Help with research
Hi. I'm currently doing some research on the subject of asylum seekers who come to Australia by boat. I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of information that will answer the question why they come to Australia rather than settling in other, nearer countries. And also the case against accepting them. These need to be authoritative sources, in other words respected publishers, government web sites, that sort of thing. Not some random .com page rant, in other words. I'm not seeking to debate the issue here or anything, but if the mood strikes you, feel free. | | Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 | 9:36 pm [almostangelic]

Abortion laws to blame for bush fires? This is surely the most unusual statement made in the wake of Victoria's bushfires. A press release from Catch the Fire Ministries reads (in part):Catch the Fire Ministries (CTFM) leader Pastor Danny Nalliah said he would spearhead an effort to provide every assistance to devastated communities, although he was not surprised by the bush fires due to a dream he had last October relating to consequences of the abortion laws passed in Victoria. He said these bushfires have come as a result of the incendiary abortion laws which decimate life in the womb. Yesterday (Monday 9th February 2009), the front page of the Herald Sun newspaper reported "The Darkest hour for Victoria". A few months ago the news media should have reported "The darkest hour for the unborn" but unfortunately the "Decriminalization of Abortion bill" went through parliament and was passed, thus making many people call Victoria "the baby killing state of Australia", Mr Nalliah said. He said on November 7th last year we had sent out an email to our national network and a posting on our website carried an urgent post titled, ‘STOP PRESS. URGENT PRAYER NEEDED REGARDING AUSTRALIA, ESPECIALLY THE STATE OF VICTORIA’ following a dream he had on the 21st of October 2008, which he shared with his team on 22nd October. Following is an excerpt from the dream which was published in the article: "In my dream I saw fire everywhere with flames burning very high and uncontrollably. With this I woke up from my dream with the interpretation as the following words came to me in a flash from the Spirit of God. That His conditional protection has been removed from the nation of Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of innocent children in the womb.” Testament to the amount of patience Australians and Australian media have for dickheads proved by this story only making it as far as a blog | | Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 | 12:04 pm [rockcriedout]

Bushfire appeals raise $10 million
From ninemsn: Ordinary Australians are digging deep, donating nearly $10 million in less than a day to a fund for victims of Victoria 's bushfires. Premier John Brumby launched the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Fund in conjunction with the Red Cross and federal government on Monday to help individuals and communities affected by devastating bushfires. A statement from the Red Cross said that at 6.30pm (AEDT) on Monday, the fund had received $7.9 million from more than 45,500 website and phone donations. Similarly, the Salvation Army's bushfire appeal had received $2 million in just one day, and expected it to hit $3 million by Tuesday. "We've cracked the $2 million mark. It's an unprecedented outpouring of goodwill never seen before in our living memories," Salvation Army spokesman Pat Daley said. "It's really touched a nerve in the Australian community." Big businesses has pledged more, with Tabcorp leading the donations at $2 million. The country's four big banks - ANZ, Commonwealth, National Australia and Westpac - have contributed $1 million each. Many companies, including Telstra, which has so far pledged $500,000, are also donating services, such as free phone diversions. Australia's sporting organisations are also getting involved. An appeal will run throughout Tuesday night's one-day cricket international between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide , while revenue from tickets sold to the game from Monday onwards will be donated to a Commonwealth Bank Appeal. The Australian players will donate all their match fees from the fixture to the bushfire appeal, while Cricket Australia has contributed $100,000 and the South Australian Cricket Association has pledged $25,000. The AFL has rescheduled a pre-season Cup clash between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon from Darwin to Melbourne on Friday night, with all proceeds to go to the Victorian government's appeal fund. The Nine Network will hold a telethon on Thursday night to raise funds. It will be hosted by Eddie McGuire. Meanwhile, legendary singer Leonard Cohen, Paul Kelly, AEGLive UK and The Frontier Touring Company have announced their intention to donate $200,000. Cohen and Kelly are currently touring Australia , performing their final concert on Tuesday night in Melbourne . * Donations to the Red Cross fund can be made using a secure online donations form or by phoning 1800 811 700. * Donations to the Salvation Army fund can be made by calling 13 72 58 or via salvos.org.au xposted to melbourne maniacs | | Monday, February 9th, 2009 | 10:27 pm [alexthedevil]

Big Attractions My boyfriend has this thing of wanting to see all the big attractions around Australia. Daggy I know but still he is funny with it.
I have searched the net and came across a list of these big attractions but I know that there are some out there that may not be on this list, they may not be as well known or not really considered to be a major tourist attraction but he apparently we LOL still want to see as many as he/we can! ( The big attractions list )If anyone knows of any around or know of an weird large object in their town like the other day we accidentally came across the worlds largest sundial (or so the sign said LOL) in Singleton on our way to Tamworth to see the big guitar so anything like that would do for now. School zones
There's been a bit of talk lately about school traffic zones. It turns out a good sized chunk of the population ignores them. Some say that this is because the zones are confusing, and I must admit that I've mistakenly sped through school zones at times, either not noticing the signs (schools tend to be in leafy areas), forgetting about them after a long school holiday, or just plain not knowing what the time is. I've heard people say that those flashing lights should be in front of every school, and that's a good idea except that the costs would be immense. My proposal is that the school zones are made permanently 40 kilometers per hour. Even at midnight Christmas Eve, it's the same speed. And on either side of the 40 zone, a zone where the maximum speed limit is 60. It can be difficult to slow down from 80 or even 100 to a mere 40, so the speed should be staged down. And finally, have double demerits permanently in place in all school zones to deter speeders. This way, speeding drivers only have themselves to blame. I think most of us wouldn't deliberately break the rules of the road. The above three measures, as well as things like an increased police presence and maybe speed cameras and so-on, would be bound to make the areas around schools safer. The only down side would be that it would add valuable seconds to peoples' travel times. But I'm sure we'll manage somehow. | | Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 | 11:35 am [rockcriedout]

Are you a US Citizen in/near Strathfield, NSW? EDIT 2:22PM: I just talked to her and she's been overwhelmed with people wanting to witness it, so it's all organized. :DAn e-mail I got from the Obama supporters in Australia campaign: Are you a US Citizen in/near Strathfield, NSW?
If so, there is a voter from the state of Wisconsin in your area who NEEDS YOUR HELP!! Wisconsin is the only state in the union that requires ballot envelop signatures to be witnessed by another American. Our WI voter in Strathfield KNOWS NO AMERICANS and so is seeking one in the area who can help.
Please contact me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you can help. Every vote for Barack is precious and ones from Swing States are especially important to Obama supporters everywhere. Please do come forward to help if you can.

Clean Feed
In the last federal election, Labor made a promise to introduce a pornography filter at the ISP level. The Government is refusing to release concrete details on the plan, but the gist of the initial proposal stated that ALP would implement a pornography & violence filter at the ISP level, with the option for users to opt-out if they contact their ISP directly. There is a lot of things very wrong with this, and it's gotten much worse since the initial proposal. I'm going to quote some people smarter than I to paint a clearer picture. Like a lot of people around here I was pretty happy with the result of the last Australian election. Yet amidst all the apologising and signing up for Kyoto, Kevin Rudd's shiny new government did something that slipped under my radar. Probably a lot of things, really, but this is what bothers me now: the Aussie Clean Feed. They're intending to filter all content at an ISP level, to remove child pornography. And other pornography. And R-rated content. And violence. And 'inappropriate content'.." From 'Young and Sort of Free', NZ Public Address ...a separate list which blocks illegal material. From 'No opt-out of filtered Internet', Computerworld So we know (or at least gather) that the filter will cover: - pornography, or anything that would attract an R rating
- illegal and inappropriate content
Firstly, whether something is appropriate or not is entirely subjective. LiveJournal could easily fit under the banner of inappropriate, as would many, many other websites. But illegal is just as disturbing. Given that sedition is now illegal thanks to the Anti-Terrorism bill that Howard introduced in '05, websites that critisise the government in power could easily be censored under Clean Feed. It's unlikely that this would occur, but the fact that they would be within their legal right to do so is frightening enough. Downloading copyrighted material would likely be filtered out as well, so you can say goodbye to mininova, demonoid, etc. ( cut for length ) |
