Avram & Marva matured enough to be planted in dirt. They join a pot already containing Evi, Avi, Avril and Evie.

'What is this thing with avocado trees?'

This is what my fiancé asked today when I showed in the photo of the 3 avocado trees posted on this community. si I googled 'avocado tree fact' and came up with a very good website (sorry if it's already been linked previously, i'm too lazy to check!!!) http://www.avocado.org/about/fun_facts.php
    which says, among other things:

  • Avocados are sodium- and cholesterol-free and have only five grams of fat per serving, most of it the monounsaturated kind.
  • A single California avocado tree can produce about 500 avocados (or 200 pounds of fruit) a year although usually average about 60 pounds from 150 fruit.
  • In one year, a single California avocado tree can absorb as much carbon as is produced by a car driven 26,000 miles.
  • Two mature avocado trees can provide enough oxygen for a family of four.
  • One avocado tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year.
  • A one acre avocado orchard removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year.

those are all EXCELLENT reasons why I LOVE avocado-trees and will definitely grow many many of them.
It's sad we don't have a garden but we are thinking about moving in a few months, maybe we could at least get a small terrasse?

Anyway, here are the latest pictures of my baby-avocado-tree:

    baffled

hey, your avocado trees really look great!!!
I'd love to post a picture of my baby one, but unfortunately I'm not a paying LJ user, and I'm too crap with computers to be bothered with alternative means.
So, well, here's a descritpion of my plant (yet to be named. I soberly call her 'baby' when I talk to her but I guess I have to find her a proper name):
she's about two-three moths iold now.
She's got three cute shoots, and lots of baby leaves. And other tny ones growing. She seems very happy in her new pot.
I've never been very talented with plants, but avocadoes are easy enough. and I'm growing prouder of her everyday, so I guess this is going tp be an everlasting story between her and I.

amazed to see that such a community exists. I guess there are so many things on the internet, there's no point being surprised anymore.
    But still: nice one!

    Eva

Eva is a bit unhappy and droopy since last night's transplant. The rest of her potmates seem to have acclimated.

    Avril repotted with new cousins

Avril was outgrowing her pot, so I repotted her in a giant pot. While I was as it, I added her new cousins Eva, Avi, and Evie to the pot. They're enjoying a post transplant soak in the kitchen sink at the moment.

    Abuelita

When Abby was just a little shoot she had a twin. There were two shoots coming out of the pit but one failed to thrive while the other grew into Abby. Recently this twin has begun to grow again and today she was given her name, Abuelita. (Abby is on the right, Abe on the left, and Abuelita is in the middle.) They remind me a little of Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger:

    Avianna repotted

Avianna, one of my older avacado plants seemed to be outgrowing her pot, so I repotted her this afternoon. Here's Avianna enjoying a post-transplant soak in the kitchen sink.

    Abby nibbled?

Abe and Abby moved to the kitchen window a few days ago. Abby's leaves look suspiciously like a cat has nibbled on them. I moved them back to the kitchen counter until they grow a little taller.

Abe, Abby, Avery, Annie, Arnie, Avianna and Avril

I moved one of my avocado plants, Avery, from a small pot to a medium sized one. I had two others, Abe and Abby in jars ready to be potted, and they went into the small pot. I put the small pot in the kitchen window, and moved Avery to the living room window, where he joined Annie and Arnie (the most recent pair), Avianna and the eldest, Avril. Avril has hit the ceiling, and Avianna will soon.

Yes, all the avocados have names now. :-)

London Avocado Project - critical update
    London Avocado Project - Update

Last week, the avocado plant reached about 6.5 inches height, and had developed 4 bright glossy leaves at the top. I had to take all my courage to cut the plant off at the midpoint as suggested in the literature provided by [info]thebiblioholic Here we see the plant after it has been cut off at the midpoint. Tiny leaflets are in evidence at junctions on the remaining piece of stem. I just hope one of these begins to grow at the same pace the original leaves did, as this would seem to be the critical stage.
    Prior to cutting.

London Avocado Project - Day 68

    Avocado Project
    Avocado Project

On day 60, the root system had begun to spiral round the bottom of the jar and sent out many additional shoots. I decided it was time to re-pot it into some soil. I chose B&Q Multipurpose Compost. I carefully placed the root into a terracotta pot, and filled around it with the compost.

Here you can see the pit, cosy in its new composty pot.

Avocado pit - day 68 - 13th January 2006, about a week after being potted on in potting compost.

The growth of the leaf bud has been rapid since repotting, and is now showing a fresh green colour with many leaf nodes.

    Bag method
I ran out of empty jars the other day and had two more avocado pits, so I am using the ziplock bag method on those two. I read about it in The Artful Avocado by John Canaday. The pits are wrapped in a couple of wet papertowels and sealed in a ziplock bag. I'll check on them in a few days add more moisture and hopefully eventually move them to water if they show signs of life. I've tried this method in the past and it has worked. I also have 3-4 jars using the toothpick method. One has grown a root recently, the others are looking a bit sad.

I'll update with pics of the plants that are doing well as soon as I get a chance.

Welcome to the new members/friends of this community.

    The Pittsburgh Avocado Project

Crossposted in my own journal, [info]mlbish .

I am dreadfully behind at updating all my avocado buddies on the Pittsburgh Avocado Project, but I now have some photos I took several months ago (probably Oct/Nov) of my baby.

Here he is in his environs.  Note that he is well socialized, with lots of other planty friends to keep him company and encourage him as he grows!

And here is the main attraction.  This picture was taken just before he finally (!) sent down a root.  He's lucky he did because I was about to give up!

His root has now grown to the bottom of the jar, so my little under achiever is actually doing something finally!  I will take more pictures and post them, hopefully in a more timely manner.

And I have to thank [info]yokospungeon  for making me a lovely icon that I am thrilled to finally be able to use!
