February 5th, 2002
Hello, all. The Ralph Nader Super-Rally was a stunning success, with 5500
tickets sold, and the whole event done on barely a month's notice. For more
information about it, see http://www.democracyrising.org
On Monday, February 4, at 7:00 pm, Austin Against War
(http://austinagainstwar.org) will meet. As the State of the Union address
made abundantly clear, the "war on terrorism" is very far from over.
Potential targets include Somalia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Iraq.
The administration has also singled out Iran and North Korea. In addition,
unless something is done, we are in for an era of vastly inflated military
budgets, new military bases around the world, and greater social control in
this country. For an analysis of the speech, see "The State of the Union
and the New Cold War" -- http://www.commondreams.org/views02/020 1-04.htm
Location: Above the Clay Pit Restaurant, 1600 Guadalupe.
On Tuesday, February 5, at 7:00 pm, local author and activist Professor
Robert Jensen of the Nowar Collective will be doing a reading from his new
book "Writing Dissent: Taking Radical Ideas from the Margins to the
Mainstream", as well as a book-signing. Political activists with radical
ideas often find themselves shut out of the mainstream news media. This
book is designed for activists who want to take on that challenge. Based on
the author's experience as a journalist, activist, and academic, it offers
insight into radical politics and mass media and then moves on to describe
practical strategies for breaking into the mainstream. Illustrated by the
author's own opinion columns published in daily newspapers, Writing Dissent
explains how journalists work and how activists can successfully work with
them.
Location: BookPeople -- 603 North Lamar
The book can also be ordered off the Web at http://www.peterlangusa.com/
On Thursday, February 7, at 7:00 pm, there will be a screening of the
documentary film "The People and the Land."
This film takes a critical look at U.S. support of the Israeli occupation
of Palestine, its impact on daily life there, and its surprising effect on
US policy. Film maker Riad Bahhur will be available for discussion after
the screening.
This special event is free, but seating is limited. Please RSVP Patrice
Mallard at 474-2399
Location: Millennium Entertainment Complex at 1156 Hargrave (corner of
Rosewood and Hargrave)
Sponsored by The American Friends Service Committee in cooperation with
Austin Against War.
On Friday, February 8, from 5:00-6:30 pm, there will be an antiwar vigil
and leafletting (this is a weekly event).
Protest US war and covert operations/intervention in Afghanistan,
Philippines, Somalia, etc. Show up, bring a sign or candle.
Location: 11th & Congress, in front of the State Capitol
On Saturday, February 9 , from 1:00-4:00 pm, there will be a public forum
on the question of whether the City should lease or sell the land of the
old Robert Mueller airport. Should business and home owners always have to
own the land too, or should the City keep all of its Mueller land and lease
it to business and home owners? Leaseholding is a well established tool for
escaping crushing land prices that drive the cost of owning a home out of
most people's reach. Speakers include Chip Buttner (developer), Ike Shupe
(Real estate lawyer), Maria Brewster {FNMA -Fannie Mae), Mike Cannatti
,(Local Lender), and Tom Fitzpatrick . There will be a question/answer
period. Child care will be provided.
Location: Unitarian Church, 4700 Grover, (for directions, see
http://maps.yahoo.com)
Info: mlehmann1@austin.rr.com or 419-7000 http://www.keeptheland.org
All events are free and open to the public. Please forward where appropriate.

I just got a membership to the Clay Madsen Recreational Center in Round Rock. They have raquetball courts, and I really want to play, but I don't know how to play raquetball. Anyone have any suggestions?
Hello austin people....
We are moving and no longer want these items in our lives......
A really big entertainment center that holds a 32' TV. Has compartments for holding DVD's video tapes, and a 3 seperate storage compartments. oooo..
it also has a secret back storage for tapes and stuff, that has a lock on it. HOPEFULLY we will find the keys as we are moving out.
WARNING: this thing will take the strength of about 5 guys to get it moved.
The price we are asking for it is....200bucks. We paid 500 for it.
We are also getting rid of a bedroom dresser. It is the Broyhill,Fontana collection. It has nine drawers, and a mirror. It has been used as a scratching post by our cats. so it has some deep scratches on the sides, and a few nicks on the top. it is good condition other than this. We are asking 75 bucks for this.
OH! We are also GIVING away a HUGE cat tree. Free to you ... you just gotta come and pick it up.
If you are interested email fsck_101@yahoo.com.
