Can anyone think of any bookstores in Austin over 50 years old? I only know of one (it's a little bookshop in a church) and I'd be curious to know if there's older ones out there. I don't know how old the UT Co-op is, but since it randomly destroyed its bookshop a few times, except for selling student books, that one's open to debate.
To those interested, the original scroll draft of on the road by jack kerouac is being put on display at the Harry Ransom Center (actually being unrolled as I type, directly behind me, as I'm blogging from the HRC visitor's service desk).
The scroll will be on display starting tommorow March 7th through June 1st. The exhibit is called "On the Road with the Beats" and focuses on primary correspondence (letters, postcards, etc.) between the beats as well as the idea of travel within their work. It's fascinating, in my opinion. The Harry Ransom Center is at 21st and Guadalupe, a big concrete slab of a building on the UT campus, and gallery hours are 10 to 5 tuesday through friday, 10 to 7 on thursday, and noon to 5 on saturday and sunday.
Also, there's a fun/hilarious "beatnik questionnaire" at the HRC website written by the young Gerard Melanga, an early beat poet.

Ok, does anyone know of an office supply store or any store really that will have an IBM Cartridge Printwheel II, typewriter wheel. The type size is 12P Prestige Elite and the reorder number is 1353502. The office supply company we use doesn't have it and said they can't find it, so I'm hoping someone out there knows where I might possibly get one. Its for work so I don't really want to have to purchase one online. Thanks!

I'm looking for a good CHEAP yet trustworthy travel agency in Austin. Anyone ever been to the little one on the Drag, over by Dobie?
Basically, I'm looking for ideas on a trip in China after the Beijing Paralympics end in mid-September. I'll be with the US Team in the Athlete Village until the 19th, but I don't want to fly home the next day on the chartered plane with everyone else. As long as I'm over in that part of the world, I want to take a look around, you know? I've got some ideas, but I don't speak a word of Chinese and I'm disabled on crutches. Not to mention white as a cracker and blonde enough that I really stick out in Asian countries. I want to end up with something that will be fun, SAFE, and worth my hard-earned money. I was gonna try and plan it all myself, but I think I need help. And for that I need a travel agency I can trust.
No rush, btw. Just felt a little wanderlust creeping in today, thought I'd start planning ahead of time for a change.

Austin Hoopers Meetup - Music Madness
When: Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Where: Near the South Austin Recreation Center, on the corner of Cumberland Rd and S. Fifth St. (Austin, TX 78704)
Who should come: Hoopers who love music.
Why: The only thing better than hooping is hooping to MUSIC.
How to find the organizer: I'll be the gal with the green & yellow hoop, dancing to middle-eastern music.
Details: Bring your favorite tunes (and your favorite portable player) to the park. Shimmy-shimmy-shake, hip hop, bellydance, or whatever beat gets your hips moving! This is an outside venue in a public place, but we'll still need to be respectful to the surrounding residential neighborhood. We can't crank the tunes to "11" or set anything on fire.
URL: http://hulahooping.meetup.com/19
And people who do Poi are invited, too. :-)

I just read a previous post about Eddie Izzard coming to Austin, and read some comments about donating money to The Paramount to get access to the presale.
Lucky for me, one of my friends who found out about the show weeks ago from the Paramount's newsletter let me in on the "secret" and so I decided to donate to get in on the presale list.
I have yet to discover when the presale begins. Apparently it was supposed to begin last week. I called The Paramount and asked what was up, they said they got so much response they decided to make another night (originally it was going to be June 6th and 7th) and that the presale would begin this week...I have yet to recieve an email though I did get one asking how many tickets I want & for which night.
I don't know if they are still accepting donations from people who want to get on the presale list or what, but if anyone knows any more information than what I've got, please please let me know.
I've been calling looking for answers (got machines!) and I might just have to go downtown with a monkey and a gun.
I want to buy my tickets!
