A Guide to Nick Mag's Friday Panel at NYCC
yaytime,
rufftoon and I had the good fortune of running Nick Magazine's Avatar panel this past Friday, and despite our worries it was TOTALLY AWESOME! Thanks so much to everyone who came (particularly those of you who laughed at my jokes) -- we had a BLAST!
In addition to talking about the Avatar comics Nick Mag has been putting out in the magazine and in the individual DVDs for seasons two and three, we wanted to spotlight some of the fantastic stuff that fandom's created. I was (un?)lucky enough to be put in charge of wrangling this part of the panel, which was mostly dedicated to fanvids and fancomics. For those of you who couldn't make it, or who were there but want to relive the magic, here's a guide to everything we showed and where you can find it on the web!
Also, as a bonus, I've uploaded the compilation reel that made up the bulk of our fanvid content. It was a lot of fun to put together (I even ended up drawing interstitial cartoons, because I'm crazy that way) and I hope you all enjoy it! Just make sure to go and watch the full-length vids afterwards -- almost everything was cut for length because of how little time we had, and I'm sure the vid editors would love to know what you think!

Water Tribe
by Johane Matte (aka Rufftoon)
In Siege of the North, we saw Zhao dragged under the water by the Ocean Spirit, never to be heard from again. But what if the spirits had decided to spare his life? This epic alternate universe comic starts off on a very small scale as we meet Zhaoka, who was taken in by the Water Tribe three years ago, with no memories of who he was before. The tribe is forbidden to speak of his past as a Fire Nation Admiral, but his closest friend, Horuk, is also his sworn enemy -- Horuk's son died in Zhao's attack on the city. For years Zhaoka has been content to make weapons at the forge and go on hunts with the other men, but recently he's started to feel restless. He wants to know who he really is. As his aggressive nature starts to return, Chief Arnook sends him on a Molebear hunt -- if it doesn't kill him, at least he'll have earned his place in the tribe....and his right to know the truth. What happens next? When Zhaoka learns who he really is, will he stay with the tribe? Or will he try to get back some of what he's lost? Currently in it's fourth and final chapter, the Water Tribe AU has pretty much everything -- adventure, intrigue, romance...even pirates! Zhao fans and Zhao haters alike will have plenty to keep them entertained! (PG)
Plight of the Freedom Fighters
by SioUte
What if Jet hadn't died underneath Lake Laogai? In Plight of the Freedom Fighters, Longshot and Smellerbee have to rely on their own quick thinking and stubbornness to save their badly wounded leader. Longshot goes to find help in unexpected places, leaving Bee alone to keep watch in a scary situation. In between scenes of their current troubles are flashes of their shared past -- the life they left behind them in the forest -- that shed some light on the present. Balancing suspense, humor, and even a little romance, Plight of the Freedom Fighters doesn't pull any punches, but you'll be smiling through the tears by the end. (PG-13)
Jetlagged
by DoodleBuggy
Another comic focusing on Longshot and Smellerbee is Jetlagged, by Doodlebuggy, in which the freedom fighters try to figure out what they'll do now that Jet's been captured by the Dai Li. While only the first chapter is up so far, the artwork and writing are excellent -- definitely something to keep an eye on! (G)
The AU
by Irrel
Known only as "The AU," this comic started as a series of shorts about three childhood friends -- Katara, Zuko and Jet. Their troubles revolve around twinkies, PSPs and kissing dares, and usually end in Katara getting the best of the two boys. Things become more complicated, however, when a fire in Zuko's home -- one he's partly responsible for -- takes his mother's life and leaves him badly scarred. His father is furious, and after preventing any of Zuko's friends from seeing him in the hospital, he sends Zuko to live with his Uncle in another town. For a long time, Katara writes Zuko every day, but he can't bring himself to answer, and eventually the letters stop. Katara starts dating Jet, Zuko starts dating a girl named Jin, and their lives continue on separate paths...until one day, six years after the last time they saw each other, Katara starts her first semester at Ba Sing Se University. And guess who's in her Spanish Class? (PG-13)
Modern Boys
by FoxySquid
Modern Boys tells the story of one extraordinarily full Monday at Four Nations High School. Many familiar faces turn up, and there are lots of interwoven stories, from Hahn and Yue's breakup in the morning, to Hakoda's return that night after a long time away. The focus of the comic, however, is on three boys and their complicated relationships with each other: Sokka, Zuko and Jet. Sokka and Zuko have been best friends since they were little -- Zuko's practically part of the family! But recently Sokka's developed a huge crush on his friend, which is made even worse by the fact that Zuko already has a boyfriend, Jet, who's crazy about him. Maybe a little too crazy -- Sokka isn't the only one who wishes they'd break up. At fifty-two pages, Modern Boys is still going strong, and definitely worth checking out! (PG-13)
