So, I am a poor college student looking to move into her first place with three other friends. I go to UT, but the friends I'll be living with have most of their work/school affairs in the South.. so any cheaply-priced, but not cheap quality apartments I should look into?

ALSO, I may have to buy another car, seeing as how this move may not go by well with my parents, and since they pretty much pay for everything right now, I doubt they'd be so merciful as to provide a mode of transportation. I will be riding the bus, but I would still like a vehicle as a back-up. Any help? At all?

Thanks, from the bottom of my penniless, but well-educated (sure) heart.

It always gets a lot of flack but perhaps one of the college apartments off of Riverside? They're fairly cheap and offer amenities that normal apartments wouldn't. Some might even be all bills paid, and they all are on bus routes (to UT and what not) I lived at University Commons and Longhorn Landings. I got robbed at UC, but I think my roomie had something to do with it.

I don't know about cheaply priced, but me and 3 roomies are trying to sublet our 3 bed / 2 bath condo if you are interested. It's located on 26th and Nueces, and if you all move in, there is a big master bedroom and 2 smaller bedrooms. 2 of us pay $625 for a private bedroom and the other two pay $525.

I put an ad for it on Austin Rents:

I hope you find a place!

Also, 3 parking spaces are included in a garage underneath the apartments, so that's a nice perk.

I say go without a car all together. As much as people complain about the pub trans here, as a student it's free and everything you need to get to, you can. You just need to plan a bit; this is good though since it'll deter unnecessary spending! I did it for seven months and had absolutely no problem without the car. I still don't drive if I don't have to (and I never do...). The extra you might pay to live near a stop or a few stops would be worth it.

Another option -- you could also do a carshare. It's pretty reasonably priced: http://www.austincarshare.org/

I am selling my 2004 Pontiac Grand AM, it has 55,000 miles and is in good condition, and also has an custom stereo system. I will be asking $6,900 for it. If you, or anyone else is interested, I can be reached by email at Stacylynnaustin at gmail dot com.
