Public Computer help at Convention Center

We still need volunteers to help with the public machines down at the Convention Center.

One important thing to know as a volunteer is that some folks haven't been registered yet in the Red Cross family locator site. They assumed that would be happening when they were registered when entering the shelter. The intake registration DB was set up on-the-fly by the City and was just used to track who was coming into the shelter. The database was uploaded to www.katrinasafe.com, but if there are typos in the entries it may be hard to find folks. Thus, it's important to get the guests into the Red Cross site as well, especially as the Red Cross site is more forviging on exact names.

From what I heard at the door yesterday: 17 year olds can work unsupervised. Those younger than 17 must be accompanied by their parents, who are supposed to supervise them at all times.

Blanket policies may suck. But they're trying to keep things tame inside (and seem to be doing a good job of it).

here's a more important question: with all the talk of dysentery and cholera (including deaths), is there any danger of catching something from the folks at the convention center?

If you do, you'll be pleased to know that you'll have many doctors and nurses nearby to take care of you.

It's a large group of folks that just went through some stressful times. A few are coughing. Most aren't. I do what I usually do around crowds. Shake hands to be friendly. Wash them before eating to be careful.

Seriously, there are EMS people still on the floor. And the medical triage is still up and running.

i'm not so much about me having massive diarrhea and vomiting, but it would be irresponsible to expose the kids, who would then be taking it back to the round rock school system.

i would be interested in hearing a health professional's opinion on this...they are taking extreme measures in NOLA to avoid getting it, but I just don't know if it passes easily from person to person...hmmm

Sorry for being snarky. After being down there helping the folks just isn't a question for me. But I don't have kids. And passing something nasty on to an entire school district wouldn't be helpful.

Truly, I'd worry more about widespread disease where folks are still around high water and dead bodies. But leaving the kids at home may not be a bad call. And whether you take them down there or not, there's nothing wrong with being a bit careful around any large crowds.
