Austin Karaoke

  • Feb. 22nd, 2008 at 10:31 AM

I have a friend coming into town this week and I've never been. He loves karaoke and has asked me to take him.

He'll be here from Monday-Friday and side of town isn't really an issue. We're going to try and show him all around.

So, what's your favorite place to go for the people watching and the experience?

common interest is great and all, but for a real experience i'd go to little tokyo on lamar near rundberg and rutland. its a korean style karaoke bar. and let me tell you the patrons get into it (tambourines and other instruments have been know to appear to accompany songs from no where) its a ton of fun and totally worth checking out. theyve a great menu and drink and song selection.

Karaoke
In my experience, Common Interest is more for serious karaoke singers.. I didn't have a ton of fun at CI. I've enjoyed myself most at Canary roost on Metric and also at Rock-n-Roll karaoke at Beerland.

Karaoke Underground is still around, In fact they might be doing some more shows soon, Keep an eye out for that.

There is also Indie karaoke at Mohawk once a month which is fun and the song list is really good in my opinion.

Best of luck.

It's going to depend on the night.

www.austinsings.com has a list for all the places that regularly bring in KJs from outside for shows, what nights they do it, and what company they bring in on that night. The companies I've had good experiences with are Excitement Tonight, and Edie (can't remember the company name, but if Edie is listed as the KJ, it's not a bad plan).

Common Interest does their karaoke internally (so they're not listed on austinsings), they have a good selection, I've loved their service, and they do have some genuinely good singers...and some REALLY bad ones. The person who said that it's only for the really serious singers is clueless, one of the most popular regulars is an old man with no teeth who can't carry a tune.

Don't go hating on Willie. That'll be me in about 30 years.

Clueless
Hehe, Don't get me wrong! I didn't mean to hate on CI, I was just giving *my* opinion of the place. Of course I am a little more esoteric(punk) in my musical tastes so thats reflected in my choice of venue. So hey, no need to get ugly.

I've only been to Common Interest once, but they had a great selection of songs and a good sound system. At least that night, I didn't feel it was dominated by serious singers.

I've also been to the Water Tank (http://www.austinwatertank.com/index_austin.html) several times which definitely has a more country vibe and the place is a bit more of a dive. The venue is smaller than CI and if you get there early and with a good group of people, it is a lot of fun.

I love my Karaoke bar. Shenanigans' Night Club, off Pond Springs Road, Tuesday Thursday Sunday night Karaoke. More on their website, http://www.shenanigansnightclub.com/ and I'm there playing league pool on Tuesday nights.

Re: Shenanigans
Like everything else in that shopping center, it gets packed. Last time I went to Shenanigans I hardly got to sing. YMMV

Well for me, it's hands down Homer's Bar and Grill all the way. Diamond Karaoke runs the show and their list is PHENOMENAL.
Here's a link to Diamond and here's the link to Homer's Myspaces.

Hope you have fun!!
