National Australian Fan Fund 2009 [Apr. 14th, 2009|10:00 am]

angriest
Welcome to the NAFF race for 2009.

The National Australian Fan Fund (NAFF) was created to assist fans to travel across Australia to attend the National Convention (Natcon). NAFF assists fans to travel to the Natcon and covers the costs of airfares and accommodation. A convention membership is donated by the Natcon.

The Natcon for this NAFF race is the 48th Australian Natcon, Conjecture, and will take place in Adelaide, South Australia over the weekend of 5-8 June 2009. Fans residing in all states and territories except South Australia are eligible to be nominated for NAFF.

To be on the ballot, each interested fan must be nominated by three fans, including at least one from their own state/territory and provide a bond of $20. In addition, each nominated fan is required to provide a 100 word (max) description indicating what they could bring to interstate fans and a brief description of their past experience in fandom. It is expected that the winner will produce a report of their trip, engage in fundraising to support future NAFF races, and to help administer the NAFF race for the following two years.

Nominations can be sent to NAFF at fanboy@gmail.com or given in person to one of the NAFF representatives at any one of the many functions you might find them. Representatives are Sue Ann Barber (VIC), Emma Hawkes and Grant Watson (WA). For more information please contact Grant Watson at fanboy@gmail.com. Previous unsuccessful applicants are welcome to re-nominate. Please pass this information on to any friends who may be interested. If any nominees or nominators are unknown directly to the administrators we may contact you for further information.

Nominations must be received by Friday 24 April 2009. Voting opens the following Monday, the voting period concludes on Friday 15 May 2009.

Please make all cheques payable to NAFF or National Australian Fan Fund. Please email if you would like to pay via direct deposit or paypal. Remember to include your cheque / money order and to attach your nomination platform!

For news as it happens, keep an eye on the Australasian Science Fiction Fan Funds community on Livejournal.

DUFF and NAFF and the Red Cross [Apr. 13th, 2009|07:06 pm]

emma_in_oz
Not a con report - just a quick note.

NAFF

Also, $31 for the National Australian Fan Fund (NAFF), which was $11 in the auction and $20 in the art show.

I can deposit this week.

DUFF

Swancon raised $83 for the Down Under Fan Fund (DUFF), which was $78 in the auction and $5 in the art show.

I can't actually deposit this - Is there anyone in Perth with a bank account? Or can I PayPal it to one of the administrators?

Red Cross

And $47 for the Red Cross Victorian bush fire appeal. (OK, not strictly speaking a fannish thing but is an incredibly important issue).

I was wondering when the call for nominations for NAFF will come out? The national con is coming up pretty soon and I know some WA fans who would be interested in running.

Also: As Angriest has pointed out, the DUFF race is now on. More information is available at: http://sffanz.sf.org.nz/duff/DUFFBALLOT2009.pdf

There is a wonderful suite of people running this year, and, also as Angriest says, I'd appreciate it if you could vote for me: Emma Hawkes.

DUFF 2009 is on! [Apr. 1st, 2009|09:45 am]

angriest
Probably preaching to the converted, but just to remind you all: the 2009 Down Under Fan Fund (DUFF) race is on.

Since 1972 the Down Under Fan Fund, a fan-supported fellowship, has encouraged closer ties between science- fiction fans in Australasia and North America through an alternating exchange of representatives. DUFF delegates attend the Worldcon or a national convention in the host country and visit fans they might otherwise never meet in person. Delegates are responsible for raising funds and administering DUFF until a new delegate from their continent is elected, and are expected to publish trip reports which can be sold to aid the fund.

The vote is for an Australasian fan to travel to the 2009 Worldcon, Anticipation in Montreal, Canada, 6th to 10th August, 2009.

This year's nominees are:
- Emma Hawkes
- Chris Nelson
- David Cake and Grant Watson
- Alison Barton

DUFF is entirely fan/volunteer run by the winning candidates from the previous election. You can download a voting form here, or vote online here. Voting costs a few bucks, which helps towards paying for the successful delegate's travel costs.

Now I (Grant Watson) would obviously love you to bits if you voted for David and I, but in all seriousness the important thing is that you remember to vote! Follow one of the links, read each of the nominees' statements, and choose the person (or persons) you think would best fulfil the duties of DUFF delegate.

DUFF Nominations are now open! This year it is Australasia - North America! [Jan. 29th, 2009|09:57 pm]

callistra
Anyone who is interested in being a DUFF candidate can contact me or Justin Ackroyd or Alan Stewart (or a number of other people in fact) for advice and help on what to do.

Cordially yours,

Julian Warner
current Australian DUFF helper

You can find it here.

http://sffanz.sf.org.nz/duff/

So if you could remind your groups that the DUFF race will be on this year,
and we are accepting nominations up until 15th March, 2009.

I chose that date since it's a month before SwanCon in Western Australia.
And so ballot forms could be created and sent over.

I've set the close of voting date as May 17th, 2009.
Cheers,
Norman

With more than 50% of the first preference votes, the GUFF administrators are happy to announce that barring force majeure Sue Ann Barber and Trevor Clark will attend Eastercon LX.

The administrators thank all the candidates, their nominators, and more than 100 members of the various fannish communities, for participating, and in the process raising around AUD1400.

It is possible that some of the regional attributions may be incorrect, and one or two votes may have been mislaid. Revised numbers may be published at a later date. Nonetheless, the administrators are confident that the decision of the voting populace is clear. In keeping with the traditions of the race, a list of voters names will be published in a paper fanzine... although obviously not how their votes were directed.

[mood | amused]

Let the RACE BEGIN!

We have three contenders for the GUFF this year, all of which I consider very good friends! Eeep!

Every one of them is a talented individual (or couple) and will shine as an excellent example of Australian fandom.

Lifted from the URL above:

About the race

GUFF 2008 is now on. Candidates for the Australasia-to-Europe race are: Sue Ann Barber and Trevor Clark, Norah Ding, and Alisa Krasnostein. You can vote via Paypal or (soon!) download and send in a completed ballot.

Vote via paypal or send cheque or money order or cash in person to (Ang) ang dot rosin at gmail dot com or (Damien) dmw@pobox.com. Voting ends 2008-November-24 23:59 UTC.

A pdf to print and mail will soon be here

Hit the paypal button to vote online: you'll have a chance to enter your ordered list of candidates. We'll accept any vote where we can confidently discern a voter's intent, and query anything we don't understand. You don't have to list all the candidates.

Remember to mention the candidates in your preferred order. Email dmw@pobox.com to confirm your vote.

About the candidates

Sue Ann Barber and Trevor Clark can't wait to meet lots of fans at Eastercon LX. They love conventions and fandom and all of the opportunities they present. Between them they have: run conventions; edited fanzines; programmed conventions; run awesome panels; created a Fan Fund; started an SF history project; been SF club and convention committee members; and have just been there to make sure events come together. They are passionate about Lego, SF TV, graphic novels, stereo photography and flying cars. They really want to experience UK fandom first hand and are looking forward to seeing you all in the bar.

Sue Ann and Trevor's nominators are Bruce Gillespie, Danny (Heap) Oz, Grant Watson, James Bacon, and Claire Brialey.

Norah Ding at almost two years old represents the future of fandom. She is the child of an Australian and a European fan who met at Eastercon '06. She has been attending conventions in Australia and the UK and would like to meet more fannish children!

Norah would be accompanied by her mother Kylie. Kylie has been attending cons since the Worldcon in '99. She likes corsetry and won the best hall costume at Eastercon '06. She found UK fandom friendly and welcoming (particularly Norah's father ;-) and would like to meet more.

Norah would like to visit her daddy. Norah Ding: cute like a button

Norah's nominators are Ju Landesse, Sarah Parker, Shay Telfer, Julie Faith Rigby-McMurray, and Oscar Logger.

Alisa Krasnostein says: I have been active in fandom since 2005 but what I lack in mileage, I more than make up for in enthusiasm. I am Executive Editor of the multi-award winning review web-site ASif! (http://www.asif.dreamhosters.com), a manic blogger (http://girliejones.livejournal.com) and short story reader (http://community.livejournal.com/lastshortstory/). I have a passion for small press publishing and edit two ezines (Shiny, http://shinymag.blogspot.com and New Ceres, http://www.ceres.dreamhosters.com) and co-edited the print anthology 2012 (http://www.twelfthplanetpress.com), also released this year. I love cons, long discussions at the bar, room parties and general silliness. I'm interested in meeting European fans, trading ideas and building bridges to establish some collaborative projects to connect Australian and European fandom in the long term. I'd love to bring my room party GirlieCon to LX 2009.

Alisa's nominators are Lucy Sussex, Cat Sparks, Gene Melzack, Robert Shearman, and Fran Dowd.

About GUFF

What is GUFF?GUFF was created in 1979. Known as the Get Up-and-over Fan Fund or the Going Under Fan Fund, depending on which direction it's running, GUFF exists to provide funds to enable well-known fans from Australasia and Europe to visit each other's national (or other) conventions and to get to know each other's fandoms better. GUFF, like other fan funds, exists solely through the support of fandom. The candidates for each trip are voted on by interested fans, and each vote is accompanied by a monetary donation. These votes, and the continuing generosity of fandom through auctions and other donations, are what make GUFF possible.

Who may vote? Voting in the race to send an Australasian fan to Eastercon LX, the 60th British Eastercon is open to anyone who was active in fandom prior to June 2006, and who contributes at least GBP5 or AUD10 (or the equivalent in other currencies) to the fund. Larger contributions are encouraged and will be gratefully accepted. Only one vote per person is allowed. You must sign or otherwise verify your ballot, but your vote will not be made public.

Voting Details. GUFF uses a preferential ballot system which guarantees automatic runoffs until a majority is obtained. You rank the candidates in order of your preference for them. If the leading first-place candidate does not have a majority of votes after the first round of counting, the first-place votes for the lowest-placed candidate are discarded, and the second-place votes on those ballots are counted as first-place votes for the candidates concerned. This process is repeated until one candidate has a majority of all the votes cast. Votes for second and third place candidates are therefore important, but you may not rank any candidate in more than one position on your ballot.

Hold Over Funds. This choice, like 'No award' in award balloting, gives you the chance to vote for no GUFF trip in 2009 if for any reason th candidates do not appeal. Hold over funds may be voted for in any position on the ballot.

No Preference. This choice is for voters who do not wish the GUFF trip to be held over, but who either cannot or prefer not to decide between the candidates.

Donations. GUFF gratefully accepts your freely given money and material for auction. If you're not eligible to vote, or for some reason you don't wish to vote, why not donate anyway?

Candidates. Each candidate has posted a bond of AUD25; promised that barring force majeure they will travel to Eastercon LX, http://lx2009.com, if elected, and provided nominations and a short platform displayed above extolling their many interests and virtues.

The next Get-Up-and-over Fan Fund is now open for nominations. If you know what this means, are an Australasian fan, and have a desire to attend the sixtieth British Eastercon, LX,
then you need to contact me. You'll need to find three nominators in Australasia, two nominators in Europe, and send me a 100 word platform and an AUD25 bond.

Nominations will close on or around 8 September, and ballots will be immediately distributed. Voting will run until shortly after Novacon.

Please disseminate widely.

A Message from the DUFF Delegates [Apr. 7th, 2008|04:03 pm]

smofbabe
A message from Steve & Sue Francis that I thought was appropriate to post here, even though the upcoming conventions list is for cons in North America.

PRELIMINARY DUFF TRIP REPORT April 6, 2008

We have just completed our trip to Australia as DUFF 2008 representatives. New friendships were made with fans from Perth, Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide and Melbourne. We also visited with people that we knew from our previous trip to Australia in 1999. One of the requirements of the DUFF representatives is to attend a major Australian convention during their trip Down Under. This year it was the Australian NatCon/Swancon 33 in Perth.

The second task that falls to the current DUFF representative is to prepare and distribute a trip report for the year in which travel is completed. That report is now a work in progress. We hope to have it finished before the end of the year. Copies will be available for $5.00 wherever you find us or by mail.

The third task we will be undertaking is to raise funds during the next two years thru auctions, table sales and by collecting any donations from fans who are willing to support the DUFF fund. To that end we will be attending the following conventions around the U.S.:
ConGlomeration Louisville KY April 18-20
MidWestCon Cincinnati OH June 26-29
WesterCon Las Vegas NV July 3-6
Denvention Denver CO Aug 6-10
ArmadilloCon Austin TX Aug 15-17
The FranHurst Family Reunion Relaxacon Louisville KY Oct 3-5
SmofCon 26 Columbus OH Dec 5-7
ConCave 29.5 (New Year’s Eve Party) Horse Cave KY Dec 26-28

There will be a DUFF table at Denvention next to the Australia in 2010 bid table and the Xerps in 2010 table. You might hear some tall tales of our Australian fannish tour at the table, so come by and say G’day Y’all.

NAFF took in $320 at Swancon. Yes!

This came from items auctioned by Edwina Harvey, Lucy Zinkiewicz, Sue Ann Barber, Emma Hawkes, and Ju Landesse.

And also Edwina raffled Easter eggs and I launched *Fannish Journeys* with great work in it by Sarah Xu, Ju Landesse, Laney Cairo and Steph Bateman-Graham.

Thank you all - what a great outcome.

Electronic DUFF ballot + payment by Paypal now available [Jan. 4th, 2008|12:55 am]

bort43

This is from Jean Weber, who writes:

Please distribute this information widely, as I am not well plugged in to online fannish groups.

Norman Cates, the Australasian administrator for DUFF, has approved an electronic ballot Jean Weber created for those wishing to vote in DUFF2008 and make payment through PayPal at http://jeanweber.com/duff2008/

The ballot is sent to an email address at Jean's domain, from where it is automatically forwarded to Norman Cates, one of the DUFF administrators, without Jean seeing it.

The PayPal buttons link to Jean Weber's accounts in the US and Australia. She will pass the money on to the DUFF administrators.  Obviously she will see who sends how much.

If you wish more privacy, please don't use this method; send a paper ballot and a check/cheque or money order instead.

The PDF version of the ballot can be downloaded from http://www.fanac.org/DUFF2008.pdf

For any questions about the ballot or payment, please contact Jean directly: jeanweber -at- gmail -dot- com.
