In a spectacle that can only be called an “appearance” — and trust me, that’s all it was — Chelsea Clinton showed up an hour and a half late to a “debate visibility rally” held at Red River Cafe, 2912 Medical Arts St., this afternoon. She pulled up in a minivan, got out of the car, thanked the crowd of at least 200 faithful backers of her mother and, just as everyone was gearing up to hear a passionate speech about her mother’s qualifications or goals, she got back in the van and drove off.

Despite the event being planned for 2:15 p.m., the crowd kept growing until around 3:45 p.m. when Chelsea finally arrived. During the wait, a band played and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee spoke, along with Ellen Richards, daughter of the former Texas governor. And then we heard from an event organizer, who “could just feel” that Chelsea was going to show up any minute — for at least 20 minutes.

When Chelsea got out of the van, the TV camera crews — including all of Austin’s major channels and at least one from Dallas — barely had enough time to press record before Chelsea was gone.

Despite the brief appearance by the guest of honor, the mostly female crowd seemed invigorated and cheerily marched to a nearby watch party.

“It was kinda what I expected,” said June Phillips, who had driven to Austin from Fredericksburg to see Chelsea.

Peggy Floyd, who traveled to Austin with Phillips, said she was even more convinced about who she wants for president after seeing the candidate’s daughter.

“There’s nobody else who’s running that’s got enough sense,” she said. “Obama is a cheerleader, but don’t give him the ball. He doesn’t know what to do.”
