Dan McKlusky's closed??

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 11:22 AM
My uncle is coming into town from Dallas today to visit and wants to eat at Dan McKlusky's but I can't find a number that works for them. Did they shut down?

Salsa

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Anyone know where in town there might be salsa music this evening? A friend wanted to go to Dallas Nighclub which I have never been to, and according to their site salsa begins at 10pm. That's a bit late for me, so any other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Okay, so I've heard the rumors about Diet and Regular Chocolate Cherry Dr Pepper in town.

Yearning for a taste of what may (or not be) one of the most sensational drinks to hit my taste buds in awhile (save from some Blue Moon Ale) I sojourned out last night, but was unable to find any.

Can anyone recall a store, in the central/north area (I'm off east 290) that would have this delicious concotion??
It would make my (lazy) Sunday.

Weird tech-support problem

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 2:30 PM
I have a 500GB FAT32 drive that I've been using with Mac OS 10.5 to store files (around 300 GB, at last check). The drive started acting up a couple of weeks ago, and I've been trying to copy the files from it to another drive so I could do a reformat of the bad drive. I am having no luck at all, either on my Mac or on my parents' Windows machine.

On the Mac, the drive sometimes mounts and sometimes doesn't, and when it does, it's crippled -- slow access and usually stops working at all after a short time (often bringing the system down with it). On the Winbox, I can see the drive fine, and all the folders, but none of the folders contain any files.

Obviously, I should have been better about backups, and if I can retrieve these files, I've got a new 1 TB drive specifically for backup purposes. If anyone has any pointers to Austin people or businesses who might be able to get at these files, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful. (I'm in San Antonio at the moment, but will be back late tonight and am willing to drive as far as necessary in the morning.)

Thanks in advance, y'all.

Tickets for R.E.M. at Stubb's

Are any tickets being sold for R.E.M. at Stubb's during SXSW? My guess is badge holders only but thought I'd check. Thanks.

writing workshops/ groups

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Hey everyone, my googling has yielded no results. I am looking for writing workshops or groups in the area. I checked UT's Continuing Ed site and they didn't seem to have anything, neither did St. Edwards. I recently just finished getting my MFA in poetry and I am looking to get a group together or take a workshop so I keep actively writing, otherwise I am afraid I will lack the motivation. Any info would be most appreciated. I am looking for a serious writing group, since I already have an MFA and am looking to get work published. Although, I have had excellent luck in Continuing Education workshops back in Boston where I am from, so I would be interested in those types of workshops as well.

Salsa Lessons

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 7:16 PM
I am interested in signing up for salsa lessons. Any recommendations of places to do so?
I am looking to interview someone (here in Austin) who lived during the time that the United States found itself at war with peoples of the Pacific Rim three times in living memory: first with Japan in World War II, then Korea in the early 1950s, and finally in Vietnam from 1965-1975.

The interviewee must be someone who lived during at least one of these conflicts to discuss how the war, or wars, affected their lives. The purpose of the interview is to learn, first hand, what life during wartime was like for one person.

In exchange for your time, I will provide (an economical) lunch. :-)

Thank you!!

made in texas - liquor

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 8:09 PM
I know there are several local vodkas, and I know about Paula's Texas Orange/Lemon, but are there any other forms of hard alcohol made in Texas?  My husband and I are having a "Made in Texas" party; we've got beer and wine covered but we aren't aware of  any other alcoholic beverages we need to be on the lookout for.  Thanks!

Dirty Dog

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 9:15 PM
I have a gift certificate for the Dirty Dog. It only has $4.52 on it and it expires Jan. 31st.

I washed my dog today and won't be needing to use it again before it expires. If anyone wants a $4.52 discount and will be washing their dog in the next week, let me know and you can have it.

Austin bike shops

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 10:00 PM
I am pricing out bicycles (road) and I am looking for a good local shop. Any suggestions?

Bonus points if it is up North but customer service, price, availability and selection are more important to me than location.

Atlatls.

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Anyone know of a publicly available spot where one could hurl an atlatl and not run the risk of spearing passersby?
