Getting started with standup comedy

Does anyone have advice on comedy-friendly open mics or other venues for amateurs?  I've written a routine and I'm eager to try my hand at this.

Fedora

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 3:35 AM
Where in North Austin could I purchase a reasonably priced (nothing over $80) black fedora, preferably with a narrower brim?

I have one now, but I'm rather "eh" about it, the felt is terrible. I'd like to get a decent quality felt version, but twill or cotton canvas are also acceptable. I also want to be able to change out feathers for costuming purposes, so I'd prefer it to come with the standard plain black band around the base and no other embellishments.

Thanks!!

Hey, what happened to Curras? I drove past the other day and they looked shut down for good.
Austin police have issued multiple arrest warrants in the kidnapping of a 5-year-old boy last week, authorities said.

The boy, Adrian Jaimes, was found unharmed after an extensive search in a North Austin neighborhood late Thursday.

The boy had been snatched from the back seat of his family’s Jeep Cherokee in Northeast Austin about 7:45 a.m. Thursday as his mother prepared to take him to school.

According to arrest affidavits obtained today, the kidnapping was carried out to obtain “money owed,” but does not say why the family may have owed them money.

Hector Luis Hernandez and Modesto Vences-Garcia are each charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony for which they face life in prison. Bail was set at $100,000 each.

The affidavits said juvenile suspects also were involved.

The documents said that police interviewed neighbors for possible information after the kidnappings and that they described seeing a dark blue Oldsmobile Alero park in front of the house on at least three occasions before the kidnapping. One of the witnesses provided a license plate.

The affidavits said that police issued a bulletin for the car and that Cedar Park police officers found it a short time later. Police interviewed a man and woman, who they said gave conflicting information about their whereabouts that day.

Police went to their home to interview them again and that they were able to get information that eventually led them to the suspects based on those interviews.

Police have scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference to discuss the case further.

Lance Armstrong,

Quit acting like a little bitch please.
If you keep it up we're going to make you relocate to Dallas, or even worse, Houston.

KThxbye.

My friend just moved near Hyde Park and we're trying to find her a cheap used bike (like free or 40 bucks). I promise I've been googling for a while, but can't find anything we can walk to.

thanks in advance

Rainier Management: Horrible Douchebags

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 12:18 PM

I know this news is about a month old, but it's still relevant to anyone renting from or thinking about renting from Rainier Management. They have crossed the line into criminal activity and clearly demonstrated a commitment to dishonesty and greed. Renting from any of their properties should be avoided if you value your living conditions.

Look Rainier, you've earned your very own page on the Austin Tenant's Council website, just for trying to screw all your tenants over.

Austin Tenants’ Council Blog

Interesting news story, especially the part where you lie to the reporter and claim that a second notice was sent out to clear up your little boo-boo. Very clever! Nobody will ever be able to verify that this is a false statement, not even the thousands of people who supposedly received the notice!

I normally check this site: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/warrants/warrantsearch.cfm
before working with contractors, just to make sure. But I've been plugging in names that definitely have active warrants (based on blotter posts) for major stuff (like this) and the charges don't come up. So I take it that website only lists traffic warrants.

Does anyone know if APD/Texas has a free website that actually pulls up major warrants? I don't care if someone has an unpaid speeding ticket, but if they have an active warrant for say.....kidnapping, I'd like to know before letting them into my home.  (but without having to subscribe or pay for actual criminal checks)

Enchanted Rock and Fredericksburg

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
One of these days we'll be taking a daytrip to Enchanted Rock and perhaps visiting Fredricksburg as well.

So...

Enchanted Rock:
How long would on average would the summit and loop trails take?
You can bring food to picnic on the top right? As long you take back all of your trash.
When is open for day use? I can't find it on the website.
Any other tips?

Fredericksburg:
We are thinking about stopping by Fredericksburg, but I wasn't sure what is there to do these days. It's not peach season yet, and it's not wildflower season. Maybe there are any recommended bakeries where we can pick up something for our hike? We prob won't spend more than an hour or two here.

Also, speaking of that area, is there anything to do in the other small towns in that region around this time, such as Kerrville, Comfort, Boerne, Stonewall, Bandera, Blanco?

weight loss up north?

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 5:06 PM
Are there any doctor-managed weight loss places comparable to the Austin Diagnostic Clinic or Austin Bariatric Clinic that are farther north?  Round Rock?  Even Georgetown?  I am really interested in looking into something like that but all those places are so far away I know I won't stick with it just because of the drive.  Or even a nutritionist...something.  I am getting really frustrated and am on the brink of just giving up and staying fat.  Thanks!

Wooo!

Obama - Clinton debate tickets

Debate Tickets? You'll Have to Wait...

I've been getting some emails asking about how to get tickets for next week's scheduled Texas debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The answer for right now is, wait.

The debate will be at the LBJ Presidential Library on the UT campus. Logistics on ticketing have yet to be worked out between the hosts -the Texas Democratic Party, Univision and CNN. Once we hear anything about snagging some tickets, I'll be sure to let you know. Perhaps I'll try to get some and put them on stubhub. You think that would fly?

Horse stuff.

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 7:37 PM
Heya all.

I'm a moderately experienced competitor in both hunter/jumpers and eventing (schooled up to training level back in high school) and have been horseless since I graduated due to a handful of reasons - I still have one of my horses, but he is retired due to an old injury that left him too arthritic and sore to ride, and I had an injury in a schooling session that knocked me out of riding for a little while roughly about the time I started college, and I sold my competition horse.

Anyway. I'm really wanting to get into riding again, and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or tips on any barns around the Austin area that offer adult lessons with the use of lesson horses (seeing as I'm not in a position to own another horse right now). Help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
