Interesting Site
Hi! Long time no blog, and my weight loss efforts have been...lacking. I'd like today to be a fresh start, with both diet AND exercise a focus.

I found this site that a friend uses, and I am joining up. If anyone is interested in adding me, I'm here!

I have at least been successful in small things - I'm finally eating breakfast every day, and I've developed an addiction to Weetabix with fresh fruit.

Goals for this week:
  • workout Monday and Thursday at Curves

  • drink more water!

Hey, gals!
How is everyone doing this summer? Staying active, or partying a little too much like me? I've been lifting weights, 12 oz. at a time a little too frequently. Need some motivation!

Curves
Long time no post! Here's my update:

I joined Curves on November 29th. Had my measurements done last week, and here the news...

Bad- I didn't lose any weight in December
Good- I didn't GAIN any weight in December (HOLIDAY EATING!!)
Better- I lost 2.4% body fat, and 11.5 inches throughout my body, including 3 inches in my waist, 1 inch in my tummy, and 1.75 inches in my bust! Woohoo!!

This is the first time in my LIFE I've worked out three times a week, for the last five weeks. I feel great, and actually enjoy going. Instead of sitting on the couch watching "Friends" reruns, I go and work out. Much more productive!

What's different about Curves? Women only, fun and sociable atmosphere. No pretenses, old boyfriends to run into, just roll and go. When you join you basically agree to work out 3X/week for 30 minutes. I do the 3 circuits/37 minute routine, which has accelerated my fat loss and muscle toning. Note that although I changed my eating habits for a week or two, I have safely returned to introducing some of my favorite dishes into my diet.

Beginner Boot Camp
I signed up for Beginner Boot Camp which starts next week. Called today and they still have openings! This 8 week training program is designed to take the beginner walker or runner & help them get to the point of comfortably running 3 miles. The Beginner Boot Camp program will consist of two coached workouts per week: one focusing on core strength & flexibility & the other focusing on extending the run. The participant will also receive a weekly training schedule that will be available for the entire week.

There are 2 levels in the workouts and weekly training schedule: beginner and advanced beginner. Beginners are defined as those currently walking and not running yet. Advanced beginners are defined as those already running, whether it be for 10 min or even those who are already at 3 miles.

The cost of this training program is $95 & there are 3 time/location options. See website for details.

Anyone here ever do Pilates? Do you like it? Did you see results?

I have been doing 20 minutes of Pilates a day since Sunday. I can't tell how I feel about it yet and wanted some opinions.

How's your Summer?
I fell off the South Beach Diet wagon- hard to do in Austin with Tex-Mex being a staple!

Good news is I seem to be getting into a little bit of a routine for exercise. A couple of the girls at work started a Yoga Lunch Bunch, which we do Tues and Thurs. Really helps out a lot, as both a stress relief and re-energizer! On Wed nite I have gotten back into the gym for Body Pump class. I need to go to the 10am Lincoln Village class on Sat mornings if I don't party too much on Friday nite. Sunday mornings are reserved for a 9am bike ride at the Veloway. Any interested parties?

coffee?
Anyone have any opinions/research/info on how much coffee a day is "too much", healthwise?

Just curious. I love my coffee, but I am very health conscious and I want to know if I am drinking too much!!!

My Pet Fat a visiual aid for dieters
http://www.mypetfat.com/default.asp

I saw this in the local paper today...just thought I'd share it. I remember I saw a doctor on TV and he had brought the 5 lbs of fat (plastic) and it was disgusting...it was big and yucky, and it was strange to imagine that that is what you have inside you!

Anyway, here's the story :)

eating after 8pm
Interesting information taken from Ivillage website:

Timing of Meals for Weight Loss

QUESTION:I've heard that if you want to lose weight you should refrain from eating after 8pm. I've also heard that it doesn't matter when you eat, as long as the total number of calories does not exceed your daily requirement. Which is correct?

ANSWER: The health professionals who told you it doesn't matter when you eat believe that all that counts in weight management is calories. These folks believe that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie -- that it doesn't much matter where that calorie comes from or when it's eaten as long as the total amount taken in is less than the amount you're burning up.

In my opinion, that view is extremely dated. It misses a big part of the picture and doesn't stand up to clinical experience.

For one thing, the "calories are all" theory completely ignores the fact that what you eat -- the composition of your meals -- has a profound effect on hormones that your body releases, namely insulin and glucagon. The balance between these hormones is crucial to weight-loss success. High-carbohydrate meals stimulate more insulin than balanced, or low-carbohydrate, meals. Timing also seems to make a difference. In one study, for example, all participants ate the exact same 2,000-calorie meal once a day. One group ate in the morning and the other at night. The group who ate at night gained weight, while the morning group did not. If calories were the only thing that counted, it shouldn't have mattered when they ate them.

A large meal before you go to bed -- especially one high in carbs -- stimulates insulin, which in turn stimulates fat storage and definitely prevents "fat burning." A tried and true strategy in weight management is to cease eating as early in the evening as is both possible and practical -- a strategy that works quite well for most people. If you just can't go to bed on an empty stomach, stick with a small snack that has protein and some fat but is low in carbs; eat just enough so that you're not too hungry to sleep.

Better yet, try not eating after 7 or 8 and see what happens.

Intro Post!
Hi ladies! I hope you don't mind me joining in, but I'm a neighbor down in San Antonio, and there's no community for San Antonio fit women! I love Austin to death, and I like to visit as often as I can!

I hope this place gets a little busier now that swimsuit weather is coming around...I just got roller skates in the mail today so I can start enjoying the weather outside, but I'm mostly a swimmer.

Looking forward to your posts!

A useful website
http://www.annecollins.com/

I haven't purchased one of their diet plans or anything, but there is a lot of good, general info re: calories in foods, and some nifty calculators of daily calorie needs, calories burned in different exercises, body mass index calculators, waist-hip ratio calculators, etc.

Check it out, it's pretty cool.

War of Words
Things You Are Unlikely to Hear at an All-men's EventThings You Are Unlikely to Hear at an All-Women's Event
"Do you think my butt looks fat in this bathing suit?""I played football in college, so I am pretty fit." (Despite the 30 extra pounds.)
"Ooh, I really like that color on you, you should wear aqua more often.""Dude, I' going to crush you today on the bike."
"I am going to start on the side and let the faster swimmers go ahead.""Come on, we better get to the front of the swim start so we don't give any of those swimmer-types a head start on us."
"God, I hope I am not last."Yeah, this is my first triathlon ever, but I think I should place in my division today."
"You go, girl. You look great!"(Silence, with a steely glance.)
"I can't stay for the post-race party because I have to get home and make dinnner and clean the house.""Sure, I have time for a few beers after the race. My kids and wife know I deserve it."
"I am so proud of you!"(Followed by a long hug.)"Good race". (Followed by a firm handshake.)
"On your left?"(In a polite, apologetic tone.)"On your left!" (In a gruff, arrogant tone.)
"Should I wear a sports bra under my bathing suit?""Should I wear a sock in my suit to combat shrinkage in this cold water?"
