Hey, LJ,

I've read tons of old posts about camp sites, but didn't really find what I was looking for. Namely:

*THE MORE SECLUDED (or generally deserted) THE BETTER
*within about a 2hr drive
*hike from the car to the tent site not too far (we're hauling a tent, airmattress, small grill, food, blankets, etc)
*bathrooms (not picky as to how awesome said bathrooms might be) someplace not TOO far away

I've stayed at Bastrop SP in their group baracks, and like the grounds, but don't know what the tent camping is like. I'm interested in Bastrop SP, Enchanted Rock SP (are there woods, or are you out in the open like the pictures suggest?), Colorado Bend SP (probably the furthest I'm willing to drive), and any others you can clue me in to.

Where do you love? Where are you never overrun by other people? Is ithe tent site woodsy? On a riverbank, etc?

Thanks!

If you want car camping there is Lost Pines, E-Rock and etc. E-Rock isn't very woody when it comes to tree cover. It's a big dome mountain that is great for rock climbing. If you're looking for car camping Try making reservations at least two weeks in advance if not more. Now if you're looking for secluded the concept of the two hour drive is more than probably going to be nixed. Browsing through

Browsing through <a href="http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/hill_country/"the state park guide</a> for the local area is one option, but if you really want secluded try looking into the private lands that people rent for extra income. There are tons for rock climbing and camping within a few hours of Austin city limits.

do you have a suggestion for private lands?

enchanted rock is not secluded at all. unless you luck out and get one of the few good spots, you are in an open field with a billion other people basically. i would check into getting one of the private spots because ER is beautiful. but if you cant not recommended.

A number of years ago I did some primitive camping at Pedernales Falls State Park. At the time, it pretty much fit your criteria, although I know it might have changed some in the intervening time (although I have to hope not).

The primitive camping at Pedernales Falls scores very high on "secluded", but not coincidentally, very low on "hike from the car to the tent site not too far" (it's what, 2 miles? 3 miles?)

I didn't think it was all that much of a walk, since it's most a flat, easy hike.

But I can see how others might think it's a little bit more than "not too far from the car." :-)

depends what time of year/days of the week you're going..but if you're planning an early or late "summer" trip...i ALWAYS go to krause springs. if you go to the bottom of the hill you can get a good campsite right by the lake.

There's Inks Lake State Park.

The map is posted on thier page above. My recollection is you can request and reserve a certain spot. It is woodsy and has nice water features but has a bathroom and amenities.

we were there recently and it was really nice. the spots we stayed in were slightly secluded but it has like 300 campsites within a small area.

if you stay away from the water edge it's more secluded but you have to drive your boat to the water.

I'd say you found the place, Colorado Bend is pretty perfect for you needs. It's not a highly popular destination as it's more of a place for fishermen and day hikers than the big family camping groups or the like. It's really pretty though, and the campsites are spread out in a good area along the river, and there's a good chance it will be a quiet place to go.

It would be perfect except that I've just realized that they're having an Earth Day Festival and all of their spots are sold out:(

Next time, it's definitely where I'm headed, though.

We enjoyed Colorado Bend a lot. It seemed to be the least crowded. I also highly recommend Krause Springs, when it's too hot especially. They have spring fed pools of cold water. It's super nice.
