Zilker Park Kite Festival
Check out the absolutely free Zilker Park Kite Festival next weekend, on Sunday, March 2. It's a blast! Kids love it! You can bring a kite or (I think) build one there. Super fun, and a great photo opportunity.

Have fun!

Re: Zilker Park Kite Festival
Be warned of extreme crowds though. Might want to have a kiddo leash/backpack thingy or an extra adult or two to help keep track of the munchkins.

Re: Zilker Park Kite Festival
Hm, that sounds like a pain. Maybe we'll do our own this weekend. Make it the 'Pre-Kite Festival' .. would they allow that?

Re: Zilker Park Kite Festival
I honestly have no idea.

Last time we tried to go, we couldn't even get to the street because traffic was so backed up.

Re: Zilker Park Kite Festival
I second the Kite Fest. Yes, there tends to be a crowd but that's part of the fun. That means a ton of beautiful kites in the air. Don't try to park there. Take the shuttle, that's what it's there for. You can also take a backpack or ice chest with food and drinks so you can avoid the lines for those items.

Austin Children's Museum, which is free on Sundays from 4-5pm, btw.

Tour the Capitol. I was quite surprised when my nephew asked if we could do this. I love touring the Capitol. I think parking is still free in the Capitol parking lot and the tours are free and run every 15 minutes.

Fly a kite, toss around a ball and ride the Zilker Zephyr at Barton Springs!

Take them to the Zilker Botanical Gardens. It's free and there is a neat koi pond, pretty flowers and cool paths. Take a lunch and make it a picnic! Parking is free on weekdays. Weekends run $3.

THIS weekend, bring them to the Cake Show. It's free for kids and only $5 for adults. There will be over 200 cool cakes on display and for $5 the kids can build their own Gingerbread Bunny Hutch.

From the promoter:
It's time once again for Bookkids notoriously AMAZING Puppet Show! This month's show will feature stories by the Grimm Brothers—those amazing collectors of fairy folklore and wicked witches. The Book People Players will surely make this show as magical, whimsical, and weird as the Grimm stories really are. Come and enjoy a great show and some pretty delicious cookies! This morning at 11:30 am.

Austin Nature Center - http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/ansc/

Lots of native animals that for one reason or another can't be released back into the wild, plus a big fishpond and a dinosaur pit where they can "dig" for bones.

Austin Zoo - http://www.austinzoo.org/

A rescue zoo that also has a few overflow animals from larger zoos. Lots of big cats that look a lot happier and more active than the ones I see elsewhere.

our favorite:
Austin Nature & Science center (located sort of behind Zilker) has a great in-door nature exhibit with lots of look/touch/explore stuff, plus a mini-zoo outside, a giant dinosaur bone sand pit, and lots of trails that go down to the creek in the back.
