Summer Fandom Resurgence

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Two shows this summer have peeked my interest so much I've been thinking about fic. It's been a while since I've thought about writing or reading fic so I consider this a good thing. Let's discuss, shall we?

The Listener )

Now, let's talk about my latest new favorite. I missed the first episode because Dragonhubby had tickets to see Hank Williams III (that's a post for another time), but I watched on SyFy.com and fell in love.

Warehouse 13 )

And if you haven't seen it yet, SyFy is reshowing the Pilot at 6 tonight, and then the new episode comes on at 9.

ETA: I've also realized that both pairings hit my favorite kink. To quote the Smart Bitches from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, it's called the "I don't wanna love you. I don't wanna like you. I can't stop thinking about your hair, dammit!" kink. I'm a sucker for it. A sucker, I tell you.

Yeah, this summer is shaping up to be a good one. I may have to hunt down some fic.

Research Help

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 9:54 AM
I know...it's Saturday. But I thought I'd ask for help anyway.

As you know, Bob, I'm working on my JulNoWriMo novel. It's about a witch who happens to be the drummer in a rock band, and the bad guy who's after her. Very basic plotline, but you get my point.

My question lies in the realm of research. Do any of you know anything about the mythology surrounding witches, or where I could find information on it? Especially information pertaining to familiars and such? I would like some information on Wicca as well, if that's possible. I know Wiccans don't actually snap their fingers and make magic happen, but I wouldn't mind having a base of knowledge so I won't accidently disrespect anyone and their religion. Does that make sense?

Also, on the other end of things, Anna is in a rock band. Do any of you know anything about playing the drums, or life on a tour bus? Or maybe know any place I could find this information?

I know...I feel like I'm asking a lot. I've perused wikipedia and put some books on hold here at my library, but any other suggestions or information would be FABULOUS! And I would be forever in your debt.:)

Pages and Pages...

What is it about summer that brings a lot of people into the library? Don't get me wrong. As a librarian, I'm extremely excited that they're all reading. But, man, there are a lot of them.

Anyway, writing is going well. I think I've figured out who my love interest is in the latest story, and I think he's going to look like Alex O'Loughlin. I think I also know how he's going to fit into my story. So, yay! I am going to have to push, push, push on the word count this weekend because I am very behind. I just have to keep telling myself, "This is a first draft. It will not be perfect or make sense. Just go with it."

The rough draft due date for [info]genderbendbb grows ever closer. I hope I have enough artists to claim stories. Anybody know of any places I could advertise for artists if I need to?

Meanwhile, in the fannish world, I'm still enjoying my summer shows - So You Think You Can Dance and The Listener. I don't have the urge to fic the latter, but I'm certainly enjoying it.

Also, I finally broke down and bought Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay Saga at the used bookstore. I've already read the whole series once, but I've had the urge to read it again recently. I don't why it's my favorite. It just is.:)

And speaking of Nora, I still need to buy her new one. What can I say? She's my go-to for awesome romantic suspense.

What are you guys reading this summer?

Old Fandoms Always Bring the Fun

I have to get in some writing before I take my car over to the Honda place to get it fixed. But before I do that, I just wanted to giggle about Highlander: The Source. I caught it on SyFy today, but could only make it through a few minutes.

While it was good to see Duncan, Methos, and Joe again, what was up with that storyline? Or the Not!Richie Immortal? Yeah, I think I'll stick to the first movie and the TV show.

Oh, also, fanfiction has been beating at my brain again...this time in the form of Charmed crossovers. Not only do I want to finish my Terminator/Charmed fic, but I've had ideas for a Medium/Charmed fic and a Dead Like Me/Charmed fic. *Shrugs* Maybe I'll get around to them. After all, I still have to finish my 100 crossovers table.

Okay, off to write now...

CS and the Kid

Customer Service is always interesting - people call in to CS lines for all sorts of amazingly ridiculous reasons - many of them "PEBCAC" or "BUD" errors* - when a comic said the 1st suggestion he always gave was "is it plugged in?" - my daughter's response was histerical.

Kid: "That's dumb. That's not really the answer is it?"
Me: "Yep - when I worked at *LargeGameCo*, that was my 1st suggestion about 1/2 the time - and the answer was often "wow - you fixed it!"
Kid: (incredulous) "Really? Wow - people are stupid"

*snerk* Good she learns this stuff early ;>

Word Counts

  • Jul. 4th, 2009 at 3:39 PM
Get Your Words Out Total: 10,649/200,000

Storiesnstuff Total: 3,745/25,000

JulNoWriMo Total: 503/50,000

Hmmm...it looks like someone needs to pick up on their word totals. I wonder who that could be. *Goes to write while she waits for her clothes to wash and dry*

Oh, BTW, here's my new default icon. It's my JulNoWriMo novel character, Anna. She's the drummer for a hard rock band who also happens to be a witch. Katie McGrath from Merlin is her face. Yay! Now, all I need is a header to go with it....

One of the best comics yet :>

Good Things

  • Jul. 2nd, 2009 at 12:10 PM
1) Still on vacation.

2) Have an idea I really like for [info]julnowrimo. Just have to start writing.

3) Dragonhubby is taking me to see Public Enemies today. Thank God he likes Johnny Depp, too. He says that's one of the few men he'd go gay for. :)

4) Gerard Butler has a movie opening the weekend before my birthday. Obviously, he must have known it was my birthday week.;)

So, what good things are happening in your life today?

Yay! Books!

  • Jul. 1st, 2009 at 7:04 PM
May *and* June reading, cuz I was lazy last month. :)

May
Children of God, Mary Doria Russell
Language of Bees, Laurie R King
Twisted Triangle, Caitlin Rother with John Hess
*The Valley of Fear, Dir Arthur Conan Doyle

June
It’s Not Me, It’s You, Stephanie Wilder-Taylor
The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan
Sea of Monsters, Rick Riordan
The Titan’s Curse, Rick Riordan
The Battle of the Labyrinth, Rick Riordan
The Last Olympian, Rick Riordan
Stiff, Mary Roach
The Radioactive Redhead, John Zakour and Lawrence Ganem
Complete Peanuts v1, Charles Schulz
Doctor Who New Adventures Cat’s Cradle: Witch Mark, Andrew Hunt
Complete Peanuts v2, Charles Schulz
The Good Fairies of New York, Martin Millar
-Whiteout, Greg Rucka

Well, in two months, only one re-read and one comic (I'm not counting peanuts as a comic, cuz dayum, there's a lot of it!)
This makes 58 read so far. I think I made the 50 books in one year. :D

And since my sciatic is bugging me, and I decided to take a dive onto the hard pavement earlier today, I think I'll get much more reading done.
Happy Wednesday, everyone! Dragonhubby and I made it home with the cats in tow. Everybody in North Carolina is doing well, and it felt good to get away.

Currently, Dragonhubby is walking in and out of the living room as he sets up his new video game corner. He found the perfect table at IKEA to go beside the bed so he can stretch out and play. He's very giddy about the whole situation.

In writing news, today is the start of JulNoWriMo, and I haven't actually written anything yet. I think I've settled on a face for Anna - it's between Alexa Davalos and Katie McGrath. Which one would you guys go with?

I also still need to do a bit of research, but I think I can start tonight after So You Think You Can Dance.

Like I mentioned in the last post, I'm working on something completely different from the New Novel, but I think this one may have a better shot at reaching 50,000 words by the 31st.

So, those of you who are participating, have you started writing yet?
