My mom is coming to town and wants to take the roomies and me out to dinner.
She wants something quasi-nice (i.e. not kerbey lane) and "austin"ish.
As the only places I ever go out to eat are fast food, star seeds and kerbey
I was hoping for some suggestions.
Thanks!

Hyde Park Bar and Grille. on Duval and 45th?
It has a 'nice resteraunt' atmosphere, but stil feels very austinish.

a little nicer might be Castile Hille at around 5th and Lamar.

it all looks good, but i can't help myself but to get the chicken fried steak every time i go there. it's the only place i've found that serves real chicken fried steak.

Mother's!
On Duval. Amazing vegetarian food, not overpriced or fancy.

Re: Mother's!
I second that on Mothers (my favorite restaurant)! And if you want a little more upscale (and slightly more pricey), then West Lynn Cafe (on West Lynn)....it's owned by the same people as Mother's.

Re: Mother's!
i really don't understand how people love mother's so much. i've eaten there about 4 times and every time the food had about as much taste as a plate full of sand.

Because we think it's good, duh! ;)

Re: Mother's!
well, if sand tastes good to you, then go for it.

if you're going for vegetarian, i'd say West Lynn Cafe....and i also second the Hyde Park Grill choice.

Re: Mother's!
They asked for suggestions, not what you think about other people's suggestions. Way to be helpful.

West Lynn Cafe is also good, though. Almost as good as Mothers.

Did you know Mother's and West Lynn are run by
the same people?

Re: Mother's!
i don't really care..i'm just saying, i'd prefer west lynn's menu over mother's anyway.

Re: Mother's!
ditto

also, dude needs to back off. i've become convinced that the only people who like mother's are the ones who have never had vegetarian food done right. :(

Re: Mother's!
I hear that from time to time. I guess that it depends on what you get or maybe on what you are accustomed to eating. All I can say is that everyone I have ever taken there has loved it and asked to go back. I'm vegan, but a lot of these people are meat-eaters.

Re: Mother's!
The problem I have with mothers is not the taste of the food, which can be quite good, but the issue of how much oil they throw on stuff. Sometimes their pasta dishes are unedible due to the oil content, etc.

Re: Mother's!
Not too crazy about mother's either. They haven't a single thing on the menu that i couldn't make better in my own kitchen.
My fav. veg. place is Veggie Heaven--asian themed food, though. While it's not a veggie resturant, KimPfung at Lamar and 183 have the best tofu!!

The new 1600 S. Congress Cafe is pretty good, I think. (They happen to be owned by the same company that owns Trudy's -- which would be another good suggestion, if y'all are into tex-mex.)

Threadgills
not sure if it's nice enough, but Threadgill's on Lamar is good food and "austin" atmosphere.

Chuy's is always a good idea esp. if your fam is from up north somewhere where there's not a lot of good tex-mex and the atmosphere SCREAMS Austin :)

Follow that up with some Amy's (the predecessor to Marble Creamery Slab whatever) and a walk down Congress.

Fairly quintessential Austin nite I'd say.

My faves
I heartily endorse Trudy's (Mexican Martini, any of the quesadillas), Curra's (gotta try the avocado margarita), West Lynn (best vegetarian ever), Hyde Park Grille, and Romeo's.
I add Green Mesquite on Barton Springs for bbq, and the Hula Hut for just plain good food and tons of Austin atmosphere.
