Hey all... I need help finding a new place to get my oil changed. I live in NW Austin near the Arboretum area. I would like to find a place that is under $30 for the oil change and that uses Castrol oil. My old place had all of those but alas they closed their shop and moved out to P-ville and I am not interested in driving all the way out there. So any and all help would be appreciated.
TIA!
TIA!

I know nothing about cars sooo....excuse my lack of knowledge.
I was told the car I just bought needs a new transmission. The previous owner is not sure what's wrong with it but a friend of mine (who is great with cars) said it sounds like it needs a new tranny.
So here's my questions:
Where can I find a honest mechanic who can fix this at a reasonable price?
Or
Where can I find the best deal on a rebuilt tranny so my friend can install it?
If I can find someone to do it for under 800, tranny included, I'd like to have someone else do it so I don't burden my friend. If that's unrealistic, I need to find a tranny to replace the old one.
The car is a 97 taurus, automatic with 98k miles. It runs but when put into drive or reverse, it doesn't go.

Dear
austincommunity,

I have an 04 Kia Rio that needs an o2 sensor replaced... a relatively simple repair that I'm not quite confident with. What are my options (preferably North Central)? I've talked with Capitol Kia, and while I'm sure it would go fine I'm finding the hassle and expense factor might wind up high.
So... other, reasonable, decent mechanics we know of? Anyone ever fix the same thing on the same car and willing to give me some tips?
Regards,
stupidis

Regards,
I went to Midas near hwy360 and hwy290 last week, it cost me $150 to change a tire.
Was ridiculous, but my car was trapped, I was in a hurry and had no other choices.
Now the car makes weird noises when I press gas too hard, or change from 20 mph to 60 mph.
So what's a good and cheap place in Austin to get a car overall check up?
Thanks!

Hey everyone i know these mechanic questions get asked all of the time so i apologize!!!
I need an affordable and trustworthy mechanic (don't we all!) to work on my Jeep's a/c, something to do with the cool air is blowing in to the heater and they have to replace this whole big thing which just happens to be behind everything else.
Long story short I'm not going to let the dealership do it. I'm located at the crossroads of Anderson Lane and 35.
Thanks in advance :)
I hope everyone is having a good week.

Two things:
1. Where in NW Austin do y'all recommend for brake service? Does anyone had experience with either the Just Brakes on Parmer just past Metric or the Brake Check on 183 between Oak Knoll and Duval? Any other recs are appreciated. Quality at a reasonable price is what I am looking for. Also, on average, how long does it take if you call ahead/make an appointment? I have other errands to run on my day off and need to budget my time.
2. I need to get my eyes checked and get my lens prescription. I DO NOT need new frames or lenses, just the eye exam. I don't want to be pressured into a sale, I just need my script from a good optometrist, I don't have insurance. Again, NW Austin please and quality at a reasonable price.
TIA Austin!!

I everyone, I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 which is idling high. At 0 miles per hour it's already idling close to 2000 rpms.
The Saturn also needs to have some strut work done on it. Does anyone have a shop or mechanic here in Austin you would recommend going to?
In the past I would have gone to my father who I think is a mechanical genius or a garage I know down in Dripping Springs but both my dad and the owner of the garage owner is retiring and I don't want to bother them with it.
Thank You!

Can someone recommend a mechanic in the Tech Ridge/Wells Branch area?
My check engine light just came on and the car dies at long stop lights. I'd like a place who will do the computer diagnostic and then let me decide if I want it fixed or not. I'm in the process of purchasing a different car, but figure if I'm going to sell this one it should probably run. :)
Open Saturdays would be ideal, or open until 6 tonight is good, too.
EDITED 7 June 2008: I chose Rose Automotive on Hydro near Metric and Howard and they were GREAT!!!! I HIGHLY recommend them!

So my day sucked today.
I am "newish" to ATX, I used to live here, I moved away and now I recently moved back so I am not as familiar with everything as I used to be, so your help/recommendations are needed.
As I got out of work my stupid service engine light turns on(my car is only like a year and a half old), it sometimes does that when the gas door isn't closed correctly. I needed gas anyway, so I got out checked it and it was fine. As I was filling up, I noticed that there is a freaking nail in my right rear tire. The tire isn't flat or anything, the pressure is fine, but I need to get the nail out and have the tire patched up, it's a brand new tire, like 2-3 months old, and I can't afford a new one. Oh and to add to that as I was driving home I also noticed that my oil change sticker on my window is past due by like almost 2 months. (yeah bad bad day, and thats not even all of it but you don't want to hear about the rest).
SOOooo...
I HAVE to be at work by 10:15 am tomorrow, I don't know bus routes and I don't have my bike here to ride to work. So since the tire isn't bad and it seems okay to drive a short distance, I need to drive it somewhere near my job so that I can walk to work and be on time.
I work down on South Congress, by Guerros, Uncommen Objects, etc.
Is there a place that is within walking distance to that part of South Congress, that opens early(8 or 9ish), can fix my tire, change my oil and figure out why my "Service engine soon" light is on.
If not all three, then is there just a place where they can patch up my tire? I can get the oil changed and the light dealt with later.
I tried google but yeah it's hard to narrow hundreds of places down without a specific name of a service shop.
TIA-sorry for the bad grammar, spelling, or anything else. I have had a long horrible day and your help would be appreciated.

Are there any decent places with cheap inspections, or is everybody just about the same price these days?
I currently have a "lower ball joint" suspension crisis with my car and need to find a decent mechanic... my last time around on LJ a bunch of people recommended JCAutoSpec, which I'm sure is great, however as the shop is located in Round Rock it's a bit out of my way (especially given the current condition of my vehicle I'm trying to avoid I-35 +65mph speeds)...
Can anyone suggest a trustworthy auto shop that is located more Central (N Central or S Central is okay as this is where I work and live respectively)....?
Alternatively, does anyone have an option about Captiol City Automotive (was recommended by a friend)?
Any advice would be much appreciated, I'm decent w/ computers but beyond oil, tires & batteries I'm pretty mechanically disinclined...
Thanks!
