Anyone else in the Sherwood Oaks area get woken up at 7:30 by someone playing music? I mean, really loud music.

Day Trips 1 and 2

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 11:57 AM
The austin chronicle has 2 books called Day Trips that are trips out of Austin for the day. I would like both of these books, but they say in the Chronicle that you have to mail a check to them and wait. I don't like that.

Does anyone know where I can buy them in a store in Austin? South is best, but I am willing to drive.

Helping the Homeless

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 2:06 PM
After the whole wankery that was [info]k8y vs [info]austincommunity for posting about Ben White Santa, I figured I'd throw down the gauntlet here.

Most of you know about the ARCH. You know, the monolithic building over on 7th and Neches. You must know it, because when you see all the homeless people there, you probably cross to the other side of the street. Or maybe you don't, whatever.

The point is that the people there always need help. They're always looking for people to help out with food, with manning the different desks, scheduling the washing machines for people; all sorts of things like that. I have been volunteering there for a while, though after my recent encounters with Austin motorists left me injured, I had to stop coming by for a while.

So if you want to help, go here and apply online. Tell them in the comments that you got referred by Roy who was in the motorcycle wreck.

Doings tonight...

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Been cooped up for too long and I need to get out  a bit. Other than Suede playing at Cedar Street, what sorts of things are going on tonight in Austin? Starting around 7-ish?

Best Vietnamese place that's open on Sunday? North/Northwest, preferably.

I'm looking for recommendations for someone to stain my concrete floors in Austin. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wanting to try something new...

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 7:32 PM
I am interested in taking classes in some type of craft. Painting, glass blowing, pottery, maybe even ballet. I haven't done any of these (except some painting in college), so beginner level stuff would be great.

Have you taken any of these types of classes in town? What are rates like? What was your experience like with the quality of the class and the flexibility of the schedule?

Thanks.

Mason for a small project

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 8:35 PM
We have abandoned a nearly done flagstone path (it's hard work!); there's about 23' x 2.5' that remain. I'm having a hard time finding someone who's interested in a project this small. Anyone's neighbor's cousin's best friend available?
Thanks!

Lotsa cops

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 11:03 PM
About 8pm, at least a dozen cop cars were racing south on 35 as if there had been a free donut announcement to what appeared to be some sort of disturbance on the upper deck right around 42nd or 43rd St. About that same time, I saw someone run from 35 across the northbound service road between Airport and Mueller (the city bus in front of me almost hit him), but I have no idea if it was related.

Anyone have any idea what was going on? I checked the Statesman and the city traffic page, but there was nothing there.
Has Time Warner's Roadrunner service been slow for everyone for about a week now? Is this bandwidth throttling or are they having issues? I use uTorrent but encryption is enabled and even when the program is turned off it's still frustratingly slow lately.
