moving in

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 12:14 AM
I recently started a new job Downtown and the drive from North Austin is just too much.

I'm looking all over Downtown and there's just too much to go through by myself. Fortunately I have plenty of time to figure it.

Can anyone recommend a good apartment locator?

tattoo artist

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 5:14 AM
I need an artist to design a tattoo for me. I would prefer someone who is familiar with the bdsm scene. I only have guidelines for what I'm looking for, so it's possible the artist may have to do some editing to the image.

Are you such an artist? Do you know one? How much (if anything) should I expect to pay for this type of service?

Glasses Repair

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 8:21 AM
Hello all...

Hoping that someone has had a good experience, or can recommend a glasses repair place. The metal frames broke at the right arm right at the point where the arm meets the frame.

Hoping that I can get them soldered temporarily until I can get some new glasses...

Anyone out there know of a good or at least a place that wont mess them up more?

Physical medicine recommendations

The Details )

Can anyone recommend a neurologist/orthopedist/sports-medicine doctor who has experience in spinal injuries? Bonus points for North Austin or Round Rock. Super bonus points if they have treatment options other than pumping me full of steroids.

Carpet?

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Hey all,

The BF and I are looking to recarpet our house without spending an arm and leg (Home Depot prices). Does anyone have a recommendation on places in Austin that sell carpet at wholesale or just "less than retail" prices?

Bonus points if they have a mini showroom or a website with real information :)

Thanks!

Another lost dog! Lamar/St.Johns/Airport area

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
*Update-- We just picked him up and hes at home safe and sound. He was found dodging cars on St.Johns earlier. Thanks everyone!!

I'm sorry to post another missing dog, but I know there are sooo many people and animal lovers in this community who are all over the Austin area.

He is the black dog in the photo after the cut, along with his escape partner who has been found.

From a friend:

Sometime before 7pm, someone smashed my driver side window and absconded with my stereo. All other items of value were ignored, probably in haste. Dash is intact. Just finished vacuuming up all the glass, which I perceived as ice when I initially opened the door. (freezing already?)

My liability and/or homeowner's insurance don't cover this, so does anyone know the best place to find a cheap driver window for '97 F-150?

Sissy has been found!

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 4:51 PM
I just got a call from Billy, and Sissy has been found! She got hit by a car and is pretty banged up, but she's going to be okay. Whoever hit her didn't stop, and she was found by the park police, who took her to Town Lake Animal Shelter. She lost her collar sometime between getting out of the yard and being discovered by the park police. She's been at the shelter since yesterday morning, shortly after she went missing. Billy was there TWICE and showed them pictures and they said, "Nope, she's not here." Then they emailed him this morning saying they had her.

She has a pretty badly broken pelvis and some serious cuts and wounds, but the vet expects her to recover. The recuperation period will be extensive and she might not be exactly the same dog she was before, but she's home.

I am so grateful to all of you who have written and offered help and advice. Thank you so much! You're wonderful!

And an especially grateful "Thank you" goes out to the wonderful trauma vet at TLAC, who took great care of Sissy when she arrived in her injured state.

Poor, sweet Sissy! She's been through a lot, but she'll come out the other side of it just fine.

Man, I love that dog.

Does anyone know if girl scouts in Austin still do door-to-door sales?

Cookie season starts the 19th and mama needs her fix.

Open Mics - Personal Recommendations

  • Jan. 16th, 2008 at 5:25 PM
Man, there are a LOT of open mics around town! We're more interested in comedy right now, but poetry is a big draw, too. Mixed and musical nights are good to fit in ever so often, as well.

I've read several entries here mentioning various options (notably this one), and I went digging online and found these listings:
For singers
Various mentions on Yelp
For comedy - this one's out of date and mostly broken and doesn't really provide an open-mic list
For poetry
And, of course, we have The Austin Chronicle's calendar to sift through.

...but that still leaves us with the questions of 1) what we're missing from the above and 2) which of these are worth attending/supporting.

Here's your chance to tout your favourite open mic - or warn about the ones to avoid.

Either way, your input will be extremely appreciated.

Hey, so I'm hoping to find a cd by a local band (Rory and the Artificial Heart) and I'm wondering what indie type record stores are around that carry local artists' music.  Any suggestions?  I already checked Waterloo, of course.

Thanks guys. :)
