Here are two pics I've done... the pirate pic with the mouse and the rapper looking guy with a recently bought graphics tablet (yay!)

Conclusion: never use mouse again. (plus it gave me horrendous  cramps lol)

I need to rename this next pic i think lol I just called it "dude" for now

Wow, that's awesome. I particularly like the Pirate's hair, lace/frills/whatever, and the flag. I've totally been thinking of getting a tablet - looks like a good buy.

I actually did the pirate flag with the tablet (forgot to mention that but you can kinda tell anyways ^^;)

Yeah its worth getting. Wacom is a trusted brand - you can get the Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet (which is a student version) for approx $185.00 for small and 200 & something for the medium size.
Harvey Norman sells them as well as most other computer/electrical stores.

Also there are amazing tutorials on the net on how to do hair like that. Well worth a look. I'm about to head off to work so I can't link you now but when I find the tuts I learned from I'll pass them on to you. =]

I think this is the longest post I've ever typed @_@

Ah, Wacom was who I was looking at. Does the tablet need to be the same size as the page or something? I have no idea how to use one.

Thank you for the tut links - I shall have to work through those.

I see the strain of writing such a long post has turned your eyes into little 'a's.

lol That's what I thought at first but the tablet board doesn't have to be the same size as the page on the screen. Bigger tablets just let you achieve more detail in smaller areas. I'd recoment the small size though if your just starting out - it's affordable and lets you work with a good level of detail. It's up to you though, you can buy a larger version if you want. In this case bigger is better :P

hehe I couldn't find swirls on the keyboard so I had to make do with a's ^_^

Hey Richard

Here are the links to the sites that I learnt from.

http://www.vexels.net/tutorials.php

With this next one here I used a quicker method. (this being in photoshop cs2) Instead of curving with the pen tool as the guy there does I use the free hand pen tool...saves a lot more time and works for smaller pictures.

and here is a beard one....just in case you might need it one day =p
