Fredericksburg

  • Nov. 10th, 2007 at 8:40 PM
My husband and I are considering going to Fredericksburg for a weekend next month to celebrate our anniversary.  Then someone told me that the only fun thing to do there is pick peaches and apparently December is not prime peach season.  Soooo...should we wait and go next summer?  Or will we be able to find other things to occupy ourselves with?  Any suggestions would be great as neither of us have ever been there.

Also, what bed and breakfasts there are good/terrible/etc?  Thanks for the help!

I love Fredericksburg! They have wineries, a brewery, antique shops, gifty type shops, museums, Enchanted Rock nearby. Picking peaches is about the only thing I haven't done there.

I didn't even know they had peach picking. But I've been to the wineries and Enchanted Rock and a friend of mine just recently went there for her anniversary and had a great time at the wineries, too.

Whoever told you that is smoking crack.

They have wineries and a brewery, and Enchanted Rock as previous people have said.

Also, when my dad came to visit, he decided that we MUST go to the museum of the Pacific War, since Nimitz was born Fredericksburg. One thing, there is a really beautiful Japanese garden in the museum, and you don't have to actually pay the museum fee if you just want to see the gardens.

Also, go eat the the Auslander. Good German potato salad.

As the others have said, wineries and shopping are fantastic, esp since it's the holiday season, so the shopping should be good.

In addition, Johnson City is only about 30 miles away, and there's stuff to do there as well. Or so I hear (they do have a nice Christmas parade day after Thanksgiving as I recall).

I've always had fun there, and never picked peaches. In December, they have the Weihnachten Christmas festival and you can walk around and shop and drink glühvine.

That's a little unfair...it's a tiny, kinda dull little town that shuts down at 5:00, but it's a good day-trip. I couldn't see planning to spend a weekend there--maybe go on Saturday, do the main street, have dinner, stay overnight at a bed and breakfast and move on, but unless you REALLY like shopping, it doesn't seem like it'd be worth more than eight hours.

But...on your way there, two recommended stops--in Johnson City, where you turn left to get to Fredericksburg, look for a dive advertising the best chicken-fried steak in the world, because it may actually be, and if you like strange modern art, you MUST stop by Eyfells and Eyfells, an very neat, several-acre art installation and museum. I've got a few dozen shots on my flikr site, but half the fun is just being around the artist, letting him talk about his life and work.

when we went last spring, we stayed above the brewery - not bed and breakfast, but "bed and brew" - we got samplers of all of their beers the night we checked in. the room we stayed in had a cool "hunting lodge" type theme, but other rooms have different themes.

there is also a hotel/motel (I think run by the same folks) that is called "the hangar" - it kind of has a 1940's theme and it has a cool little bar and stuff.

to us, fredericksburg didn't seem to close down at 5 . . . it seemed like plenty of people were going out to bars and stuff after that, and stores were open later than that too.
You should definitely eat some german food while you are there . . . der lindenbaum is one of the restaurants that serve it, but there are a bunch more.

oh, and we do have a picture up of the room we stayed in above the brewery, in our entry from 4/24/07.

You can also check out Wild Seed Farms to see whats in bloom and stroll through the butterfly house, and if you pick the right weekend, you can check out the huge flea market just across the road. There's also the Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area, and while its a small park (pretty much just the tunnel) its a great place for photos.

Fredericksburg is a great short trip. I don't know if there is enough to do for longer than 2 days/1 night. You can't pick peaches, but, I think there is a place that sells Fredcericksburg peach ice cream all year. Here is a good place to stop for lunch on the drive-

The Nimitz museum is actually quite nice--they've totally upgraded it in the last few years and it's a worthwhile experience. Also, on the way to Fredericksburg is the LBJ National Park--there's the boyhood home in Johnson City and the ranch right on 290 halfway b/t Johnson City and Fredericksburg.

Just to add to the list. Fort Martin Scott is there. They run various re-enacting events, flint-knapping shows, and pow-wows there occasionally. This is a bit early for your schedule, but I think they have one scheduled for later this month.
