over me lol.)

He then asked, "Soooo... where do you want me to stand?" And again, there was no answer! LOL. Or I was too distracted to realize there was. Anyways, next thing I knew he went off to greet some friends. I saw an iMac console and tried to log-in to the chatroom but no go. When I got back to the group, Cheeks was introducing the Peeps to Nick Sweet! (OMG, he so cute in person. LOL. What is with me and gay guy crushes haha.) Nick is the "British" guy from the Cheeks sex tape. Then all 5 of us: Jam, Jo, Tania, Lucy, and myself, took that full body photos that were "needed". *winkwink*

We then went to the Lushes pre-screening party at the DGA Atrium. (Earlier, they were playing Glee's version of "Don't Stop Believin'"... some of use were singing along haha.) I thought they wouldn't let me in - because I'm 20 going on 15 appearance-wise - but they saw the VOLUNTEER on my shirt (forgot to zip my jacket all the way up) and they didn't even think twice. More pics were taken... it was awesome that there were Peeps from both coasts of the USA there. We were introduced (again) to Parker, the actor who played Desi (the blond) in "Lushes". Once again, he's cuter in person. LMAO. They were all so nice!

Jo "stole" Cheeks' vodka cranberry drink. LMAO. Not that either of them needed more alcohol. He asked her to tweet it but Jo was too far gone so I tweeted it. (Yes, I took responsibility of the official twitterer of the bunch.  After all, I had a reputation to maintain haha.  If only AT&T signal is better at the DGA.)  Jo downed the drink at the hallway before going into the theatre.  Haha!

(I'm not going to talk about "Bitches, Buttholes, and BFFs" right now because there's one more screening this Wednesday.)

Jam... is AWESOME.  Awesome.  She has street teaming down to a science.  You cannot say no to her.  I sat outside DGA1 wating for the others to come out of the theater.  Cheeks found me there... got another hug!  His performance in Lushes was sooooo darn good!  LOL, good thing I just spritzed on some cologne and stupid me, I couldn't remember where I got it when he asked what cologne it was.  (For some reason, I cannot remember "Bath and Body Works".  I always say "Bed, Bath, and Beyond".  Just goes to show which stores I frequent.)  How I wish it were Herbal Essences as he first guessed.  (LOL, it's the first time a guy sniffed me.  OMG, I didn't just say that, did I?)  Anyhoo, we all met up again outside the DGA.  Sadly, I couldn't go to the afterparty.  *it sucks being underage*

Jam drove me home.  *hugs her*  It was soooooo nice talking to her.  I had a TON of fun last night. Thank you so much, Cheeks for bringing us Peeps all together.

I am soooo ready to do it all over again this Wednesday!

Pictures!

PS: Sorry if my posts seem rambley or dont make sense in the context they are in. It is me copy and pasting them from Twitter. I tweet all day even by text message so when I post them all at once it probably doesnt often make a lot of sense. But since LoudTwitter doesnt exist anymore I still want to keep track of my life on LJ so that is why I do it. It is better this way anyway because I can separate things into paragraphs.

SATURDAY:

What are these bands: Aiden, Curse The Mariner, The Designer Drugs? Sounds emo-y or hardcore :-/ They are also playing tonight. Maybe I should have arranged to go to the show later. I have a feeling I will not like those bands much.

Wow dude best show EVER. New biggest fan of AIDEN. Totally was grabbed by the vocalist. Not drunk enough or i would have went & met them. Maria Brink is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life. In This Moment was amazing!!!!! Maria makes me proud to be an upstate NY girl =) I totally should have chatted up this dude from Aiden (bass player). He was drinkin at the bar like 2 stools down and I knew he must be from a band because he was fucking hot and all tattooed and gorgeous. He was sitting all alone for a long ass time too. Sigh. I should have drank more. lol. I had 3 wild turkeys & coke and a beer but I didnt get all that buzzed. I was just drinking at the bar for a long time because it was all like lil hardcore kids for the first few bands and I felt out of place. lol. And my new memory card for my camera wasnt working!!!!! So I could only take 4 pics!!!!!!!! I could have gotten some wonderful Aiden pics. The beautiful tattooed boy was a foot away. And of course I got to touch the Aiden vocalist quite well =D. All the girls looked on in jealousy! He grabbed my head- I grabbed his thigh! Im sorry Aiden vocalist. I feel I molested you. That bass player was sexy. He saw me seeing him and saw me seeing him again when they were playing and said hello. I am such a groupie. I probably lost 20 pounds from jumping and headbanging. Maria was so cute. Shes from Albany so she had friends and family there. She shouted out to her mom. And now I have to go to bed soon because I have to get up tomorrow for another big day of rock n roll! Oh yeah and apparently this show only happened because some band members were not allowed in Canada on Warped Tour cuz of criminal records. So YAY for criminal records! Man, I need to go to shows like everyday. As you can see they make me immensely happy. As do hot tattooed band boys. It is great to be a girl at a rock/ metal show. But it is even better to be a child. This one kid got all the attention. lol Man, how can I go to sleep now when I am all fired up? Guess I wont get much sleep before Big Day Out. No way it will be as cool as tonight. I need a rockstar boyfriend. Now please. Im meant to be a chick on the side of the stage. Hell, I already am one. lol Sigh.. How am I so man crazy yet so adamant about being single? Guess because there are no sexy musicians around here.... First time I heard In This Moment was January 1st of this year. I remember it well. It was a Tussin night...right after getting in from downtown. And I KNEW that this band would be a major part of my new year. And they have been. Here's my few pics I was able to take: http://twitpic.com/a3nv8 ~ http://twitpic.com/a3nwf ~ http://twitpic.com/a3nxo

SUNDAY:

I was in bad shape all night. Throwing up a million times and shaking. I cant drink whiskey like I used to. Only slept a couple hours. I doubt Ill feel like drinking anything at today's show. So tired that my eyes are tearing. And least Im not hungover. I dont think I get hangovers. I just throw up for several hours. lol I guess maybe thats a hangover idk...

Going to Big Day Out in an hour. The bands are Staind, Halestorm, Shinedown, the Offspring, Chevelle, Sum 41. Seen the first 3 before.

Halestorm were amazing. Sum41 were funny. Lot of mohawk boys here. I like. Offspring were awesome. Yay 90s music! Chevelle & Shinedown were good. Staind are next then i rest! I am dead.

OMG best Staind show ever! Aaron sat on a stool in the middle of the crowd and did "Outside" and "Its Been a While" acoustic. I have videos. They the did "Mudshovel" last and everyone ran to the front. I finally perked up during that song & went crazy. I fucking LOVE that song. I remember being 16 and walking through my mom's neighborhood with @kyliesays and screaming out "MUDSHOVELLLLLLL!!!" Oh how the time passes! lol. Yeah and I cant get through a Staind show without tears. But it wasnt sadness for the first time ever. It was happiness & accomplishment. A year ago at the Staind show I cried during every song because I was so unhappy. Now today I cried because I have come so far. I have completed my circle. Maybe it is now time for something new to begin. I love you Staind & Aaron Lewis. 10 year fan. Doesnt seem it could have been that long but it has. And Halestorm are AMAZING. The voice is incredible! Like you wouldnt believe. It was also really cool to see the Offspring. I had forgotten how much I actually like them. The "intermission" was funny. And I didnt drink. I wanted to desperately because it makes a show so mkuch more enjoyable but my belly still felt funny. And I was dead tired the whole day until Mudshovel came on. I was even too tired to go look for hot boys. And there were a lot. I also give props to the singer of Shinedown. He came out into the audience as well. I had pretty good seats actually. I normally dont like getting seats & prefer lawn because it is more of a fun crowd experience... But my seats today were really good so it was okay. Especially since I was so tired and could sit in between bands. SPAC's prices are outrageous though. $4 for water/soda. $9 for a piece of pizza. $12 for beer. I was not into the local band that won the local band challenge. Rapcore. I know my local bands and there are some great ones out there.

Hopefully Friday I am going to Summer Slaughter. Saturday = hardcore, Sunday = rock and Friday = death metal. Boy, am I eclectic! lmao!

I love this song, I think it was originally sang by Don McLean. It's such a beautiful song. Joanna Wang covered the song and it's just as beautiful.

Since LJ won't let me un-italicize, I have to post a new entry.

"Starry starry night, paint your palete blue and gray. Look out on a summer's day, with eyes that know the darkness in my soul. Shadows on the hills, sketch the trees and daffodils, catch the breeze and winter chills in the colors of the snoy lined land. Now I understand what you tried to say to me. How you suffered for your sanity, how you tried to set them free. They would not listen, they would not know how. Perhaps they'll listen now."

I sat sweating at an alarming rate for a couple hours in my sauna - er, apartment - just to see how long I could stand it. Then I took a nice cold shower because my hot water doesn't work, and now I smell great. I'd say it's a very distinctively feminine smell with the occasional whiff of Old Spice deodorant. I'm sure the (ineffective!) whitening body wash and Tsubaki hair treatment I use contribute to the pleasantness of my smell but I am quite enjoying it right now.

Last night I downloaded "The Haunted House" by Pyha, who was 12 at the time of its recording. Turns out it's the creepiest album ever made, almost an hour of horrible and bleak noises including the one sound that freaks me out more than anything - DEATH RATTLE.

I can't pinpoint what it is, maybe it's Ju-On (aka The Grudge) and all those things that make it so terrifying, but I can't deal with the fact that humans have a swan song and make horrible noises while they die. A prolonged death rattle is basically the scariest sound in the world and even thinking about it really puts me off somehow.

...

anyway I have a Couchsurfer coming tomorrow. This is him in case he loses it and kills me. His name is Evan Price.

The quiet demise of Shojo Beat.
A reader of this blog sent me the following question a couple of days ago:
Do you know anything about why VIZ shut down Shojo Beat and why it was done so hastily and hush-hush? I just looked for news articles about it on Google News and found virtually nothing.

Now, I know there was a lot of blogosphere buzz when the demise of Shojo Beat was first announced, and I saw no reason to chime in at the time because quite frankly the writing was on the wall as early as 2007, but I suppose it still may be worth telling the story as I perceive it. Please bear in mind that although I have friends who work for Viz in various capacities, I do not have privileged knowledge of the publisher's inner workings (with the single exception that I disclose below).

Let's start with the original Japanese context of manga magazines: In Japan, manga magazines are bald promotional material for their publishers. They advertise the publishers' products, they drum up buzz for new campaigns, they're a place to test out new content, etc. What they do not is make Tons 'o Money for publishers. At best, profit margins are razor thin. Tankoubon sales are where the "real" (but generally not lavish...remember that these are book publishers) profits are to be had.

Magazine sales in the United States work differently. Often low-cost subscription-driven, they do ideally make money for their publishers--in the form of advertising revenue solicited and acquired from entities that are not the publisher. Cigarette ads in Vogue, as a hypothetical example (though many magazines no longer carry cigarette ads on moral principle). In other words, the money coming from you the reader is not what makes U.S. magazine publishers money. They make money by selling your eyeballs to their advertisers. The rates, of course, that they can charge are dependent upon their circulations numbers a.k.a. the number of pairs of eyeballs they attract.

In an ideal world, manga magazines published in the United States would function according to the U.S. model of magazine sales: The content--in this case serialized and/or one-off manga titles--would attract enough eyeballs every month to interest potential advertisers and justify ad sales at a profitable rate.

Unfortunately, the fate of almost every manga magazine published in the U.S. has instead been the following: Sales start out reasonably strong and then start to drop off. Readers start losing interest in ongoing titles and stop subscribing, while proportionally fewer new readers take up the magazine once a serialization is in mid-stream.* The publisher is then faced with a dilemma. Does it maintain the status quo in order to please those few devoted readers it has left? Or does it revise the content--switching out old serials for newer ones, experimenting with new content, etc.--and risk alienating the loyal readership base while potentially failing to attract new readers anyway?

From Pulp to Animerica Extra to Shojo Beat, Viz's strategy has always been to rage against the dying of the light at it were and institute the latter of the two options (rapidly accelerating the churn of new types of content)--and nevertheless, it always fails to stop the steady drop in readership. (I have it on good authority, for example, that Shojo Beat's sales numbers were not good, though honestly all you need to do is look at the sorts of ads they're running to know that.) By these manga magazines' sunset, they have become de facto manga magazines in the Japanese style: glorified promotional material which, like all advertising activities, costs the publisher money. And like with most advertising activities, the publisher actually knows very little concrete about how much investment in advertising of this form actually returns in profit through the sale of its other products.

And so, when your back is against the wall financially, as is the case for pretty much every publisher in the face of The Great Recession, you start making cutbacks everywhere you can. Kiss things like glorified promotional material bye-bye.

As for why Viz did this quietly, well, I suspect that has less to do with the hard realities of the financial bottom line than the symbolic shame. Your promotional material is the face you as a corporation show to the world, and the ability to sustain even a loss leader magazine is a show of strength and thus prestigious in the global manga publishing world. Widely announcing the discontinuation of Shojo Beat, one of its major branding vehicles, would be like a young career woman trying to save money by using less shampoo and then telling everybody at work that she hasn't washed her hair in three days. It would be a sign of weakness, and Viz does not want to look weak...even if there isn't but especially if there actually is underlying weakness.

*Why this is so is arguable. My pet theory is that it has to do with the culture of manga readers in the U.S. Most of them were raised on manga in book form, not in serialized magazine form (or comic store-style floppies form), and thus prefer books to magazines. Japan in general has a much stronger culture of serialization in both comics and prose literature.

I need a nap. After not being on Ambien for a week I realized that the reason I feel drained all the time is due to Ambien... I wasnt drained & lifeless feeling without Ambien like I am with it. Just exhausted and cracked out because I was unable to sleep... So I guess it is a choice of feeling drained or of feeling exhausted.

Hot boy that looks exctly like JACOB was just talking to me! Maybe it was him! lmao Doubt the real jacob would be waiting for the bus trying to get to the college lol Must be a smart lil Jacob going to Skidmore. I should go find myself some 18 year old Skidmore boys. lol Sorry guys, I tend to like them young! Although 7 years is a bit much lol
