Austin Weight Loss Challenge

For years I've faltered with losing weight. I had remarkable results one year (80 lbs in 5 months) and fell off the wagon and have never regained that momentum.
As summer approaches, I feel the need to be more active and to try different things (insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results).

I came up with an idea for a community that will do a 90 Day Weight Loss Challenge. We've got 4 months of summer, so you pick when you begin and when you end.
This community will be for posting your progress, support, talking about exercise/dieting, possibly meeting new workout partners to keep you motivated, and to help keep the others on this difficult journey motivated (or to gain motivation when yours begins to falter).

It doesn't matter if you need to lose 15 lbs, or 150 lbs.
If you're interested in a combined effort to better our physical health and condition, please join AustinWeight Loss Challenge over at [info]atx_wl_c.

We're also hoping to recognize everyone's efforts, but to reward the top Male and Female in an under 30/over 30 categories.
Criteria will be based upon percentage of weight lost, and how close you came to achieving your secondary goals (I'm hoping to get some businesses in on the rewards).

I'm hoping for enough people to have at least 2000 lbs lost over the summer.

open mic?

  • May. 9th, 2008 at 9:01 AM
So I was wondering if some of you guys and gals could point me toward a good local open mic. I'm pretty much open to any suggestions that you've got. It can be a music or poetry open mic - or both. I would kinda prefer for it to be during the week because I'm not one for obnoxious, oppressive crowds. It doesn't have to be a bar - but I would appreciate being able to get a beer or something if I felt like it. Super plus points if it's in north Austin. If not, and you brag about it enough, I'll probably still check it out. :)

Thanks, y'all!

Two things:

1. Is there a bargain camera type of place in town? I'm looking for a place that sells expired film, cheap flashes, that kind of thing.

2. The sno-cone vendor at the Austin Zoo makes pickle sno-cones.

Road Work on Shoal Creek Blvd??

  • May. 9th, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Does anyone know about the road closure on Shoal Creek Blvd just south of the Shoal Creek Blvd and Allendale/2222 intersection? I went to pick up the boyfriend after work yesterday and the guys were pulling out the "Road Closed" barriers and directing traffic through the neighborhood. Then they put us out on 2222 and we couldn't turn left. :(

I checked the city's site
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/ca/default.cfm

But nothing's listed.

I'd like to know how long they'll have the road closed so I can steel up and drive down Burnet (sob) instead until they fix it.

my boyfriend just informed me that going to san antonio tomorrow will be trouble because he heard they are going to shut down some southbound lanes of 35 for construction in the south part of austin.
is this true? or is he crazy and doesn't know what he's talking about.
i checked the website the last construction question person put up but i didn't see any info.
if anyone knows the info would be greatly appreciated!!!
Ok guys, we have the final details on the when and where.

When: June 21st, 2-5pm
Where: Opal Divines Freehouse (6th street location)

http://www.opaldivines.com/freehouse/index.html

The upstairs balcony area has been reserved for Austincommunity.

The current plan is to have nametags where you can place your LJ name/real name on it, so people will recognize you. We chose the 2-5 to allow for a more social feel instead of a 'lets get together and eat' thing.

Special note: this is during Opal's Happy Hour, so feel free to get your drink on if you're of age.

I expect you to be there. Yes, you. You as well. But not you. You know why, don't act like you don't.

Are there any 18+ / all age bars in town? A friend from Houston says there's a place (in Htown) called the flying saucer where there's a patio outside that's not 21+. Anything like that?

Pagan shops

  • May. 9th, 2008 at 4:53 PM
Are there any pagan shops in Austin anymore? Last I heard Celebration was out of business and so was Natural Magic. Rumor or truth? Either way, is there anywhere else I can go? Thanks.

One week until...

Sell my body to science!

  • May. 9th, 2008 at 6:46 PM
Anyone know of any local science/medicine studies that need test subjects? Especially ones that pay money. Do any of you have any experience in doing this? What groups should I stay away from and what groups have a good reputation?

Afri-Cola?

  • May. 9th, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Is there someplace in Austin I can buy Afri-Cola? It's a soft drink I had in Germany years ago and loved the flavor! I've mentioned it to friends over the years, but no one here seems to be familiar with it.
