Moving to Austin soon!

Hello there, Austin types.

I'm a game developer moving from the Phoenix, Arizona area to the Austin, TX area within a couple of weeks, and I was hoping to dig up some local area information before I get there. Livejournal seemed like a decent place to start.

Nearly everyone I've met who has been to, lived in, or been from the Austin area has really liked it, so I'm certainly looking forward to a change from my current surroundings. I grew up in New Orleans, so the past three years in this ultra-conservative desert town (Mesa, Arizona.. suburb of Phoenix) has been rather dreary in comparison.. even though I've spent 90% of my time at work. Austin will be good for me.

One specific question I was hoping one or more of you might help with:

We (that is, many of the people in my company) are looking for apartments at the moment. We seem to have found a place that is great, at least from the ads and the websites, that will take a bunch of us at a reduced rate. I've seen a couple of scary reviews about the place though, and I'm trying to track down some more specific reviews of the place. Since I haven't had the chance to visit personally, I'll have to take others' word for the apartment and sign the lease before I even move out there. It's called "The Mansions at Canyon Creek," and the website says it's here:

---From I-35, exit FM 620 West. You'll pass I-183 and the Lake Line Mall. Our Community will be on your left at Boulder Lane. Exit 281 North.---

If anyone has some ideas or knows anyone who's lived there, or in that area, any info you have would be great. I don't want to get stuck for a 7 month lease in a crappy apartment.

Again, glad to see that there's a livehournal community for this area. Nice to meet you all.

hello austinites!
i'm coming to visit from seattle this week all by myself, and need to be entertained! its going to be a short trip. i'll be there from tuesday morning until wednesday evening. i need help on things to do! i'm trying to escape the cloudy cold rain for a couple days, it was a last minute trip on a whim. never been to austin, always curious, and there is a slight possibility of me relocating there. so i have to see what you kids are up to out there!

ok, what should i do? i'm vegan, i'm 25, and i want to check out some hip spots. what should i do downtown, what should i do in soco, etc? is there anything going on tuesday night? any good happy hour or bars i should check out? i'm into all kinds of shit, uhhh, you can check out my user info page if it'll help you tell me where to do things. i don't want to sit here and say "i'm into this, and this...", its just weird.

oh, am i going to need quarters for parking? i'm renting a car.
thanks guys!!!

funky smell

  • Jan. 11th, 2004 at 2:21 PM
has anyone else in the hyde park-ish area (i'm a little bit west of hyde park) noticed a distinct ass-like smell in the air? i have no idea how far it extends.

thoughts as to the source of the funk, and more importantly, how long the funk might last?

The sponser of this event said that hardly anyone is showing up....so I figure you have about 45 minutes to get free tickets for little effort

Does anyone out there have an extra pc hard drive they'd like to unload? a sound card would be rad too.

apartments

  • Jan. 11th, 2004 at 9:03 PM
The house my friend and I were supposed to be moving into this week is still being renovated so we have to find a decent apartment that isn't too overpriced ASAP. Can anyone suggest something, preferably central, south or downtown?

I set my VCR to tape Arrested Development, but FOX had that Playoff game and it went into overtime, so everything went on 1/2 hour later and the vcr shut off at 9pm. Did anyone tape it? Could I borrow it? Maybe trade a new VHS for the episode? I love that show so much that I just want to not miss one thier funny as hell!

Thanks in advance you can icq me or yahoo me or just reply here
